Looking for the perfect dessert to serve to your right-wing guests? Try this new Ben & Jerry's flavor! :-) (Sounds really good...)

The Oscar Ballot-O-Meter has just ticked over the 5 mark: Emily, Gary, Grandma, Karen, and Olivia are now in the trophy race. The rest of you have 17 days to join in.

I just realized that Lindsey is not represented on the contact page. If you read this, Lindsey, or if anyone else bumps into her, please ask her to send me her contact info and I'll add it to the page.

It's a fact: The Oscar this year will be won by Olivia or Emily or me! That's because those are the only players so far. That will change, of course, when you get your ballot in. Only 18 days to think about it....

Hey, if you're wondering who to root for in this Sunday's Superbowl, you could root for the underdog -- the Arizona Cardinals, which Vegas oddsmakers have losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers by at least 7 points. Or you could make it political, and root for the team that matches your politics: The Steelers owner (Dan Rooney) campaigned hard for Obama last year, while the Bidwell family (owners of the Cardinals) donated heavily to McCain. Or, pick 'em by colors: The Steelers are black and gold (same as Penn State in the NCAA), and the Cardinals are red and white (pretty close to Nebraska's scarlet and cream). Or choose between mascots: The Steelers mascot is Steely McBeam -- and the Cardinals mascot is a cardinal named Big Red. Enjoy the game, everybody!

Olivia, I love that you're researching the family history. Please let us know about all that you dig up. Have you heard yet that we're really Stoneburg's, not Anderson's?
Gary
1/25/09
Hey Livy -- yes, I did get your Oscar ballot. You are the first one in, which means that so far you are the winner! :-)

I was not aware of the Ancestory site. Looks interesting, and I can't wait to see everything you find out. Maybe we can make it into a webpage and put it up here...? Let's talk!

And by the way everybody, I got my computer up and running again. I finally had to do a complete re-format of my drive (i.e., erasing everything) and start over with a clean install of Windows. So it will take me a while to get the million-and-one settings and preferences back the way I like 'em, but at least I've got the basics back.

Hey Gary did you ever get the oscars answers from me? I did them yesterday when I was at Grandma's. I was over there because I'm making a family tree and I was talking to her about it, like to find some people on the Anderson/Lipskey side. We got pretty far actually! The latest person we got on there was in 1862 I believe. So far I have 60 people on the tree! Have you ever heard of that ancestory? Well I made an account on there and the more people you can fill out, the more hints you can get! They search millions of records, census, pictures, everything they can dig up. Then they tell you when they think they found a match and they all seemed to match up! I've got 7 hints so far and they all were correct as far as we know! Then I'm going to find more out on my mom's side and add some of that to the tree to when I can. I think it's pretty interesting, and all of the stories she told me were amazing! When dad came to pick me up he said that he had never heard these stories before that she mentioned! But that's all I really have to say, so I'll talk to you all later!

Again letting y'all know that my home computer is still non-functional, so unless I can get it back on its feet this weekend (I still have a few more tricks to try) there will be no updates to our website until Monday morning. The site still "works" -- you can send stuff in -- but your items won't appear until Monday. Wish me luck...
Gary

Along the lines of the inaugural satellite photo I mentioned below, here is another really amazing shot from that day.

It's a whopping 1,474-megapixel panoramic shot, so it's incredibly zoomable. Use the controls to focus on details in the crowd. (Is Chief Justice Clarence Thomas asleep...?) See it here.

Ladies and Gentlemen, warm up those clicking fingers. This year's Oscar ballot is ready!

We have about three weeks to get our Oscar picks in. The broadcast is Sunday night, February 22 -- I know that some of the readers of this page will be boarding a plane for D.C. the next morning, but even so they (and everyone else) are welcome to the viewing party that night at Grandma's.

I'll be making frequent and annoying reminders here to get your ballots in. Also, I'm going to email everyone today, for those who don't read this page often.

Lots of good movies this year, so it should be fun. And don't miss our convenient Oscar Trailers page, where you can see previews of all the nominated films. Good luck everybody!

Gary
1/22/09
Wow, Oscar season really snuck up on me this year. The nominations came out this morning, and I am hard at work on the Oscar ballot. Hoping to get it up here tomorrow. And then we'll only have about three weeks to make our choices. Stay tuned! (In the meantime, go to the official Oscar site to see the list of nominees.)

