What a nice bunch of new photos! Looks like the girls had another good day at the office. Erika, I thought you had kicked the flu a few days ago, however I understand that is one of the things about it, it makes return calls and often goes into respiratory problems, so watch that!! Congratulations on your job. I'm glad they aren't quite ready for you yet. Sam, thanks for the treat, I thought it was really nice to have a long distance 'trick or treat.' Wasn't expecting that when I went to the door. Karen and Emily, I hope you aren't thinking about getting the flu. Was thinking how nice it would be if you could come have Thanksgiving dinner with us?? Think about it!! Been cleaning in the basement, what a joyful job! So now I must get busy again.

Happy Halloween to everyone!!

Happy Birthday John!!

Wow, lots on the front page today, busy week-end. I love your costume Teghan. Tristen where was your costume? :) Looks like another fun day at the office with Gary. I think Charlie may have had the best day. Erika is on the couch for the day. Just can not seem to shake this illness. I've had a cold all week, and now Erika is saying she is stuffed up, achy and dizzy. Looking forward to tomorrow night, have lots of candy stocked up. Hopefully Erika will be feeling better and can hand out the candy. Brent should be back home this afternoon. Talked to him last night, he was tired from sitting in meetings all day, but was enjoying the plush hotel room and room service. John, what are your plans for tomorrow? Hope you have a great birthday. Anna, have you decided what you would like from us for Christmas? Let me know......

And back from lunch. The cafeteria staff were all in costumes today, and they were serving Halloween-y food like "Cauldrons" (bread bowls) and "Witch's Brew" (a stew for the "cauldrons") and similar spooky foods. Plus a big jack-o-lantern bowl of treat-or-treat candy. But even so, Teghan had only a bowl of plain pasta, and Tristen had a hot dog. And ice cream for each to follow.

Tristen: I'm making a pumpkin person.

Teghan: I am making a girl pumpkin.

Hey, everybody. Tristen and Teghan are spending the day in my office, on this rainy Thursday. We're just getting settled in at the moment. Teghan brought her cool squirrel ("Charlie"). And in a few hours we'll head over to the cafeteria for lunch!

Tristen: I'm making a rainbow out of colored paper clips.

Teghan: I'm playing with acrobots!

Erika had a good day today. There is a new restaurant opening in the little mall by our house. It's called the Pita Pit. She filled out an application and was immediately called in for an interview. She had the interview this afternoon and was hired. The restaurant is still being remodeled and won't open for a couple of weeks, and she will have to go in for training.......

Congrats, Erika! Getting in on the ground floor is a fast route to management. --Gary

Finally a nice fall day, and no rain! I had a nice four day week-end, but back to school today. Most of the kids were back, and feeling much better. Erika had a fun night on Friday. A friend invited her to go the SC Hockey game (yeah it sounded lousy to me at first too). When she got home, she told me that they got to sit in the sky boxes and had a very nice time. Emily had an easy week last week. One of her professors had the flu and was gone all week. So she didn't go to class most of the week. She is invited to a halloween party on Saturday and just told me she has her costume -- a bee. Gary, my school pictures should be in soon, when do you need the pictures? Brent is off to Des Moines for a planning conference, he will be gone from Wed to Friday.

No deadline for the pictures -- just the sooner I get them, the sooner I can get working on them. Thanks for yours! (And, I assume, Emily's and Erika's and Brent's...?) --Gary

Ha! George Bush has still got it. And by "it" I mean the ability to say something stupid.

He was in Montreal yesterday to give a speech at a $400-a-plate lunch. To their credit, about 300 Canadians protested his appearance by throwing shoes and burning effigies, but this was outside. Inside, he started off with an anecdote that I don't think he really "got." He said a little while after leaving the White House and moving back to Texas he went into a hardware store, and one of the employees asked him if anyone ever told him he looked a lot like George Bush. He replied, "Happens almost every day" (har har). And then, Bush said, the employee said, "Sure must make you mad!" Like I said, I don't think Bush got it.

But the foot-in-mouth moment came later, when he was talking about any regrets he had while he was in office. He said he regretted standing in front of that "Mission Impossible" sign on the aircraft carrier in 2003. Ooops. The sign, of course, said "Mission Accomplished." :-) Gee, I ... I kinda miss him....

