Congratulations to Oscar-winners Donna and (in the 17-and-under crowd) Lindsey! A very close race this year. Full details later!

"20Q" is a handheld electronic toy that plays 20 Questions. It's a blue disc about the size of a biscuit, and it plays a surprisingly good game -- it's very hard to stump! There is an online version (on which the toy is based) that is even smarter because it learns from all the people who play it. Go here to try it out: Click on "Play 20Q," and then on "Anonymous Login." You'll have to fill in a short form, and then you're good to go for as many games as you want. The toy is available at Target and WalMart and such like.

We got home about 5:30 -- good trip. We had lots of fun! Emily or Erika played 20Q all the way home -- great game! Glad we came -- really enjoyed it!
Gary
2/28/04
Fun day today: Shopping, games, and food. K, E, and E headed for home around 3. Thanks for driving down, you guys. Next time stay longer!
Gary
2/27/04
Karen and Emily and Erika arrived here in Lincoln about 6:30 (Brent had to stay home to feed the cats). The evening's fun was interrupted only by a quick trip to Walgreen's for a new toothbrush after Penny licked Erika's. :-) No plans for tomorrow yet, but I'm sure we'll do something!
Amanda

I had Subway's new Grilled chicken and baby spinach salad and it was so good. I had it made the Atkins way, not on the diet, but their Atkins wraps are so good, why mess up a good thing. And they didn't charge me for the honey mustard dressing. Try one today!
Emily

Hey everybody! We will be coming down tomorrow, Friday, after school, and get there about 7 or 8, and stay over and leave saturday afternoon, see you all soon!

Woo-hoo! See you tomorrow night! :-) --Gary

Happy to see the Nelson's are coming this weekend. I think the weather looks pretty good too. Yes, the Bush stories are depressing, however, there is very little news from my corner of the world. Hope all you sickies are improving. I wish I had invented "Ranch Dressing" not many things so well liked.
Gary
2/26/04
I didn't know that. I think I'll suggest to Ralph Nader that he investigate this, and also GET OUT OF THE RACE!!! Tomorrow is his 70th birthday, by the way. Happy Birthday, you self-centered ego-tripping lunatic!
Amanda
2/26/04
Everywhere charges for ranch these days. It's a crock. Especially with nuggets, you need some sauce, and ranch is a natural.
Gary
2/26/04
I hope all this depressing Bush stuff on the front page this week hasn't put a chill on the conversation here.... If not, I think the world is ready for another Pringles-like story. (Note: No Pringles were harmed during the making of this episode.) I was out running some errands over the noon hour, so on my way back to work I pulled into a McDonald's drive-thru and ordered some McNuggets.
McD: Would you like any sauce to go with them?
ME: Uh, yeah, how about Ranch?
McD: [pause] I'm going to have to charge you for the Ranch.
ME: ????? Then I'll take Barbecue, unless there's a charge for that too...?
McD: No, Barbecue it is!
Is there like a world-wide Ranch shortage or something? I blame Olivia!
Donna
2/26/04
Emily, I hope you guys come down this weekend. Maybe we could shop for eyeglasses while you're here. It's fun to look at all the frames. Do you and Erika want to do anything special while you're here?
Emily
2/25/04
Hey everybody, its been pretty quiet on here. We haven't been doing much either. I went to the eye doctor yesterday, and I have to get glasses, but I probably won't have to wear them all the time.
We're thinking about maybe coming to Lincoln this weekend, whats everybody doing??

Sounds good to me. :-) Stay for the whole weekend and we can watch the Oscars on Sunday night! --Gary

Karen
2/24/04
We got our Oscar packet in the mail today -- thanks! Emily went to the eye doctor this morning. She is a little near sighted and needs glasses. She is in the process of looking for frames :)
Gary
2/24/04
Happy Mardi Gras everybody!

Laissez le bon ton roulez!

By the way, I sent out the Oscar sheets yesterday, so watch your mailboxes....

Emily

Our dance recital is June 12, we're doing "Sweetheart" by Jay-Z and Beyonce, our costume is like white kinda cargo pants and a white tube top with a kinda like mesh top over it, and we also have a little white hat that goes with it.
Today at school in my dance class, we had a guest speaker come from Morningside College, to teach us some ballet stuff, and we started a little routine and we'll be doing that all week, so that should be fun, except that she kept making me demonstrate stuff.

Feel Better Everybody!!
Grandma
2/23/04
Congratulations, Linz, bet you had a long, but fun, day. When are your recitals, Emily and Erika? Was nice to visit with you yesterday, let's do it again!! Is this bug EVER going to leave this family?? Some one has been sick for a long time now, Get well everyone!! Good job selling all those cookies, Tristen, bet you are the best salesperson in Texas!

Donna
2/23/04
Arghh, I just tried to email my congressmen, but couldn't find any spot for emails--just mailing addresses. How did you do it?

The Hon. Doug Bereuter, making Nebraska proud by always being on the cutting edge, does not believe in email. There is no way to contact him electronically. (You can call his Lincoln office at 438-1598.) You can email our senators, however, via this link.

I heard that Irag is now saying it had bought parts for WMD. Why would they ever admit that? Especially now when the US is saying we made a mistake--that there never were any WMD? I'm betting the news pleased Bush.