Good cartoon here about the oath-of-office flub.

It's the picture of the capital, head on, with the flags hanging inbetween all the columns. Great shot. And I've started our taxes, not gonna be as big of a return as usual, dang...
Gary
1/22/09
FYI, I'm having some computer trouble at home, so for the time being I won't be able to update this page from home. Meaning: newsletter items, new front pages, etc, will only appear during "office hours" when I'm on my work computer. Dang! There goes my tax refund. Why is it that every time I get my refund, I suddenly have computer and/or car trouble???

The Sasha & Malia story was great, the girls literally dropped their jaws when I told them. And we LOVED the picture! Keep the little details coming! The picture Gary that I was talking about is the top one on the whitehouse.gov site right now. I would LOVE to have that framed somewhere...

The whitehouse.gov pics rotate, so I'm not sure which one you're talking about. Let me know and I'll try to find a frame-worthy version of it. --Gary

What a great time for our country! Metcalfs, you are so fortunate to be going to DC. Wow! I heard that there was NOT ONE arrest while the capital had over a million people there...again Wow! 3 new recipes up that we found to be quite tasty. Make a good meal. :)
Gary

And yet more inauguration stuff: This time a satellite photo of the Mall during the oath of office. Click on the picture to see it full size -- and it's big!
Gary

You probably heard that some guy threw his shoe over the White House fence yesterday as an insult to Bush -- and was promptly arrested. Turns out many others had the same idea, though they wisely stopped short of the fence....
Gary
1/21/09
Wow, cool party for the "First Tweens" last night, as their parents made the rounds of the inaugural balls. I heard it reported only that Malia and Sasha were watching "High School Musical 3" on their first night in the White House. Which would have been cool enough, as I'm sure they didn't just pop in a DVD and watch it on TV but instead viewed it in the White House movie theater (where Nixon in his day watched the movie "Patton" over and over). But it turns out the party had some surprises.

I also heard that when the girls appeared on the reviewing stand yesterday and the news-talkers announced that their outfits had come from J.Crew, so many people went to the J.Crew site that it crashed and was down for the rest of the day! :-) Back up now.

Gary

New recipe today. Thanks, John! (Or Marsha...?)

What a cute picture. If will be fun to have young kids in the White House. I did get to watch Obama be sworn in. The principal noticed no one was planning to watch it. So she talked to all the teachers and said "this is history, turn on the tv." (I work with a lot of republicans)
Gary
1/20/09
I'm sure you all heard the story about the Obamas visiting the Lincoln Memorial a few days ago, when Obama pointed out Lincoln's inaugural address chiseled into the marble wall. His daughter asked if he was going to have to give a speech after the inauguration, and Obama said yes he would. She looked at him and said, "Better be good!" :-) Well, the reviews are in! :-)
Donna
1/20/09
They've changed the White House website...

Rachel Maddow (or maybe Keith -- I'm watching MSNBC) noticed that earlier. It switched at exactly noon (Eastern) as Obama was taking the oath. --Gary

Emily

Gary, I've been meaning to tell you the ipod movie CD you sent got here a few days ago. I am going to set it up this afternoon, thanks again!:)

I'm glad it arrived. Keep me posted on if it works for you and if you like it. And let me know if you have any problems with it -- I have used it for a while and can probably figure out what's wrong. (Plus, just last night I discovered yet another movie-converter that looks even easier to use than the one I sent, so I could send you that one too!) --Gary

Aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh, Bush is gone. Hallelujah!
What a lovely sight to see his chopper take him away!

I might be on Channel 6 news tonight. They're doing a story on employees watching the ceremony at work. I saw a camera guy walk in but I thought it was one of our photographers. I hope he got my good side...

Gary
1/20/09
The Potter thing is very apt. Somebody check his coat for the missing $8000. And yeah, why was he lifting boxes -- a guy with a history of heart problems? Makes you wonder what was in those boxes that he didn't want anyone else to handle them.... And if I may make one more small-minded and conspiratorial remark, Cheney sitting in a wheelchair means he didn't have to stand to acknowledge Obama as President.

Kind of a small personal thrill to see Dianne Feinstein at the heart of things. I once shared an elevator with her, back in San Francisco when she was a mere city councilperson, and we had a very brief conversation.