Hey, do you remember these?

A few years ago, I made a set of these magnetic buttons for Grandma, featuring all the grandkids. They're 2.25" inches across (a little bigger than pictured), and are great refrigerator magnets. And as Teghan has discovered, there are all sorts of games you can play with them.

Now I'd like to make a new set: Some of these are getting a little dated, and this time around I would like to include everybody, from Grandma on down. I would also make these available to you all on a private website where you could choose which you might want -- e.g., your own family (or just yourself!) -- and purchase however many you want (if any!). They would cost around $3 each.

Here's where I need your help: I need a current photo of each of you. School pictures are fine. For you non-students, any reasonably current photo of yourself that doesn't make you go "eewwwww!" We all have digital cameras or cell-phone cameras around now, so it shouldn't be too difficult to come up with a photo you like. Of course, the more crisp and clear and bright, the better. If you happen to want buttons of extended family members, girlfriends, boyfriends, pets, automobiles, or houseplants, send me those too and I'll make 'em up for you. But I definitely want photos of the 21 of us who appear on the double-secret Contact Page.

Your help is appreciated! And I'll be glad to address any questions or concerns you may have. I thank you.

For those of you who are beginning to forget what a sunny fall day looks like, this might help before the rain drives you crazy.

One of the things I like best about fall is the dry leaves blowing around on the ground. This year, it's all just a wet slippery mush. Dang!

Last night Teghan was telling some of us about a paper object she had made in school that demonstrated, when twisted and folded in different ways, the life cycle of a butterfly. We asked her to tell us more about it, and today she sent in some pictures (with captions). So without further ado, I present to you Teghan Metcalf's "Life Cycle of a Butterfly."

Hey everybody! I thought I could put some pictures on here of the boys. Shadow just graduated puppy class last night! We got a certificate, a goody-bag, and pictures of Shadow with a graduation cap on! I took like six pictures and picked the best ones to put on here! I also put a picture of when we first got Shadow and what he looks like now! There are some major changes, not only in size but his face--he looks like an old man now! He's a little over 7 months and weighs about 45 pounds.

We're thinking about taking an intermediate class, but not quite sure yet. The last pictures are of my bathroom--we're not completely finished, but close. Just the countertop and floor we need to re-tile. They're actually just stickers on the wall, not paint. We ordered from an online site. And we also added shower doors instead of putting a curtain in, and I think that's about it. So I'll talk to you all later!

Gary
10/20/09
Thanks, I'm still really having fun with the new camera. It has been a long time since I had a decent camera, and it's fun to get back into it.

The flu sounds awful. Kids going out for recess and then sitting in a corner -- that's a pretty powerful image. I've been lucky so far (knock wood). I got a flu shot about three weeks ago, and then I've been pretty much out of the mainstream: I haven't been in any crowded public areas for a while, not even to do shopping. Thank you, Amazon.com! :-)

So those of you who are sick, get healthy soon! And those are who are healthy, stay that way!

Karen

Gary -- nice pictures! The flu is still hanging on here. Yesterday St Pauls had 25% of the kids out sick, and two of the teachers were sick. Today is was 30% gone. There was talk about closing school for tomorrow, but they decided to stay open. The good news is we do have Thursday and Friday off for a teachers conference. Poor kids are dragging. I took them out for recesses, but they all prefer to sit in a corner, and EVERYONE has a nasty cough. I came home with achy muscles last night and did run a fever for most of the night, but felt much better this morning. So hoping to get through tomorrow and then enjoy a nice long week-end and hope everyone is back to normal next week.

Whew. How many of us are going to have bad dreams tonight after todays's game? Watching that was the hardest work I've done in a long time. We have a top-10 defense (who had an off day today), and a bottom-10 offense (who had a really bad day today). Officiating was lousy, yes, but that's not why we lost.

Oh, and if you thought the fans were booing the Huskers as they left the field at halftime -- which is how it looked on TV -- I heard that in fact the fans were booing the refs. The team had almost all left the field when the booing started, and it was directed at the refs who were gathering on the sideline.

