Last full day of the Minnesota Visitation! First off was an early morning gardening project: Grandma and Marsha built a low retaining wall against the west side of the garage with some blocks they got yesterday at Menards. In the afternoon we all went to Eyes of the World, then next door to Open Harvest, and then across town to Sugar Plum for more candy. At 4, Sam and Anna and I went to pick up Lindsey and Olivia, and our next stop was Toys R Us. Back to Grandma's for some Valentino's pizza; and then TV and Facts in Five in the evening. Thanks for driving down here, you guys -- safe trip back and let's do it again soon!

I'm done with American Idol. It's a sham. The best 3 were voted in as the bottom three? What a rip. (Gary did you get my posting this morning about our guess as to who was out for AI? I sent it before 6)

Yeah, those three were the bottom choices??? Something verrrry fishy here. PenBoy is too dumb to get it, but it was written all over John Steven's face: "Why those three and not me?" Anyway, Amanda: no, I didn't get your posting. I checked about 9 am, and again at 10 pm, and saw nothing from you except this note. --Gary

Personally my favorites for American Idol were Jasmine and Fantasia. Pen Guy has got to go!

Kind of a laid-back day today, even though Sam and Anna were early risers: Anna at 10:30 and Sam showed up a little after noon! Grandma, Marsha, and Donna went to Menards and Gary, Sam, and Anna went first to a game store and then to Taco Bell for lunch. A few hours later we went to Barnes & Noble, and from there we picked up Lindsey and Livy after school. (With two stops on the way back to Grandma's: Sugar Plum candy store and PetCo, where Livy -- inspired by Sam's example yesterday -- bought a dog collar and an engraved tag.) Sean arrived at Grandma's soon after, and we were treated to a pot roast dinner with all the trimmings. Then it was American Idol (gotta be Camile who gets the boot tomorrow), games and etc. Another excellent day!

Things didn't get moving until early afternoon today. Sam made her first appearance around 2:30, and Anna -- though she was awake by noon -- needed a bit more couch-time so was not on her feet until about 4. By which time the rest of us had gone to Sam's Club, then over to N. 78th to pick up Lindsey and Livy. Back to Grandma's and, after a short break, a quick trip to PetCo, where the only purchase was made by Sam (for herself): A dog collar plus an engraved tag reading "Samantha / Careful / I Bite." Very cool! It so impressed Livy that she shook Sam's hand and said with a big smile, "Sam, I'm proud of you!" At 7 we loaded up two cars and made our way to Valentino's; but a long line and a long wait turned us away. We decided to take a chance on a Chinese buffet (the New China at about 55th and O) which turned out to be pretty good. Then back to Grandma's for some games and movie watching.

Sounds like you guys are having fun, wish we were there...

So today, while the slumber party-ers were still over at Paul & Lori's, the rest of us (Grandma, Gary, Marsha, Donna) went on a quick shopping trip: first to T. J. Max/Best Buy, then to Gateway....oops, excuse me, renamed "Shoppingtown" by new owners. (Worst...name...EVER.) And as we passed the food court, guess who we saw lounging there with dishes of Dippin' Dots? No, you're wrong; it was Sam, Anna, Lindsey, and Livy. We all eventually made our way back to Grandma's and stayed there the rest of the afternoon (except for Livy who went to soccer practice for an hour). Paul and Lori came over for spaghetti, ravioli, bruschetta, asparagus and later strawberries dipped in chocolate. Another fun day!

Hey everybody! We got home about 7, drove through lots of heavy rain the whole time. We had a fun time! It was nice to see everybody!

Just got back from my dance competition in Omaha with my mom and Anna. We did REALLY good this time. We got the diamond award (first) in our division, then in another division we won our category, and then we got 4th in overall high scores for the competition. So I got a trophy, another ribbon, a pin, and a plaque. Ok well see everyone later!!!!!

Been just a wee bit quiet here on the ol' newsletter page, mostly because the readers/writers in three of our four fair cities have been busy! Marsha, Sam, and Anna arrived in Lincoln yesterday mid-afternoon, and Lindsey and Livy came over for the day. We just hung around the house, eating a great chicken noodle soup that Grandma made, and playing games; and Lindsey and Livy stayed overnight at Grandma's. Today, Lindsey headed for Omaha first thing in the morning for her dance competition, and Anna went along for the ride. The Nelsons arrived around 10:30 at which time we had an excellent breakfast thanks to a breakfast baked-dish that Donna made, and Karen's home-made kolaces. Then Erika handed out Easter baskets to everyone that were full of goodies! After that, Donna took Emily, Erika, Sam, and Livy to her house so they could pay their respects to Mojo (no serious scratches were reported); when they got back we all went to the Mall. All of this in between, and during, downpours by the way.... We had a late afternoon snack and then the Nelsons headed back to SC. An hour or two later we settled down to watch a movie ("Under the Tuscan Sun" -- very good!). About 8:30 or so, Lindsey and Anna arrived with a tale of their adventurous drive back from Omaha through a violent thunderstorm. Scary! Then all the girls packed into Paul's car for a slumber party at Lindsey's downstairs pad. And that's Day One and Day Two!

PC troubles here too. We took it in today to have them fix our DVD drive, and found out that the power supply fan is out. Of course they can't fix it there, so it has to be shipped off somewhere. We took it back home today, and decided that we will take it in on Wednesday the 7th. On Thursday the 8th I go in for my wisdom teeth surgery, so we figure we will be preoccupied with that for a while, and won't be so attached to the computer. It will be bad though, the thought of no computer for a week is scary!!!