Okay, as of this minute (11:07 am) Bush is OUT; and Obama is IN!

Donna
1/20/09
Cheney has always reminded me of Mr. Potter in 'It's a Wonderful Life' and now that he hurt his back and will be attending the ceremony today in a wheelchair, it will make him look even more like that mean old Potter. I would have thought he'd have hired people to move his stuff for him.

And Gary, I heard on NPR this morning that Cafe Press (your Xmas card printer) is handing out free Obama pins. When asked why they would do this for free, they said because they wanted them to be accessible to everyone. Nice company.

Gary & Donna, bring your desire for Girl Scout cookies tonight to Grandma's, Teghan's selling & she'll be by with her order form!

Will do! --Gary

This is cool, a panoramic view from where Obama will be standing tomorrow.

The concert was amazing. Jack Black in a suit and never cracked a joke. Garth Brooks was really good, U2 was probably my favorite. The only non-American performers, I believe. Gallup is going to show the inaugration on the big screen so that makes it a bit more tolerable to be at work. I don't think I'd get much done if I worked from home. Obama will be sworn in with Lincoln's bible. The only president to do that since Lincoln. And Obama will be escorting Bush out. Ah, I hope we get to see that...

Thanks for that panoramic view -- very cool! (Click on "full screen" for the full effect.) I heard about the Lincoln bible, which is amazing. Gonna be a big day tomorrow! --Gary

Gary

FYI for those who missed it, I just noticed that the "We Are One" concert will be replayed on HBO today at noon and again at 8:30 tonight. I assume HBO will make it free-access like before, but I couldn't confirm that.
Amanda
1/19/09
Wow, the HBO thing was fantastic! I almost forgot to set it to record thinking, yea yea, I don't care about the glitz & glamour, just the actual turning over of presidency's, however, that was a very moving 2 hours. And how fantastic to watch it there in DC & know we'll be there in a month. And the FDR comparisons (and Eleanor/Marian Anderson story that I had just told Ryan about!) were great. While it was in all a serious event & leave it to Jamie Foxx to make comedy (when Steve Carell didn't & neither did Jack Black) his impression of Obama was hilarious! I wish I were home in front of the tv for the next 2 days...

Not only were the performances great (in 30-degree weather), but the whole show came off without a hitch. A live outdoor show like that with so many performers, and it came off smoothly and on time. Academy Awards, take a lesson! And yeah, Jamie Foxx hit just the right note of irreverence. An excellent show. --Gary

Happy, Happy Birthday, Mom!!!!!!
Amanda
1/18/09
The details... We're going to DC on Sunday the 22nd until Saturday the 28th. My mom goes every year for work and a few years ago I tagged along. I got the lay of the land & the desire to go back. Ryan's only been there once, and for about 8 hours in a rented van with a bunch of other Air Force guys & all they saw was stuff from the windows. Tristen is extremely interested in DC, so the trip should be good. After the inaguration I'm going to try to set up a White House Tour. Last time I got an "in" with Hagel's office. White House tours need to be booked 4-6 months in advance & I got it booked last time in 3 weeks. SO, I'm hoping that will be possible again, but I'm not holding my breath. Gonna have to go through Nelson's office I guess. Waiting til after Tuesday though as the while city is mass chaos preparing for that.

And since I love to fly so much (not) I am going on a work trip to Dallas a few days before, Sunday the 15th-Wednesday the 18th. Get home just in time to do my laundry & leave again...

About the "We Are One" concert: The info I had here a few days ago said it was being shown (taped) at 6 pm on HBO (412 in Lincoln). That channel should be 401. It was also shown live just now, and it was great! So set your tivos for HBO (401 in Lincoln) from 6 to 8 pm.

I would like to be able to watch some of the inauguration, but I will have to be at work that day. I know of one family from St Pauls that will get to go it. I was getting homework ready for him because he was going to be gone next week. I asked him where he was going. He said "to Washington DC, for some Obama thing." What a waste..... I do get tomorrow off (Erika too), it the end of 1st semester!! Plan to enjoy it with a day of shopping, and lunch with Brent. Been nasty cold here too, it was -20 this morning and it didn't get much warmer.
Donna
1/15/09
Uh, you forgot to mention that on Monday there will be a kids concert with Hannah Montanna--a favorite of the Obama girls...