Next week, I'm betting Cody Green starts. The only touchdown we scored in this game was thanks to Green, after Zac Lee was benched in the last few minutes. In seven out of the past eight quarters of football, our offense under Lee has scored no points. And that was against two teams ranked lower than us. I say put Green in, and hope for better!

Tristen & Teghan are doing better. They both still have a lingering cough, but that’s common.... Teghan went back to school Thursday, so with her being off school Monday she only missed 2 days. Her teacher was sick too & recognized that a lot of other kids were out this week so she had much less homework & cancelled the spelling test for the week. On Friday Teghan had a field trip to Chet Ager Nature Center & I helped drive/corral kids. That was nice for both of us, a little chilly but we survived. Then when she got back to school she had pajama day & money machine day as an incentive for their fundraising they did last month. Friday was a GREAT day for Teghan, so glad she was well enough to go. Tristen went back on Wednesday, missed the whole week of dance, but went back last night. She was tired after 3 classes! She had all her homework made up the first night too. They both were dying to get back to school. Tristen could have stayed home on Wednesday too just for the extra rest, but didn’t want to. Teghan told me on Wednesday, “Mom, if I miss Friday & the field trip & pj day, I’m going to be pretty upset.”

So far Ryan & I are good, I think we missed it. What a long crazy week. But, hopefully, it’s come & gone & we’ll be good to go for the winter!

Grandma, unless something major occurs, we’ll see you Tuesday & I THINK this week Ryan will be with us, as it’s “fall break” for students at UNL.

Gary, Teghan’s counting down the days til their fall break, they’re looking forward to “work.”

Go big red! Excited for the game!!

Should be a good game. The Lincoln school fall break is week after next (26-30), right? I'm looking forward to it, too -- we'll have a great time! --Gary

Erika is about 95% recovered, just a nasty cough. I'm not sure what I had, but I was over it by Thursday morning. Now poor Brent has something. He didn't go to work Wed or Thurs. He really needed to stay home today too, but went in. He is heading to the doctor about now, so we'll see what happens. The flu is hitting SC hard. Lots of kids at Erika's school are gone -- about 15%. A good friend of Erika's has the flu with pneunomia and strep!
Gary
10/16/09
Hey, how's everybody feeling? Teghan? Erika? Tristen? Karen? (Me? I'm fine, thanks!)
Karen
10/14/09
Erika was feeling much better yesterday. She went back to school today, but when I picked her up I could tell she was wasted. She is also loaded down with homework and hates to miss school. She did cancel on dance class tonight, and may be home again tomorrow. Brent took the day off -- feeling OK, just needed a "mental health" day. Once Emily heard Erika had the flu, she stayed at the dorm (although I don't think that's any better). I was dragging all day and really hope I'm not getting it. I already took a hot bath and am in my pjs with my snuggie and on the couch and it feels good (oh, and Brent has a fire going).
Amanda
10/14/09
How is Erika? And did anyone else get it? The dr told me today that if they girls showed signs of it on Friday they were contagious Thursday & maybe even Wednesday! Here I thought Saturday & Sunday were the worst days contagious wise since that's when the fever was there. They showed absolutely no signs of it on Thursday, amazing how this crap can grow & mutate in your body without even knowing about it.... I'm gonna live in a bubble.
Amanda

Home again with a sick kid... Tristen went to school, though she could have stayed home, she got tired just getting ready for school today! I took Teghan back to the doctor because of a cough. They both had to stop tamiflu because a rash appeared. I kept Teghan home because of congestion & cough, the doctor agreed so that made me feel better about the choice! (She's ready to go back to school, it's killing her!) He said what could be bad now would be the potential for a new infection, says strep is going around & it latches on to the congestion in her sinuses & that gives it easy access to pick up a new infection.... Sheesh!
Donna
10/14/09
So did T&t go back to school today?

Erika, are you feeling better?

Someone at work was just told she has the swine flu and possibly strep too. What a bad combination.

Mom, that soup was even better warmed up for lunch today. While I was microwaving it, someone asked if they could just look at it because it smelled so good. Would you put the recipe up? I may try making it myself.

Remember a few weeks ago we were talking about Wolf Blitzer (i.e., the most overrated journalist in America) who works for CNN (i.e., Fox News Lite)? Well, last night on The Daily Show, Jon Stewart held CNN's feet to the fire. Comedy Central doesn't allow their stuff to appear on YouTube, but you can see the entire 11-minute clip here (scroll down to find the video). It's worth your time.