I'm betting the news was created by Bush....

AND did you hear Johhny Depp won best actor at SAG Awards last night??? What is this world coming to?

That was surprising, considering the competition like Sean Penn. LOTR won an "ensemble" award for the entire cast. --Gary

Karen
2/23/04
Sickness continues around here. Erika and Brent are both home today. In fact Brent is at the doctors office now to see if he can't get some medicine to speed it along. John, are you feeling better?

Get well soon, everybody. Let's show them germs who's boss! --Gary

Gary
2/23/04
And I forgot to mention the other bit of political insanity in the news today. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenazi is backing a Constitutional amendment (already proposed by Orin Hatch, Republican lunatic from Utah) that would make it okay for foreign-born people to run for President of the United States. Gee, I wonder who they've got in mind...? Time to contact your Congress people, again...!

Gary
2/23/04
Madness, no? I used to admire and respect Nader, going all the way back to the "Unsafe at Any Speed" days, but any more I am doubting his sanity. First, if he thinks he is going to be elected, he is truly insane. So whatever his other motives are -- like "offering a choice" or "debating the issues" or whatever -- the only effect his running can possibly have will be, like in 2000, helping GWB. It is a colossally selfish ego-trip, at the cost of what's left of this country after four years of pillage by Bush. If you want to go to Nader's webpage and let him know what you think (as I did, saying essentially the above, plus the suggestion "GET OUT NOW!"), please do. Though with Nader's short-sightedness, he'll probably just count the number of emails he gets and think, "Wow, my candidacy is sure stirring up interest!" Grrrr!

Amanda
2/23/04
I agree with the Bush thing, but I'm beginning to think Ralph Nader is a Bush supporter. He is running again. That's all the democrats need, votes going to independents. We need every last vote. Didn't he learn the first time? I've got nothing against independents, some times I think it would be a better moral choice to vote ind. BUT, not a lucrative one! Oy, this just gets better and better.

Gary
2/23/04
Apologies to any Bush supporters for the front page(s) this week. On the other hand, it's time you faced the truth. :-)

Marsha
2/22/04
Hey Gary, if you really wanted to impress Perlman, why didn't you tell him about the Pringles? TWO cans.

Well, if he had witnessed it, I think he might have hired me as coach. You see, both cans landed without... well, I guess I made my point... --Gary

Erika
2/22/04
Hi My classes dance is Jail House Rock by the King of course. Our outfit is the Black and White jail thing we will tap dance behind jail bars!!!!!!! ;0 :0 ;) :)

Sounds cool, Erika! --Gary

Samantha and Anna
2/22/04
Congratulations Linsdey!!! That Rocks!!!

Lindsey
2/22/04
My competition dance is Jazz to "Back in Black" by ACDC but then I also do three other dances that aren't competition.

Emily
2/22/04
Hey everybody! Well, I have to go to the eye doctor on Tuesday, to see if I need glasses.
We're looking forward to the Oscars, should be fun, but Im sure I guessed most of them wrong.
Lindsey's dance uniform looks nice. We just got our costumes for the recital ordered a few weeks ago, theyre really cute.
Congratulations to Tristen on all of her cookie sales!! Cant wait for ours to get here!

Erika
2/22/04
Hi Gary its Erika ;) (: For The countdown page When I get out of Grade school it will be May 27th 2004!!!!!!!!! 0 yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

OK, I fixed it. Only 95 days! :-) --Gary

Karen
2/22/04
Congratulations Linsdey! What dances did you do?

Lindsey
2/21/04
I just watched the video "she bangs she bangs" again and everytime it is HILARIOUS!

Lindsey
2/21/04
I had my first dance competition today and we GOT FIRST IN GOLD! I sent in pictures!

Amanda
2/21/04
OK, after an order from Grandpa Paul, Aunt Stephenie and the Bath & Body Works girls, Tristen is at 262! Still hoping for a last minute order from Sean and Ryan & I need to place our order, so now she is shooting for 300! I got a few of the new aromatherapy things from Bath & Body Works, two of them are for cold & sinus, eucalyptus, mmm it smells great!

Amanda
2/21/04
Now I'm with you. We are laughing WITH you not AT you!

Amanda
2/21/04
With, not at? I'm missing something.

Sorry, that's a code phrase that I thought was more widespread -- especially as it comes from Tristen! From her we learned that a courteous audience member should laugh with the performer, not at the performer. :-) --Gary

Gary
2/21/04
One-hundred percent voter turnout! Sean and Olivia are now players in the Oscar sweepstakes, so we're all on board. Should be fun -- a week from tomorrow night!

Amanda sent me the link to this William Hung website -- you know, the "She bang" guy from American Idol. If you want to just view his audition, click on this movie clip. Amanda says they've watched it hundreds of times. :-) (Remember: With, not At!) The clip is 3 or 4 megabytes, so it can take a while to download to your machine. If you expect to view it more than once, just right-click on the movie clip link above and select "Save Target As..." That way, you will save the clip to your machine and can watch it while off-line.

And one more thing: I got a newsletter item this morning from Paul & Lori, but there was no text in it. Could y'all re-construct what you wrote and try it again?