I wish we could all get the day off Tuesday. I just want to stay home and watch TV the entire day. I work with someone whose brother-in-law will be attending one of the inaugural balls.

It should be a national holiday. That, and election day. I mean, once every four years...c'mon! :-) --Gary

Gary
1/15/09
Cold enough for you? The thermometer was reading -14 when I started my car this morning. Yikes! Even colder tonight -- then up in the 40s by tomorrow afternoon...? That's what they're saying, anyway.

Hey, who's planning to watch the inauguration? Answer: Just about everybody. The inauguration on Tuesday will probably be the most-watched event in history. Starting on Saturday and lasting through the late hours of Tuesday, you can tune your TV to almost any channel during that time and see something inauguration-related. Even QVC will be hawking Obama merchandise on Tuesday. :-)

On Saturday the 17th, C-SPAN is first out of the gate. They will cover Obama's train ride from Philadelphia to Washington, which leaves late-morning (though no cameras will be on the train itself). The train will make a couple of stops: First in Wilmington, DE, to pick up Joe Biden and family, and second in Baltimore where Obama will give a speech.

C-SPAN will be live for all four days, broadcasting all the major events (the swearing in, the inaugural address, the parade, and the inaugural balls) with no narration.

On Sunday the 18th, the "We Are One" concert will be happening on the Mall in front of the Lincoln Memorial. Obama and Biden will both be there, and performers include Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Bono, Garth Brooks, Sheryl Crow, Renee Fleming, Josh Groban, Herbie Hancock, Heather Headley, John Legend, Jennifer Nettles, John Mellencamp, Usher, Shakira, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, will.i.am and Stevie Wonder. It starts at 1:30 our time, but will be televised on HBO at 6 pm. For free: Even if you don't subscribe to HBO, just tune in (cable channel 412 in the Lincoln area).

On Tuesday the 20th, all the networks will be live all day from Washington, and all will be in full-on inauguration mode by 9 am. (Most will begin earlier than that -- like CNN, which starts its coverage that day at 4 am.) The swearing-in happens at 11 am our time, followed by the inauguration address (which is sure to be an historic speech), and then the parade -- from the Capitol Building down Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House -- beginning at 1:30 our time. (Check this map.)

That evening, there will be 10 separate inaugural balls, and the Obamas will be putting in an appearance at most (maybe all) of them. These too will be covered by the networks.

If you're stuck in front of your computer, no problem. You can watch live feeds all day on CBS, ABC, MSNBC, CNN, and C-SPAN.

Thanks for taking care of the 09 Christmas list Emily and Erika. Anna is back from Florida and back to frigid Mpls. and started her new classes yesterday. Paul, Lori, Linz, Livi and Matt flew out of Mpls. to St Maarten's last weekend, it was fun to see them. We are having freezing weather this week but up to 30 by Sunday. woo hoo :(
Gary
1/12/09
Re: health. Feeling ok overall, though I've been coughing for a long time. Went to the doc just today, and was given a week's worth of decongestants and steroids. He thought it might be some new allergy, or perhaps a low-grade sinus infection. I go back in a week, and if I'm still coughing, the doc says we'll "look deeper."

Strange weather here today. Freezing rain in the early morning hours, so the local morning shows were having a field day with accident reports and scary warnings. (Donna, did you go to Omaha today?) Then by noon it felt kinda like spring -- the temperature had climbed above freezing with a warm and almost rainy wind. And then by 5 the temp had crashed down into the teens with blowing snow. Something for everyone today!

Karen
1/12/09
Gary, how are you feeling? I don't have much of an excuse for not writing, just back at school and keeping busy. We are getting yet another winter storm today. Had maybe two inches overnight, then about 1 it started up again. Getting some snow and strong winds. Everything is canceling for tonight. Even closing the mall -- so it must be bad. Marsha -- is Anna back yet? We will need a report when she does get back. Donna -- have you tried out the grill yet? Just wondering if it is working for you.
Emily
1/11/09
Alright. Erika and I made up the list a few days ago. Hope everyone is happy with it! :)

Looks good to me. Check it out, everybody! Thanks, Emily and Erika. --Gary

Gary
1/10/09
Wow, five days and not a peep here. I've been sick, so what's your excuse? :-) (No biggie, just the cough/congestion that everybody else seems to have too.)

Emily, as you were the first one to step up, I would say go ahead with the list. I'll put it up here and announce it as soon as you get it finished.

