Ryan came in at 1:30 singing, "Mr. Plow, that's my name, that name again is Mr. Plow"... Now they are sledding the big hill and going over to the old house for the hill there. Tristen will sleep good tonight! Again, wish we had a digital camera, soon, thanks to tax time!

Snow day for me today. I brought work home with me last night just in case and it paid off. So I'm "working" at home today. Really nice. I just shoveled the driveway. Not too bad, but would rather have had Metcalf Snow Removal take care of it. How can anyone stay out that long with a snowblower and call it fun?
Tristen, thanks for the beautiful picture! Coca Cola, Coca Cola, la la la la la...

Amanda

I bet everyone wished Ryan lived in their neck of the woods today. He went out to snowblow at 10:30, and as of 1:00 he still isn't in. He has done 10 driveways counting ours and all the sidewalks that go with them. He is loving it, this is his kind of fun! Tristen played outside for about an hour and a half, and is back in now for a warm up break. I don't know how much we have, quite a few inches and it is still falling, Ryan will have to go over our driveway again when he gets closer to home! Teghan and I are staying in and I just got done e-filing our taxes. Stay warm everyone, and enjoy!

Karen

We got about 2 inches of snow so far, still more falling. Weatherman said we may get up to 5 inches. Slick roads and driving is tricky. School for everyone here - except for me - my day off - and Erika is home sick.

Got a call this morning from the Florida kinfolk, and they seem to be having a great time (missing the snow, tho). Have been at Disney World the past 3 days at different parks and shows. The big swimming race hasn't taken place yet. Linz loved the roller coaster but Livy not so much. It is very warm there and they got wet in a rain shower while waiting to see a show and they were already hot and sweaty so they left early. Today they are going to the ocean at Melbourne, Fla. (I think) about an hour's drive. The plane ride was O.K. Linz was the only one to get patted down. I'm sure she looked dangerous!! Haven't had any seafood yet. They will be back on Sunday all tanned and tired. Might be some snow left. That is the gist of what I learned, they couln't find an available computer to let you all know what fun they are having. I am having a good snow day, ventured outside to clear a path for the dogs and it wasn't very cold. Tristen, I think that hill is way too big for you. I'm glad you are tough. And that Mom had hot chocolate too. Are you Minnesotans and Iowans snowed in too? No school here today and Linz missed it. It is my kind of snow. No wind and pretty light stacking up on everything.

Amanda
1/31/2002
Snow day for me!!! Oh, wait, everyday is a snow day for me, even those 60 degree days last week!

Tristen
1/31/2002
This snow day stinks! Dance class got cancelled tonight! I went sledding for an hour last night, down the BIG hill behind my house. Sasha ran into me hard and I fell with my face in the snow. I was SO cold when I came in, but mom made hot chocolate. Daddy "busted out" the snow blower.

Gary
1/31/2002
No snow day for the University (#%$&*!!) so I'm at work today; but Lindsey and Livy are missing a school snow day! I guess they'll just have to make the best of it, and suffer through another day at Disney World....

Ryan
1/28/2002
Thanks for the recipes! We will be trying them out soon!

Let me revise my note of yesterday about LOTR: The box office results for this weekend just past are in, and LOTR has slipped from #2 to #9 because of new films being released. Some theaters have dropped it and gone on to newer films (563 have dropped it nation-wide), but it is still showing on six screens in Omaha, three in Lincoln. So I would revise my advice to: "See it sooner rather than later."

In other movie news, with the Oscar nominations about two weeks away, here is an article from the L.A. Times with some early predictions as to who will be nominated.

Amanda
1/27/2002
Gary~
Any idea how long LOTR will be in theaters? Ryan has yet to go and he doesn't want to miss it there...

It all depends on the box office. Back when it opened, it was estimated that LOTR would be in theaters at least through March; and I haven't heard anything yet to contradict that. Though last weekend, for the first time since it opened, it was not #1 but #2. So I guess I would expect it to be around for a while -- at least another month -- but I'd recommend seeing it sooner rather than later. --Gary

Amanda
1/27/2002
Hey, whoever made the potatoes at Grandma's on Saturday could you send the recipe to the recipe page! That was excellent! Also, Ryan wants the recipe for the carrots (if there is one), he is becoming quite the cook/baker....