He criticizes CNN for not fact-checking what they report -- and states that fact-checking is the main job of journalism. Once again, it's a sign of our times that it takes a comedy show to teach the journalists how to do their job.

Yes, after a phone call from Dr. Gary (MD courtesy of the University of Bahamas???) I did decide to have them stay home another day. They're feeling good, but now the cough makes me nervous. Then when I come up on the computer this is the main headline story on MSN...

So if I'm already worried about the cough, this might have been a sign.

So, Grandma, cancel us for Tuesday night dinner. We don't want hacking & coughing near you or anyone else! We'll stay close to home for another day.... Oh, and we made pumpkin bars. They were good, a bit dense, we remembered yours being fluffier. I realized later, I used baking SODA, not powder. GRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!! I'll remake them because I had to buy the big can of pumpkin as that's all they had (& I was so lucky to get that that I bought 3! Figured I'd make them again, or use it for pie) and the dense ones aren't bad, just dense... Tristen joked that she called you so many times about the recipe today you might as well have made them! Anyway, thanks for the recipe!

Karen
10/12/09
I was pretty nervous about the thing too. Didn't think much about Erika not feeling well until I read your note about Teghan and Tristen. This morning I called for an appointment and the nurse was like -- yeah bring her if you think you need to, but it probably doesn't matter. I think there is way TOO MUCH hype about this whole illness. It totally confuses me. Not sure I can do much about the rest of us getting it. The shots aren't available here yet. Will try to keep Brent away from Erika as much as possible, but can't do more than that......
So Gary, where can you practice medicine? :) Made me laugh

Mississippi, North Carolina, the Philippines, and Guam. I could have added several more southern states, but the internet site where I got the degree from would have charged an extra $15. --Gary

Amanda
10/12/09
The T's r better today, but not 100%, fevers were gone this morning, so I think I'll send them to school. They did get a little more active this afternoon (& actually got dressed & brushed their hair) and after some running around they started coughing. That's my next big fear, they say this can develop into respiratory issues later. So, we'll keep an eye on that next. It's been crazy though, and now Ryan & I are nervous every time we sniffle or sneeze or anything as if it's gonna get us next. Erika, we ALL feel for you, this is junk stuff.... And now Brent really ought to watch it. I wondered once we'd been exposed to it hard core like this & pending we DON'T get it, would we need the shot? Wouldn't that be our vaccination? Maybe not, maybe that only works for the people who actually got it... Anyway, as I type this I wonder really if I shouldn't just keep them home one more day as a precaution. Today I had to cuz of the fevers & 24 hours, but maybe tomorrow would be just one more day of a buffer zone for other kids & for the T's to get even stronger. I don't know.... I had a friend email me on facebook & said she's a nurse & they've told them if they get it it's mandatory 7 days off work.

Well, I'm not a doctor (not in Nebraska, anyway), but I would sure let them stay home another day. Both for their sake and the other kids'. On the campus, they were urging people to stay home til they felt like they were over it, and then stay home one more day. BTW, I'm off tomorrow if there's anything I can do to help out. --Gary

Karen
10/12/09
How are Tristen and Teghan doing today? Erika has joined them with the N1H1 flu. Wasn't feeling great yesterday, but not bad. This morning she looked awful and was running a fever. So I kept her home and made an appointment to see the doctor. Took her in this afternoon, the dr asked about 5 questions and said "it sounds like you have the flu." He didn't run the test but said she had it, and was treating it as if she did. So she has started taking Tamiflu and will be home for at least one more day.

Schools = germ factories. Everybody stop going until I give the all-clear!

But seriously: Feel better soon, Erika! --Gary

Yea, luckily teghan doesn't have school tomorrow & I'm off work for the state holiday. Tristen is supposed to have school, but I'm sure she'll miss. I wasn't sure about the shot either, and it's moot now, but I do worry about others. Steve is just healing after his recent hospital stay & he saw the girls just thursday night...
Karen
10/11/09
Wow, Amanda aren't you glad you took them to the doctor. That sounds miserable, hope they get better soon. I'm guessing they will miss 1-2 days of school.