Amanda
2/21/04
Tristen got her order from Grandma Kris and Donna placed her order last night and it set Tristen over 200. 202 to be exact. She is aiming for the next goal of 250 now. She really wants 400, which is a shower radio. And if she gets to 400 she gets her name in a drawing for a huge bear (like we have the space). I'm sure she will make it to that goal, because when she works at a booth sale that counts towards her total boxes.

Gary

Geek news: Because of the many recent security flaws in Microsoft products (and the viruses that exploited them), Microsoft is offering -- for free -- a CD which will update your version of Windows (98/SE/ME/2000/XP) and patch all the known holes. These updates are all available on the Microsoft website, but some of them are huge and downloading (even with DSL) can take a long time. So go here and give 'em your address, and wait for your update CD. Totally free, no postage even.

Amanda
2/20/04
I text messaged Sean and alerted him to the Oscar ballots. We will see if it did any good. While we are alerting people, if anyone sees or talks to Donna or my Dad & Lori, let them know Tristen wants to talk to them. She wants to see if they want to order cookies. They are the only ones we don't have an order from. Tristen has tried to call Donna twice now. Right now she is at 171 boxes!! She got a few orders from the block we walked this week. One house ordered 12 boxes from her! The lady used to be a girl scout leader, so she said she knew how hard it was and wanted to help out! I don't know that I would do that, but it sure helped Tristen! Hope Lindsey is feeling better, I think I am getting sick, if so, it is a very slow onset, I have felt crummy for two days now. Not outright sick, but yuck. I'm gonna go to Bath & Body Works and get some of the new aromatherapy cold & sinus remedy and see how it goes.

Gary
2/20/04
Drumroll please! We're getting voter turnout that Democrats only dream of...! :-) Brent and Lori are now officially in the mix, leaving only Olivia and Sean unaccounted for. If anyone has any contact with either of these outlaws in the next 48 hours, urge them to get on the Oscar train before it leaves the station. Thanks everybody! Should be a fun contest this year!

Gary
2/19/04
Oscar ballots have just arrived from Tristen and Ryan, so the great state of Texas is all accounted for. (Ryan claims, "I WILL WIN THIS YEAR!!!!!") So only Brent, Lori, Olivia, and Sean are waiting for inspiration. If you have to, just make random guesses -- I think that's what John did!

Gary
2/19/04
By the way, Lindsey, I've been trying that foot-hand thing ever since you mentioned it here. Aaaarrrrggghhh! :-)

Gary
2/19/04
All right! Teghan and Donna have taken time out of their busy schedules to make their Oscar picks. Can you -- Brent, Lori, Olivia, Ryan, Sean, and Tristen -- do less? Listen to your heart....

The countdown on the front page makes tomorrow the last day, but I can extend that deadline through the weekend because I won't get the scoresheets in the mail until Monday. But that's the final deadline: If you haven't made your picks by Monday morning you will only be a seat-filler on Oscar night, not a contender. It's sad, when you think about it.

Lindsey
2/18/04
Ok I tried to send this in an email and I don't know if it worked but my Dad sent this to me and thought it was pretty cool.

Ok, this is how your right and left brain affect you.

While sitting at your computer pick up your right foot off the ground and start moving it in circles clockwise.

Now while you're still doing that try and draw a 6 in the air with your right hand.

Your right foot will automatically start changing directions and there is nothing you can do about it no matter how hard or how many times you try........ :) Just thought it was something to start conversation on the webpage!

Gary
2/18/04
Get well soon, Lindsey! :-)

Gary
2/18/04
Good for Tom! Classy.
Here's a non-Pringles-related story I could share:

Every couple of weeks, the Chancellor of the University (Harvey Perlman) sends out to all the faculty and staff a chatty informal e-mail about what's going on in his office and around the campus, etc. Last week's message started thus:

First there are budget cuts, then football coaches, and now the worst snowfalls in decades. We should probably get ready for locusts and the plague this Spring.

I wrote this back to him, saying I would respectfully like to take issue with that statement:

Including "football coaches" with budget cuts and snowfalls suggests that the coaching situation was something out of your control, like an act of God or legislation from the Capitol. But that shameful and embarassing business, which tarnished the Nebraska football program to the point that Tom Osborne wants to remove his name from it, was an act of Steve Pederson -- with, I gather, your complete support.

Later that day, he replied:

Sorry if you were offended. You are free to think as you will but as you might guess I didn't see anything shameful and embracing about changing the leadership of a program that was declining in quality.
Harvey

(By "embracing" I'm sure he meant "embarassing.") I don't know which papers he's reading, if any, but I would hope he knows it was more than just me who was "offended." :-) I always liked Perlman before this coaching fiasco, but he's taken a real popularity hit (here on the campus certainly, and elsewhere I'm sure) by siding with Pederson on this.

Donna
2/18/04
Hey, I'm around. Just nothing exciting to write about.

I did read in the paper today that Osborne is giving up his skybox. He says as senator he didn't want it to appear as though he was being shown favoritism (the skybox was a gift in '99 from former athletic director Bill Byrnes). Osborne said he just wanted to be like a regular person and sit in stadium seats like everyone else. He just hopes he can find tickets for next season. (Uh, I bet he has no problem.) He said his decision had nothing to do with the firing of Solich, but I think he's trying to show his disapproval of all that's happened.