Olivia
1/26/2002
Hey Gary want to do that "measuring thing."
hahahahah isint that funny.

Very funny! :-) For those of you not "in the know," that is Livy's and my favorite line from Shrek. (Be sure to make the "quote-marks" with your fingers when you say it!) --Gary

Hey Sasha, just to remind you I'm going to be visiting Penny for 7 days. Catch me there. Hey how is your new kid Tegan doing. Has she taken you out for a walk? Well got to "run" bye.

Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday dear Teghan, Happy birthday to you!!
Seems like only weeks you came home from the hospital!!
Love ya!!

I am 4 weeks old today!

Sean
1/24/2002
Well yeah, the t.v. version was filmed there. I'm sorry I guess I didn't realize that was the mess we were trying to clear up. I could have saved you the research trouble. I only know this because of the t.v. version. I have never seen the actual movie. I don't know if I will like it as much, because after all I have never been to the "other" hotel.

Lindsey
1/24/2002
One more day of school and then FLORIDA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amanda
1/23/2002
I stand corrected. After conferring with Ryan he says the TV version with Rebecca D. was filmed there, also starring that guy from that older TV show Wings.... He said the movie version hotel looks nothing like the Stanley...

Sean
1/23/2002
I remember the hotel and it's tribute to The Shining. We seen the hotel in the middle of summer, it was still very neat but I want to see it covered in snow just like in the movie. Better yet, rent a room there for the night and watch the movie, room 412 or 413 I believe. Creepy!! I think you can rent the t.v. version of the movie in the local movie spot in Estes Park.

Okay, here's the answer, I think, on the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park: Stephen King stayed there once, and then wrote "The Shining" about that hotel. Then they made a movie of the book starring Jack Nicholson, which was filmed in Oregon (the exteriors, anyway). Later they made another movie of the book, for TV, starring Rebecca DeMornay -- and that one was filmed at the Stanley Hotel. I think that's it! ...And Banff doesn't enter into it at all.... --Gary

Amanda
1/23/2002
The hotel has a TON of Shining memorabilia, including photographs from the filming. They even have a gift shop of just Shining stuff. I'll ask Ryan what he remembers from being there.... Maybe I am imagining it....

Donna
1/23/2002
Lindsey, I think the trip is planned for this weekend. Will that be a problem for you? Just kidding. Have fun at Disney World. Tell Mickey I said "hi."

Amanda
1/23/2002
Though that looks like the Shining Hotel, the actual hotel used is in Estes Park Colorado. We have toured it, and it is a little eery how it sits at the top of town just watching down. A very cool place, old and historical.

Hmmm, this is becoming a real mystery! I started doing a little detective work on this after your first note below, and found all kinds of contradictory stories. I found a very heated discussion on this subject on a movie-discussion site. Some said the movie was filmed at a hotel (unnamed) in Banff; others, quoting an official "Shining" webpage, said the exteriors were filmed at a hotel in Oregon; and yet others insisted it was filmed, as you said, at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, CO. The Stanley Hotel website doesn't directly mention the movie -- but if you highlight the green horizontal bar on that page, like you were highlighting text, the words "Overlook Lodge, Steven King, The Shining" suddenly appear, with no other explanation. Weird!! Some said King once stayed at the Stanley and based his book on it; but no filming was done there. So I don't know! --Gary

Hi everyone.... As reigning queen of the Golden Globes let me take a few minutes to mingle with the common folks. :)

Hey, that should be "CO-Queen"...er, "Co-Ruler"....

Marsha~ We got your box and wanted to thank you guys. I have to come to that store of yours someday, everything you sent us was great! We already have a picture of Teghan in the picture frame. Like Ryan said, you hit it right on with the stars! And when Tristen opened her gift she said, "It's what I've always wanted! That Marsha."

And Lindsey & Olivia~ I have not told Tristen where you guys are going, and do not mention it to her, because she is liable to stow away in your suitcases, she has been BEGGING to go to Walt Disney World for a year! If I don't talk to you before you go, have fun!

Gary~ What is the picture on the front page today? Or where rather?