Hey, I just heard that Paul, Lori, Lindsey and Livy are in St. Maartens for the next week. Who knew?? Too bad for them -- not only are they missing all this snow and ice, but they're having to endure temperatures reaching the upper 70s on the beach. Be strong, you guys! You'll make it! :-)

Marsha
1/5/09
You have my vote to get crackin' on the 09 Christmas list Emily. Gosh Karen, way to stretch out Christmas 08. We have plenty of snow and slippery ice around, I'm sure it will be here through spring. Anna is enjoying her time in sunny Florida but the park has been full. Zach has a week off work and is over tonight cooking :) lucky for John and me....
Karen
1/5/09
I also had to return to work today. I was actually ready to go back. On the plus side we got to extend Christmas for another day. Our Christmas parties were to be on the last Friday -- but we had a snow day -- so they decided to have it today. So all afternoon was fun games and I got loaded down with gifts. A good day to return.
Emily
1/5/09
Mom and I were also wondering about the 09 Christmas list. I know its early, and don't want to step on any toes (Amanda/Tristen) if last year's list makers were planning on taking it over again this year, or anyone else. But, I always enjoy doing it if no one else wants to. I just know some people like to get started on it early, and I appreciate having an idea of who I have early too. Just a thought....

I was wondering about the list too, but forgot to mention it here. Whoever does it, I'll post it as soon as it's ready! --Gary

Emily
1/5/09
I had to go back to school today too, and I'm not too happy about it. But, thanks to the snow day most of my midterms that were scheduled for this week got pushed back to next week. I'm pretty happy about that since I didn't get much done over break.
Thanks for the ipod email Gary. I've been looking through the book and will be setting it up tonight or tomorrow, whenever I get some free time. I am excited to try it out, I'll let you know how it goes :)

I converted a couple of my DVDs last night using that system. It works fine, though as I mentioned it takes a lot of computer-time. In the second stage of the process (when you use the Videora Converter program) you can queue up several videos to be done in succession -- so I usually let the computer do that overnight when I go to bed. Good luck with it! --Gary

Gary

He's good enough, he's smart enough, and doggone it, he's now a U.S. Senator! The recount is over, and Al Franken came out on top. Way to go, Minnesota!

I love my job, but of all the days in the year, this is the hardest day to go back to work. Just off a long vacation, and about as far from Christmas as it is possible to be. Campus is still pretty empty -- no students yet. On the plus side, there's no snow and ice, so the drive was easy....

Emily
1/2/09
That is awesome that you got an ipod touch Gary! They are a lot of fun. Erika recently got a new ipod with video too, and we have both been wondering how to get movies onto it. I didn't think you could, so we would both love to know how to do it, thanks!

I've got a very easy-to-use program that does the trick. Takes about two clicks to convert any DVD or video file into a format that works on the iPod. (It does take some time, though -- converting a typical DVD takes the computer about an hour.) I'll burn the program to a CD and send it to you. Along with complete instructions. Thanks again for introducing me to the iPod Touch! :-) --Gary

Gary, congratulations on the cell phone! I bet you will end up using it more than you expect.
I had no idea there was a new double-secret contact page! Mom just forwarded the email to me. I still have my NelEmily1[AT]msn.com email, but I check my school email, Emily.Nelson[AT]briarcliff.edu, more often if you want to add one of those to the page.

Your Briarcliff email address is now on the page, thanks. And thanks for one more thing: I followed your example and got myself an iPod Touch. Which I totally love. I've been having fun converting DVDs into movie files and loading them on the iPod. It's really cool to have the complete Lord of the Rings movies, for example (plus many more), on this little credit-card-sized device in my pocket. Hey, let me know if you want any particular movies for yourself. I'd be glad to do it for you, or show you how to do it yourself. --Gary

Karen
1/2/09
Gary -- congratulations!! You will be amazed at how much you end up using it. Brent gave me and the girls something for Christmas that I thought you might like. It's a key finder -- you whistle and it beeps to tell you where your keys are. Something you could have used last week.
Marsha -- enjoyed reading about your squirrel problem, they can be pesky. We still have that deer in the yard. Just about gave me heart failure yesterday when I went to dump some garbage in the can. We didn't see each other until we were about two feet apart. The garbage bag is still in the driveway.