Lindsey
2/18/04
Hey everyone, still home sick but I am pretty sure I am going tomorrow. Man I wish I was over this!

Gary
2/18/04
So far Amanda, Anna, Emily, Erika, Gary, Grandma, John, Karen, Lindsey, Marsha, Paul, Samantha, and Zachary have answered the call and gotten their Oscar ballots in. They are true American heroes....

Still pondering their answers are Brent, Donna, Lori, Olivia, Ryan, Sean, Teghan, and Tristen. When you think you've got the combination that can take the trophy away from Samantha, vote!

Amanda
2/17/04
Where is Donna? She hasn't been on in almost a week!

Amanda
2/17/04
Get better everyone. Rough sick season this year. Anyhow, get healthy so we can get some better conversation on this page.... pringles...

I don't think you all fully appreciate the fact that it was two cans, and they both landed right side up. Both of them! Each of the two, at the same time! --Gary

Gary
2/17/04
Get well soon, Emily

and Lindsey!

Karen
2/17/04
Emily is home sick today. Has a nasty cold, so she is on the couch. Sun is shining and snow is melting.....

Lindsey
2/16/04
I stayed home sick today. Been sick with a flu-cold type thing that I just can't seem to shake. Thought it was some other news besides pringles :).................

Dang, Lindsey, that thing does really hang on -- I know! Hope you get over it soon! --Gary

Amanda
2/16/04
I caught that it was TWO cans, actually I wondered why it was two cans. Isn't one enough for a snack?

Sure, one is "enough" for a snack. But not enough for variety. One Jelly Belly jellybean is good, but two or three or more different kinds is much better! :-) --Gary

Karen
2/16/04
OK, I'll try writing some news.... but it's boring here!! Brent had the day off for Presidents day. Emily, Erika and I all had to go -- for a snow make-up day. Emily has a cold. Is there any snow left in Texas? Not much better than the Pringle story......

I just want to say that was a pretty good story, I thought. Did you catch that it was two cans? And they both landed without spilling?? --Gary

Amanda
2/16/04
OK people, we need news. If Gary is talking about dropping pringles we need something else to talk about.

Ahhh, my evil scheme worked....! --Gary

Gary
2/16/04
You know how when you drop a piece it toast, it lands on the jelly side? Or when you drop a quarter it always rolls under the refrigerator or someplace? Well, today I knocked over two open canisters of Pringles (Cheddar Cheese and Salt & Vinegar) simultaneously, and they both landed upright on the floor, on their bottoms, without spilling a crumb. I guess the Law of Averages does work!

Gary
2/16/04
As of today, the next Oscar winner will be either Amanda, Emily, Erika, Gary, Grandma, John, Karen, Lindsey, Marsha, or Paul! These competitors are all poised to take the trophy away from Samantha.

Not yet on board are Anna, Brent, Donna, Lori, Olivia, Ryan, Samantha, Sean, Teghan (though sadly Jay-Jay the Jet Plane was not among the nominees this year), Tristen, and Zachary. Can't win if ya don't play!

Amanda
2/14/04
We have been out enjoying the snow for almost 3 hours now! Here are some more photos. All the neighbors are out, and the temps are in the high 20's, its great!!!!!

Emily
2/14/04
I got 14 out 25 on the Oscar Quiz, and mom got 20.
Happy Valentines Day Everybody!!

Grandma
2/14/04
What a nice surprise for the Metcalf's! That is the kind of snow you can appreciate, ours is hard and crusty and dirty now and it can leave anytime. I heard it was rare but that Dallas would get snow, and am glad it got to your place.

Ryan, Amanda, Tristen & Teghan
2/14/04

Happy Valentines Day everyone! It's snowing!!!! We got snow for Valentine's Day! The first we have ever seen here. Ahh, its a beautiful day!

Nelson's
2/14/04
Happy Valentines Day

Lindsey
2/13/04
I got a 17 out of 25 on the quiz and the percent was like 60-something.

Amanda
2/13/04
Whew, that quiz was hard. I got a whopping 14 out of 25 right. I'm at 56%!

Gary
2/13/04
Hey, as a warm-up for the Oscars, here is an Oscar Quiz I just whipped up. Give it a try, and then let us know how you did. It's kind of tough -- I made the thing, but just now I missed two! :-)

And here's yet another reminder: Unless your name is Amanda, Emily, Erika, Gary, Grandma, Karen, Lindsey, or Paul, you haven't voted yet. Please do!

Amanda
2/13/04
Tristen is looking to be the top seller in our troop of 13 girls (she came in 2nd with nut sales) so pass along the word. Cookies are $3 a box, we have 8 different kinds. Cookies come in a case of 12 boxes, so for only $36 you can have LOTS of your favorites, or extras to share. Remember they freeze well.

You also can participate in Gift of Sharing, which is a charitable contribution. Just tell us how many boxes you would like to order for the charity our troop chose to donate to (the Friendly Door, a senior citizen center in Iowa Park) and we will add it to your order. The cost is the same, so donate in increments of $3.

Please have your order to us no later than Saturday February 21st. You can email us or call us with your order. Tristen will deliver a personal thank you. Cookies will be delivered sometime in mid March. After you order we will figure out payment arrangements.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING TRISTEN & GIRL SCOUT BROWNIE TROOP 42!!!