It is the Chateau Fairmont, a resort in Banff, Alberta (Canada). I think it was the location where they filmed The Shining with Jack Nicholson. --Gary

Beautiful, wish we had snow. However, the last 2 days we have taken about a mile walk and let Tristen play at the parks and been out for hours in the afternoon, and it has been great, makes me SO ready for spring, but with that brings hot, muggy, humid summer! Ryan had to go into work today, just a training day, M16, has to do it every two years, so it is Teghan & Tristen & I's first day home alone. So far, so good. Teghan is doing good. We upped her food intake, and she seems to be a little less fussy. She has a hollow leg though, I don't know where she puts it all! Hard to believe on Friday she will be 4 weeks old. Time already is going WAY to fast! Tristen is doing well, we're trying to keep her busy at home, the nice weather helps. On Sunday I took her to Kids Explore at the Civic Auditorium, lots of booths with lots of kid things to do and cool stuff for them to take home. We went 2 yeas ago, and this year it was just a Tristen day there, just her & I, she loved that!

Moving on, I think a little trip sounds great! Pella sounds nice, course I LOVE tulips! Ryan wants pancakes from the place in Minnesota, that guy, still thinking about pancakes from what, 2 years ago? Wherever we decide we may go I hope it isn't to far, don't know how traveling with 2 kids will be! But it will be practice, this summer we are going to Colorado for a week to stay with some friends, that'll be a 9 hour drive, yikes! Anywho, just wanted to check in, haven't been online in a few days, which is very rare for me! Just can't find the time with high maintenance Teghan!

Lindsey

What weekend were you planning on going?? That would be fun to see all the cousins. I'll get my parents on here to say somethin about it. TTYL, Bye.

Donna
1/22/2002
That sounds good to me, too. Is Pella close to Ames? I wouldn't mind going there again either. But any place is fine with me.

Karen

I think Marsha has a great idea!

Marsha
1/21/2002
Hey everyone. We were just thinking about the great food at the Hickory Pit in Ames, Iowa. The DesMoines area might be a good destination for a weekend get-away if anyone is interested in getting together for a couple of days and include a trip to that restaurant. A nice hotel with a pool for the kids would be a plus. Any ideas or suggestions? Buh-bye everyone.

Lindsey
1/21/2002
Hello again everyone! We leave for Florida on Sunday at 7:00 and it's in Omaha and we have to be at the airport two hours early so we have to get up at our house at about 2:45 IN THE MORNING!!! Oh well, it will be worth it. Hope to get some neat pictures for the webpage. We'll try to get get some of Disney World maybe. I'll get some of the condo we're staying at. It should be lots of fun. We'll be staying there from Sunday and coming back Sunday (the next week).
Gary~If you only would've put up that one more question I probably could've won NOT!!!!! j/k Gar.
Sean~How can you be bored with a TV like that at your house. When I came and saw it, it was taller than me and your surround sound and all that other stuff that goes with it. Geez!!! j/k! I know how ya feel!
Olivia and I got today off and last Thursday and Friday off for semester break. I can't believe how fast this school year has gone, it's already half over!
Metcalf Family~How are you all doin? How is Teghan getting along? Is she to normal sleeping hours yet??
Well, I better go, buh-bye! :)

Gary
1/21/2002
So, did you watch the Golden Globes last night?? Pretty good show! And as usual, they were hard to predict -- most people agree that the Globes have more surprises than the Oscars do. Plus, if you were playing along at home, you might have noticed I forgot to include the "Best Movie Score" category on our ballot -- sorry about that!

Sean
1/19/2002
Amanda I'm responding to your comment on 1-16-02. The part where you said you were staying at home with nothing to do. It must be nice for you guys but I'm about sick of it. I have nothing to do, and it's too cold to do anything outside. Now it snowed, so if I did get brave enough to go out in the cold I got the snow to deal with. I'M READY FOR SPRING/SUMMER!!! I got a big list of things to do and finish up when that time comes...

Thanks to everyone who commented on the pictures. I have a great one of Tristen holding Teghan, but can't figure out my scanner, so it may be a while. The ones I posted I got off of the Kodak picture CD that I had made when I developed the roll. Teghan is doing well, gaining weight and sleeping lots. She isn't as content of a baby as Tristen was, but such is life, we were warned! We are doing nothing around here it feels like, Ryan still has a good 20 days of leave left, so we are basically doing nothing, which feels great. I only wish we had tons of snow to look at and know that we had no where to go! Well, thanks again for the compliments on Teghan, I think we will keep her.