I am still trying to decide if I should get the H1N1 shot, I do think Brent should get it. Guess we will have to wait to see if enough are available.

Amanda
10/11/09
It is H1N1. We went to LincCare last night about 8:30 & the culture was supposed to produce results in 15 minutes, it only took 5. Got them on Tamaflu, though pediatric Tamaflu is out in Lincoln (& most other places) so they had to “compound” it--ie: make it from scratch. Anyhow, it seems to have worked for Tristen, and is on it's way for working for Teghan. Girls still have fevers today, Teghan still at 103, Tristen down from the 103 range & sitting at 101 today. I've never seen them have such high fevers & be so miserable. And their symptoms & timing is exactly symmetrical. So, people, don't ignore a flu type bug. Get to dr asap & have them run the test. Tamaflu is only effective within the first 12-48 hrs and thank goodness we got them on it quick. They're not out of the woods yet, no marathons today, but we'll get there. Dr. said it could run 3 to 4 days, sometimes it's lasting over a week.
Karen
10/10/09

We have snow on the ground too, but no pukers. Tristen and Teghan -- I hope you are both better soon. Do you think it's the swine flu? One of Erika's good friends was diagnosed with it this week. Hope they didn't spend too much time together.
Amanda
10/10/09
We've got snow on the ground, and two pukers... Tristen & Teghan both have fevers and are back & forth into the bathroom... Tristen told me she actually fell asleep in the bathroom in the middle of the night. She'll miss a birthday party today & we'll all miss a wedding. We were supposed to also go to the pumpkin patch (we hadn't figured out how we were going to juggle it all) but the weather called that off. I told Tristen they didn't know how to get sick, I said they're supposed to get sick during the week so they can skip school! I do think Teghan started this yesterday during school because Ryan said she came out miserable & she had a headache & got into bed as soon as she got home & stayed there all night...

Feel better soon, you two! --Gary

I knew it was common practice to leave town the night of the game, you can tell when you leave our stadium after a game because the opponents busses are running & they're loading them up. And would you stay in a town where they can't provide you flippin electricity during your half time???? And Helu is my favorite... He's the one we always watch. Well and Suh, but who doesn't have him as their favorite?
Gary
10/9/09
Dang, I came here to write a note and wiped out all of today's earlier entries by making a stupid backup error. I can restore them next time I get to my office, but in the meantime...sorry, everybody.

I came with a cool football-related story: I went to my usual place for a haircut after work tonight, and the talk soon got around to last night's game. The girl cutting my hair said if I had come in just a bit earlier I would have run into four Huskers who played in the Missouri game, including quarterback Zac Lee and running back Roy Helu, who had all come in for haircuts. (She didn't know the other two.) I didn't expect her to know this, but I asked something I wondered about last night: Did the team stay overnight in Missouri and come back this morning? She told me she asked Helu the same thing. He said, no, immediately after the game they got on the bus and drove back to Lincoln. And when the bus arrived, the coach had them all run some laps! And then, all four of them had classes today, and two of them had tests. Yeesh!

Photo-Spot Week #3 draws to a close today, and I hope you all had fun with it. For those of you who may have missed an item here and there, here are the answers!

President Obama Nobel Peace Prize winner! What a surprise. Have we ever had a president in office win? I know Carter won, but that was years after he was in office and I think it was for Habitat for Humanity, but I could be wrong.

Carter won 20-some years after he was out of office. Theodore Roosevelt won while in office in 1906, and Woodrow Wilson won while in office in 1919. Kind of repugnant to see most of the mainstream media this morning (everybody on CNN, Chuck Todd on MSNBC, etc.) wrinkling their tiny brows and wondering why Obama was given this honor. Of course, they were just (as usual) going along with the Repugnant Party -- oops, make that Republican Party -- in their never-ending crusade to diminish everything Obama does. I'm always reminded of what they used to say about Ginger Rogers: She did everything Fred Astaire did, only she had to do it backwards and in high heels. No matter what Obama accomplishes -- and already he has phased down our presence in Iraq, closed down Guantanamo, averted what would likely have been a wordwide economic crash, and is close to signing into law a historic health-care bill, among other things -- the Republicans will insultingly dismiss it. By this time in his own presidency, Bush had ignored the CIA warnings of a terrorist plot to fly commercial jets into American buildings, and then later sat on a kindergarten chair with a storybook in his hands while two American buildings burned and collapsed. Oh, also he had cut a lot of brush. As the great Alan Grayson (Democratic Representative from Florida) said in the House today, "If the President has a BLT today, the Republicans will try to ban bacon tomorrow." --Gary