Amanda
2/12/04
I just made my Oscar picks. Yuck. I'm not too confident. But I went with the crowd with Nemo, we love that movie. If I don't win this year I quit, remember just how close I get EVERY year! Where is my lifetime achievement award?

Karen
2/12/04
I'm guessing (if it's not LOTR) Finding Nemo for best animation? Amanda -- go for Honor's Society -- always good experience and it looks good on a resume.

"Finding Nemo" it is! Well done. I'm putting together an interesting collection of Oscar Trivia right now. I'll include it when I mail out the score sheets. I agree about Mortar Board on your resume. Can't hurt! Plus the cool merchandise! I like the navy sweatshirt. --Gary

Amanda
2/12/04
Johnny Depp POTC?

Nope. --Gary

Amanda
2/12/04
Cookie sales start tomorrow! We are ready for the wild ride!!! I'll send out an email later tonight and one to Gary for the webpage. Tristen has her class Valentine's party tomorrow, and she can't wait. I organized the thing, so I hope it goes OK. I have my first test for the semester on Monday, Spanish no less. Yuck. I got invited to apply to join an Honors Society here, called Mortar Board. I don't know much about it, other than it's for those with a 3.0 and higher, and for those about to embark on their senior year. They only take 50 a year here at Midwestern. Mortar Board is national. I asked one of my professors about it and he told me to do it. I'm not sure yet. Then he asked me if I was part of Alpha Chi, another Honors society I guess. This is where I get lost in college. So I don't know what to do. Sometimes I think I just want to go to school, study, get good grades and graduate. Then all this comes about. It makes the reality of graduation seem more real though.

Donna
2/12/04
Uh, I'm guessing that would be your LOTR for best picture category.

And you would be wrong! :-) That would be the natural guess, I agree; but even in that category there was some disgreement. I'll post the answer later today in case others want to think about it some more. --Gary

Gary
2/12/04
The Oscars are sneaking up on us early this year: only 8 more days to get your ballots in. Emily, Erika, Gary, Grandma, Karen, Lindsey, and Paul have already voted... >Have you???

By the way, in one category so far, the voting has been unanimous. Any guesses on which category that might be...?

Donna
2/12/04
Happy birthday, Abe!

Happy Valentine's Day everybody!

Amanda, The aromatherapy stuff sounds wonderful. I'm going to have to take a look at all the scents. The lavendar would be great if it wasn't for the vanilla--gives me a headache. Uh, how do I go about using your discount here? Just mention your name or what? ;-)

She bangs, she bangs...

Karen

Another cold and snowy morning. Just flurries, but looks like a mini blizzard. Erika is the cross guard until the first of March. Yesterday was a cold time for her. I think she is enjoying it though! Emily has spent the last two days in her biology class making their shelter. She is in a group of 4. They had to make a shelter big enough for all of them to fit in. They used a tree that had some branches down. They also each had a garbage sack to use for the roof. The first day she was COLD and wet (having fallen down a hill a few times). Yesterday went better. Today they are finishing their shelter, then making a fire. She brought graham crackers for S'Mores (if the fire gets going). Tomorrow they can bring sleds for a fun day. Next week they will be making a trap to see if they can capture an animal (extra credit if they catch one). Our plumbing troubles continue..... After three visits from the plumber in the last two weeks and two floods (one in the basement and one in the kitchen). I am hoping that it is fixed. Had to replace some pipes going to the kitchen sink. What a mess! Have to wait a few days for everything to dry out! It "rained" in the kitties room and they were freaked out yesterday -- took us awhile to figure out why.
Tristen -- when can I order Girl Scout Cookies?

Paul and Lori
2/11/04
Thank you so much for the Teghan pictures, Those girls just can't take a bad picture!! Course I'm biased. Livy is still a little under the weather, but she will not say so, she's a tough one, thanks again Mom for spending the days with her. A lot of activity on the webpage for me to look at, I will, but right now Sean wants to get on, so I will sign off.

Happy Valentines Day everyone

Grandma
2/11/04
I loved the Teghan pictures too. Thank You for them!! Also love the one of Tristen with the Valentine cookies on the front page. Emily, did you get your fire started today? I would love details of your survival week. Erika, Congratulations on your new job, how long will you be doing it and is it more fun than Bunny sitting? Livy, are you feeling better today? I hope so! She and I played lots of cards and she beat me most of the time so be prepared if she comes to your house with her deck of cards.

Happy Valentine's Day, Everyone!!

Gary
2/11/04
I need to direct your attention yet again to the reviews page. Amanda sent in a review a few days ago that got lost in my email system. I just posted it today, so you may have missed it. Sorry, Amanda!

Amanda
2/11/04
The reason Donna asked if Tristen saw it is because Tristen goes through the house singing it, "she bangs, she bangs!" We both do really. That kid was great though, and he will have a great life anyway, going to some big U to be an engineer of some sort. What got me was that at the end after they told him no he said something like 'what matters is that I tried my hardest.' It was neat. Very un-American, our good ol' Americans were usually yelling or arguing with a 'no.' And the outfit they got was the leopard one. The white one was just one we threw together for the roses picture, white looked best with the roses. Donna, what do you think about the Aromatherapy stuff?