Gary
1/16/2002
The Golden Globes awards are on this Sunday night. It's not the Oscars, but it is a nice warm-up! If you want to practice your winner-picking skills, fill out the Gold Globes ballot, just for fun. I'll post the results of everyone's ballots on Monday.

Marsha
1/15/2002
Thanks for putting up those adorable pictures of Teghan! She is as cute as Mom had said. Are you Metcalfs getting any sleep yet? We mailed a box to you today - should be there in 6 days (the post office guy wondered if it was where Bush had been taken when he saw your address.) We got about 5 inches of snow, but it's not so bad.

Gary
1/14/2002
To those of you watching the Oscar race shape up (the nominations will be out in about a month!), this may be interesting: (a) "Lord of the Rings" is still the top money-maker -- it has been the #1 film for four consecutive weeks now, bringing in over $500 million worldwide. (b) Russell Crowe's "A Beautiful Mind" came in at #2 last week. And (c) "Ali," in only its 3rd week, has dropped out of the top ten. The Oscars aren't only about money, of course... but they're also not not about money! :-)

Donna
1/14/2002
Amanda, I saw Swordfish this weekend and I really liked it, too. But did you understand the ending? Because I don't think I got it. Did you also see at the very end they had an alternate ending? I liked that one better. But it still doesn't make sense when you think about Stan in the morgue. If you know what I mean. I don't want to ruin it for anybody that hasn't seen it yet.

Donna
1/14/2002
Teghan is so cute. I think she looks like Tristen. How about working on a picture with Tristen holding Teghan? I wish I was off today. Oh well, just 5 months to go til our next holiday. Geez. Karen was remembering that a year ago this time we were all home on a snow day. Amanda got stuck in the snow. And we were all asking for dogs next to our notes. Wish we were snowed in today.

Karen
1/14/2002
Thanks for the pictures of Teghan - what a cutie!!! We we all very anxious to get to see her. I wanted to send some cards on the Blue Mountain at Christmas - then I saw that it was for paid members only - so I won't be doing it with them anymore. Not much else going on here. Emily, Erika and I all have the day off - teacher inservice - Woke up to a dusting of snow, under it is a coating of ice. Should all be melted by noon.

Amanda

Here is Teghan Noel Metcalf! Born December 28th at 11:53PM. She weighed in at 7 pounds 5 ounces and was 19 1/2 inches long. I may send some more pictures separately so those of you who have to download won't get bogged down. Sorry it took so long, hope you enjoy!!!!! She is doing GREAT by the way, has her 2 week well baby check tomorrow!

Amanda
1/11/2002
Anyone noticed Bluemountain.com is now for "paid members"? I just thought that was junk. Also, I should have some pictures on Sunday of Teghan, so check back!

Lindsey

Hey, I reserved the spot of being the listmaker last year! I wanted to pick the list.

Gary
1/10/2002
Gee, I didn't think anybody would notice.... Okay, here is the real Christmas list. Only 349 days til Christmas!

By the way, check out the Reviews index page. I added the reviewer's name after the movie title so you can see who reviewed it; and clicking on their name will take to you the page where their review appears.

Donna

Let's keep the Christmas list the way it is. The way I look at it, Gary buys for everybody.

Karen

We are so happy to hear about the new Metcalf baby!!! Teghan sure sounds really cute and she is really lucky to have Tristen as a big sister. Can't wait to see some pictures!

Ryan
1/1/2002
Yes, Teghan had a good time at Wal-Mart. We actually didn't make a special trip with our 3 day old to Wal-Mart though. She had a doctors appointment that morning, and we had to get her a different kind of formula anyway (our Wal Mart is our grocery store). Thanks for your concern though, she is doing good other than she is keeping me up all night!

Olivia
1/1/2002
Congratulations Amanda and Ryan and Tristen. I like Teghan she is very nice. She opened her eyes for me. Has she been around Sasha and Zoey? Did Zoey or Sasha ever lick Teghan? Did Teghan like Walmart?