Finally found all seven this morning! Brent was happy he stayed up for the game last night. I didn't watch any of it, Brent was thinking he would stop at half time, but decided to try the next quarter, and ended up watching it all. Erika has today off, sleeping in. Today is picture day for me :) Tomorrow Erika has to be at her debate tournament at 7, she decided not to compete this time, but will be working there all day. Looks like snow for us tomorrow, maybe even an inch. Brent did bring in several of the plants Wednesday, got a hard frost last night.

10/8/09
What a game! After three painful quarters with a lifeless offense (only the defense kept them in the game at all), after everybody (including me) gave up on them, in a pouring rain with Missouri running rings around them, the Huskers came back in the fourth quarter with two interceptions and four touchdowns. Wow. The rain was coming down in buckets, the clock on the field didn't work, and neither did the lights in the Husker locker room -- they had to use flashlights during halftime. We went into the fourth quarter behind 12-0; and after 27 unanswered points we won the game. Totally worth staying up late for! Missouri beat us three years in a row, but that ended tonight. This huge Missouri crowd, which had been loud and nasty all evening, sat there stunned and soaking wet at game end. Woo-hoo! Pelini was cool: After the game one of the reporters asked him if the defense will be getting their Blackshirts now. Pelini paused and said, "I don't know; we'll see." The reporter said, "Hmmm, tough grader!" :-)

Hey everybody!!! Dad thought I should send in a couple pictures. These pictures are of Shadow, Max and Charlie. The first two are Charlie and I on the couch at Lindsey's. It was her birthday and they let her come up on the couch and lay with me. The last ones are just the boys in the living room.

Shadow is now 7 months old and weighs 40 lbs. We're still taking puppy classes every Monday night--which actually are about over. He's doing great--he knows how to sit, shake, and lay down, and kind of stay. He is getting better at drop it and leave it. We're still trying to teach him to catch a frisbee in the air and to fetch, but he is still jumping up on people so we have to break him of that. He just got back from the vet a few days ago, he got neutered and his dew claws removed. He is definitely twice the size of Max!

I found all 7 differences on today's picture!

I think that's about all I have to say, so I'll talk to you all later!

Livy, your pics arrived just as I was getting ready to leave for the day so I didn't have time to put them on the photo page. I will put them up first thing tomorrow, ok? Thanks for sending them in! --Gary

I can find 6 today but I believe you may have only put up 6 because I sure can't find a 7th. Anyway, really enjoyed the Nelsons this weekend, am so glad you made it down! Dreary again today, maybe this is the start of an early winter, as this week is supposed to be about the same. Been carrying in plants but have the heavy ones left now wait for another day. Marsha, how are you feeling? Hope the Novicaine has left your system!

Dang, I can only find five this morning, but still more than the leaves last week :)

Good to know it's a challenge. :-) They always look waaay too easy to me, but of course that's because I made 'em and know where everything is. --Gary

Hey, we just got home. Had an uneventful trip home. It was a fun day, glad we came, thanks for eveything.

Hey, Nelsons, thanks for making the drive down to Lincoln today. It was fun hanging out with you this afternoon. Erika, remember: Jesus loves you. And Emily: No substitutions -- we can't make it that way! :-)

Here's another amazing lost-dog story. Kind of a tear-jerker! I thought I'd post it here rather than wait for the next cool site.

The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind -- along with everything else. A grey and windy morning out there! I wore a jacket for the first time this year.

Hey, if you are a fan of the Photo-Spot game, be sure to tune in Monday. Got some good pictures lined up for our third week of that game.

Welcome to October, everybody.

Check out the fall webcams when you get a chance. I've deleted a few old ones and added several new ones -- including some high-definition wide-screen cams. Pretty cool, and should be beautiful as the season progresses.