Lindsey
2/11/04
Donna~ My Mom found the outfit and we all gave it to her. Also I did see the American Idol with the "she bangs she bangs..." that cracked me up!!! Then he's like "I haven't had any previous dancing or singing lesson." Do ya think? :)

Jimmy Fallon did an impression of that guy on last week's Saturday Night Live. Too funny. I'm betting American Idol brings him back as a wildcard just because he's gotten so "famous." :-) --Gary

I'd like to draw your attention to the reviews page -- not to toot my own horn about the review I just wrote of the "Return of the King" PC game, but to alert anyone who may be interested in it that the game is now selling for 20 bucks or so at Target and other places. A steal!

Thanks for the picture of Teghan! All of them were great but the one where she's laying down is adorable!!! Lindsey did you give Teghan one of the outfits?
Amanda, did you guys watch American Idol last night? "She bangs, she bangs..." It cracked me up and I was hoping Tristen was watching it. I'd like to see Tristen (future American Idol winner) to write up a review after the shows or something. Especially since she can pick the talent as well as the judges.

Amanda--ALL of the pictures are ADORABLE! I also like the outfit (wink wink) :) Very cute!

Ryan - Amanda - thanks for the picture of Teghan -- what a cutie!!
My last day off, back to preschool tomorrow. I have a new project that I've been doing. Finally decided to strip about 40 years of paint off of the crown molding in the dinning room and livingroom. After the past week I have most of one wall done!! Slow process, but I think it looks much better -- will have to send some photos later. Erika has a new "job." She is cross guard at her school. Been waiting since the beginning of the school year for her turn. Started yesterday. So she has to go ten mintues earlier in the morning and stay 10 minutes after school. She also gets to wear a very stylish orange vest :) Emily has a fun week in her biology class. They are learning about outdoor survival. Today she was to start a fire and keep it burning for 5 minutes. Tomorrow they have to make a shelter using only a garbage sack. Sure she will have more details later.

We have just been busy here. As usual. Saturday I had to go to work, I was on call and thought for sure they wouldn't need me, but I did have to go in. Then Sunday Tristen had a birthday party to go to at 1 at Chuck E Cheese. Then I had a work meeting at 3:30 that lasted until about 6 when the mall closed. Then we had a pizza party given to us by Bath & Body Works corporate because we sold the highest amount of gift sets in our district, which includes Dallas and Ft. Worth. We also had a buying party, where we got 75% off 2 Aromatherapy items. The meeting was about some new Aromatherapy stuff coming out, Sunday I believe. Donna, I thought of you right away. The new stuff includes, Remedies, an Aromatherapy approach to common things like muscle aches, cold and sinus, and the one I want to try, headaches. Also, now we will offer the ability to "mix" your own aromatherapy scents. By using the concentrated oils and a base lotion or shower gel or whatever. That sounds cool to me too. No, I'm not a commercial, just thought a few of you on here might enjoy it. We get all of our stuff Sunday, so I would check your stores then too. With my 75% off I got a sugar scrub in Lavendar Vanilla which helps to enduce sleep and it is GREAT! I love the scent, I already had it in lotion. I also got the same scent in a candle. All this was $40, and I got it for $10. Sweeeeeeeet. Anyhow, Girl Scout cookies Friday! At Brownies yesterday that's all we did was talk about cookies and practice selling. Our girls are ready! Well, this oughta take up some space in the newsletter!

MoveOn.org, my favorite activist group, is putting together a petition demanding that Bush be censured for his lies ...ok, "misleading statements" about Iraq, WMDs, and the war in general. They already have over 250,000 signatures, and will deliver it to Congress tomorrow. Go here and add yours. (I did!)

It is awfully quiet here. I have the day off for a teacher inservice.
I thought windstream must be having trouble. I wasn't able to get on since yesterday afternoon. I love the pictures of the cookies. Wish I was your neighbor. Finally getting a nice day, no snow for three days and the sun is shining. Maybe a little of the snow will begin to melt this week. Waiting for a plumber to show up. The new faucet is leaking!! Hope it's a minor problem.

Gary

And one more note to point out that, counting this one, I have made the past seven entries here. That means 1) I now hold the record for consecutive newsletter items, and 2) the rest of you are being awfully quiet!

Gary
2/9/04
Astute readers of this site will notice that I've had the same front page up for two days in a row. That's because windstream was down for at least twelve hours -- last night and this morning -- so I wasn't able to change the page last night. But hey, it's a great picture!

Amanda found a couple of interesting pages on the site I mentioned yesterday. This one has photos of damage caused by a tornado in North Platte in 1927. (She noted that one photo was taken by a Sam Anderson and another by a Claus Anderson.) And this one has a couple of creepy photos from a tornado in Grand Island. (These pages are photo-heavy, and will take a while to download over a modem.)

After posting my previous note, I've spent a long time looking at all the photos in this great archive I mentioned. I know I'll be using some of these photos on our front page in the future. (Maybe a theme week, or a theme month!) Here's an interesting photo pair.

And speaking of weather photos, Emily has sent in a few more for the recent photos page. (I like your hat, Erika!)

Speaking snow photos, Amanda, here's a site someone told me about just this morning with some good pictures of the recent Lincoln snowfall. This guy posts Nebraska weather photos all the time, and has an archive going back to October 1999. (Check out the picture from Ravenna on July 24, 2002, which I just picked at random -- amazing!)

Gary
2/6/04
Yeah, people are nice, especially when the weather or something brings them together. I also like to think it's a particularly Nebraska thing. I have a friend in Colorado who lived in Nebraska for a couple of years, and she always talks about how nice and helpful the people are here, as compared to her home state!

Hey, if the Oscars were shown tonight, the winner would be either Emily, or Karen, or Lindsey, or me -- because we're the only ones who have sent in ballots! Don't forget to make your choices!

Amanda

Well, Gary, aren't you glad you live near such good samaritans? And you yourself! And why are a lot of schools closed today? Omaha especially. Not Lincoln of course. And how about Sioux City? I liked Donna's cool site yesterday, at the end I didn't pick a party affiliation, and when it tallied everyone Bush matched up to my beliefs with a whopping 23 percent. It was neat.
Tristen has the day off today, teacher inservice, and Ryan is staying home with her. I already missed 2 days for her being sick. Oh, and I saw some more recent pictures of Lincoln snow, the last ones I saw were the original snow from Linz, these new ones were from last night at my moms, WOW! Teghan saw them and said, "cooold."

Another snow day for us -- actually a two hour late start, but no preschool. There was already a scheduled day off on Monday - so no school for me until Tuesday! We got about 8 inches this time. I think I may be ready for some warmer weather......

Gary

Sorry for the delay if you had trouble getting on. (I couldn't access this page for nearly an hour this morning myself.) I called windstream and was told they are having some problems today....

Snowdrift update: Another neighbor got stuck in the alley as I was waiting for the tow truck, so I (and another passerby) gave him a push (i.e., several) so he got free. Then they both got behind my car -- and couldn't budge it. But then another passerby passed by and helped out with a push. Bingo! I slewed out of the alley kicking up a fountain of snow and drove around the corner to park on the street in front of my house. Where tonight, no doubt, the snowplow will bury me. By the way, I've learned that alleys belong to no one. My landlord, when I complained, said it's the city's responsibility; the city, when I complained, informed me that all they do is grade it in the summer -- they don't touch it in the winter. And my insurance company, when I called them to arrange a tow, said I'm not covered if I'm in an alley -- only a street or highway. (To their credit though, the lady I talked with said she would overlook that little technicality and send a truck anyway. Which it turned out I didn't need and was able to cancel before they came out here.) Wheee! Fun!

Lindsey
2/5/04

Yeah it was snowing pretty good today for a while and then it stopped but I heard we were supposed to get more today/tonight.

Gary
2/5/04

And here's my snow update: I'm stuck in a snowdrift -- again! Just a few feet from where I was stuck last night. But this time I'm really stuck, and there's no help around. So I've called for a tow truck to get me out. No, I didn't go to work today. I can't remember the last time I was stuck in the snow (years and years and years), and here it has happened twice in 24 hours. This is getting very close to being not fun any more...!

Emily
2/5/04

Hey everybody, we had school this morning, but after it had been snowing all morning we got an early out, but mom picked us up at 11:30. weve already gotten about 4 inches and its still coming down!!

Karen
2/5/04

Here's our latest snow update. Schools are dismissing two hours early. I picked up Emily and Erika about 11. They are outside now. Emily is shoveling the driveway and Erika is filling the wood box. Looks like we may be getting a long week-end.....

Karen
2/5/04

Snow again for us! Got about an inch overnight and it's really coming down now. Could get up to 6 inches before it's over. We must have over 20 inches on the ground now. Running out of places to put it when we shovel.

Snowing here too, but school is on. We're not getting nearly as much as predicted. Even so, I got stuck last night! This was before the new snow even started. I was in the alley behind my house, not six feet from my parking place, and I got high-centered. I noticed another guy further down the alley who was stuck too, so I helped him dig out; then he came over and helped me get my car moving. A lot of work though! I called the city snow removal guys and reported this alley; they said they'll add it to the list.... --Gary

Yeah I heard we were supposed to get around 8 inches and ALL of my teachers were like "Well in case of a snow day tomorrow..." and "Probably a Snow Day tomorrow" and even some of them thought if we had Thursday off we would have Friday off because they would have no place to put the snow! Crazy! So I don't what we are going to do when we have to make them up if we will have to have longer days or if they will take off of Spring Break or add on the year or whatever! I just don't know! Dad said that he hasn't seen snow like this forever and right now on the ground we have 20 inches I think!

Feel Better Tristen!!

Gary
2/4/04
Everyone is in school right now (8:30 am), yes. Snow is expected to start at any minute, though (here in Lincoln), and continue right on through Friday. Expectations are for around 8 more inches of snow. So no snow day today, but maybe tomorrow...?

Amanda
2/4/04
More snow?? Everyone is already at school though, right? It's drizzly/rainy here. 37 degrees so no snow. Tristen & I are home again, we are going to see how she feels at lunch time.

Lindsey
2/3/04
I hope you get better soon Tristen! That's gotta be tough but I bet that bed will help you out.

BTW: The message from Grandma talking about Tristen's bedroom is from both of us just in case you were wondering why it said "we."

Amanda

Yeah, the scarlet fever thing does seem outdated. It's a rash that spread on her body (just overnight) mostly on her back and chest. It goes hand in hand with strep throat I'm understanding. And as for quarantine, not here. Maybe they just understand things better today, but then again it is pretty contagious. Who knows. Hers isn't awful, we caught it early, and her antibiotic must be supercharged, she only takes it once a day for five days. If we don't run out, it looks like a 2 day, not 5 day supply.

Yeah, the doc gave it to me in 5-day amounts too. The first round didn't do it, but the second round (just finished) did -- I hope! BTW, the UNL webcam isn't working at the moment; we just had a campus-wide power outage (thanks to a construction crew slicing a cable or something) that lasted nearly half an hour. And we're noticing some things (like maybe the webcam) have slower start-up times than others. --Gary

Tristen, I'm sorry you aren't feeling well. But guess what? The UPS truck will be making a stop at your house in a couple days. Grandma, Gary, Lindsey, Olivia and I made something special for you and your sister, so we hope you love it. Get better fast, okay?

Grandma

Still semi snowbound, but sun is out and most of the schools are open here. If we miss tomorrow's storm, I won't really care. My wood pile is completely under snow. Amanda, Tristen sounds really sick to me, strep is bad enough, but Scarlet Fever? I didn't think it was still around, when we had it as kids they quarantined us for a long time, because it was so contagious. Thank Goodness, they have new and better medicine now.

Karen
2/3/04

Tristen, you poor girl -- hope you are feeling better soon!! I bet that new bed will help you get better.
I never heard of a kid getting scarlet fever anymore -- weird.

Amanda
2/3/04
I just looked at the UNL webcam, and in front of the student union they plowed a strip of sidewalk and the students look like ants all in a row walking in the line. Check it out between classes.

When the sun/shadows are just right, you can see that in the lower right, someone has spelled out "I (heart) U" in the snow. --Gary

Tristen is home sick today, and probably tomorrow, if not half a day. I took her to the doctor just now and she has strep throat with scarlet fever. We just got home and gave her her first dose of Zithromax and some tylenol. We stopped and got chicken noodle soup for lunch. They offered to do a culture on Teghan if we wanted to bring her in. Tristen must have it pretty bad, since when she opened her mouth for the doctor she said, "whoa, yea, this is strep all right" as she backed away. That can't be good. She has a rash all over her chest and neck too, that's the scarlet fever I guess. Anyhow, thats our news here for the day!

Get well soon, Tristen!

I just finished taking Zithromax myself! --Gary

So, the "official" groundhog (Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania) did see his shadow yesterday, which means we've got six more weeks of winter coming at us. A groundhog here in Lincoln would not have seen his shadow at sunrise yesterday -- meaning an early spring -- though by mid-morning it was a bright sunny day. Yeah, go ahead and laugh; but I'm sure the groundhog forecast is just as reliable as the meteorological one. :-)

2/2/04

Hey everybody! We got a lot of snow too, about 6 inches, but we already had today off beacuse of some teacher inservice or something, so we didnt get a snow day, but mom did have to go in, and Erika went with her.
Tristen, your room looks really nice!

Grandma

LOVE your room Tristen! That is one of the coolest beds we've ever seen! Can't wait to see it in person. You need to write in here on the newsletter yourself and tell us how you like your new room!

A projects update from Texas!

Lindsey
2/2/04

Yea LPS waited long enough to put it on the TV because it didn't say it was cancelled on TV until at least after 6:30 and I would've actually gone to school not knowing that we it was cancelled but I had a dentist appointment (which was also cancelled) so I waited and my Mom went to pick up the other people in the car pool and she said nobody was coming out of the house and when somebody saw her in the driveway they said that LPS had cancelled so I don't know that's weird that LPS didn't put anything on until like 7:30 or whatever.

Donna
2/2/04

Another snow day for me! No school for Lincoln either. Congrats Lindsey and Olivia! I don't know why LPS waited so long to decide. All other schools had cancelled last night. I heard we have about 6 inches so far with maybe another inch or two expected. That makes almost 2 feet of snow in the last week and another big storm expected Wednesday. Unbelievable! I am starting to hate snow.

Amanda

I see no school for Lincolnites, again! You are too lucky! On Monday's no less! Enjoy enjoy!

Gary

So it's a snow day tomorrow in Omaha and many surrounding towns, but as of now (11 pm Sunday) school is still on for Lincoln (and the U of N). This has been a beautiful snowy weekend -- a classic snowfall started last evening (on top of the foot of snow we've still got from last week), and it snowed pretty much all day today. Very nice! I think it's supposed to continue off and on through tomorrow, so the groundhog will probably not see his shadow tomorrow morning -- which means an early spring!

Lindsey
2/1/04
Been snowing most of the day here and there's no wind so it's all falling down. We have probably got about 3 inches and it's still snowing so not sure how much we will get. We were on our way home from the grocery store and it was SLICK even in Dad's truck so we will see how it turns out tomorrow. Just got finished watching one of the new movies we bought which was Captain Ron and hadn't seen that one in a while so that was fun to watch on a cold night. Alright talk to everyone later.