AAAaaaaaaggghhh! A whole week....! I managed to fix mine, by the way; turned out to be just a couple of dumb mistakes I was making. Windows XP is now up and running on my system. Looks good! --Gary

We were having computer troubles too. Just got it back and hooked up. So that's why we didn't participate in the game. Looking forward to Saturday. See you all then :)

My computer has been more or less useless for the past three days. Started off innocently enough: I had been wanting to upgrade to Windows XP but was put off by the price -- something less than $200 most places. Then on Monday I had the sudden inspiration to call the computer shop here on the campus to see if they had a price break for staff. And they did. I asked how much, and he said $4.99. I said, "Like, four dollars and ninety-nine cents 499??" Yup. So I got it. So the price was right, but installing it has been unpleasant. The whole first night was one long frustrating affair, which turned out to be a bad CD! So I exchanged it the next day, and installed XP that night. But now 1) Windows doesn't recognize my video card or my monitor, so the display is pretty crappy; 2) Windows doesn't recognize my microphone input; 3) when downloading the XP updates from the Microsoft site(!) I somehow caught the MSBlaster virus, which now every time my virus checker cleans it out it magically re-appears (8 or 9 times so far!). It's still not running, and unless I am guided by the computer gods tonight and manage to fix everything I'll have to take it to the shop....

Anyway, see y'all tomorrow! :-) --Gary

Thanks for playing the photo game, Lindsey! You were the clear winner as no one else even mentioned it. You can't all be having computer trouble, can you? (Like me! But more on that later....)

Anyone who does not yet own the classic computer game "Rollercoaster Tycoon," your moment has arrived: The game is included free in boxes of "Golden Graham" cereal right now.

Not sure what the release date is, but the movie "Troy" is coming out soon (stars Brad Pitt, Orlando Bloom, and Sean Bean). Here's the website where you can watch the very cool trailer.

Thanks to everyone who ordered! Cookies are finally over for this troop! We sold 3,303 boxes as a troop and Tristen was the top seller with 603! We met our goal of 1,000, which was a trip to Chuck E Cheese, but didn't quite make it to the 5,000 level for the food fight. We are going tomorrow to deliver the Gift of Caring cookies, of which our troop is donating 77 boxes! We really had a great experience and learned lots. Thanks again to everyone who helped Tristen!!

Okay, who gets cut? The three weakest, in my humble opinion: Camile, Jennifer, and John. And I think it's going to be Camile. The tribe has spoken.

The three best performances: LaToya by far, then Amy, and then Fantasia.

I want Pencil Boy and Matt "Hair Club For Men" Rogers to go far, far away and never ever do anything relating to music again. But that probably won't happen.

SPRING BREAK FOR ME!!!!!!!!

Amanda
3/19/04
Nice here too. 80 at 1 PM. Yesterday we had to turn on the A/C for an hour or so to get it to cool down to a decent temp, it was 86 in the house. We have 3 days left of cookies sales. I can't wait for it to be over! Tristen & I are working at a booth tonight from 5-7, it should be busy, we should sell about 150 boxes. Whatever we sell Tristen will get half the credit. She is at 457, so the shower radio is hers! Working towards 500, a flower pillow. Steph is here right now, so the cookies will be heading to Nebraska in 3 days!! Our spring break is almost over and it went WAY too fast.

No newsletters lately. Guess no one can top Donna's story about Britney Spears. Nice and warm today -- 60's -- hard to believe it was a blizzard just 4 days ago. Most of the snow has melted away.
Donna
3/17/04
On the way home from work yesterday, our bus driver tells us to look at the vehicle driving in the next lane. He said Britney Spears was in the back seat. Britney Spears manager called our bus company to rent a vehicle while she's in Omaha (she's performing tonight) and the bus driver recognized the vechicle. She had rented a theater last night, but our driver didn't know what movie she was going to see. I called Tristen last night--thinking she'd be excited to hear I actually saw Britney Spears. But instead she tells me, "Well you know Donna, I don't like Britney Spears any more. Her music isn't appropriate for kids and she says bad words in her songs."
Then Erika calls me later and I tell her. But she wouldn't believe me. Her quote: "I know you're making this up." So much for my big story.
Donna
3/17/04
Yep, I'm betting Leah gets the ax tonight. Too bad because she was much better than Pencil Boy. How could Simon call him the dark horse that just may win? Jasmine and Fantasia were by far the top singers last night.
Karen
3/17/04
Happy St Patrick's Day!

Gary -- I can't believe you missed the corned beef and cabbage. We aren't having that tonight. None of us were too excited about it.
We certainly aren't very "springy" around here. Still have about 15 inches of snow on the ground, and maybe more to come this afternoon. Looks like most of it should be melted by the week-end though....
Amanda
3/17/04
Not only will we have corned beef at 6, but right now at 11 it is 73 degrees, looking for a high near 80. Ahh, spring...Spring is about the only thing I like about Texas.
Amanda
3/17/04
I didn't get to watch it last night as I had a meeting, but Tristen and Ryan say buh-bye to Bulgaria girl Leah.
Gary
3/17/04
So, who gets cut tonight?? John Peter "Pencil Boy" Lewis and Matt Rogers are really smelling up the place, but I predict it will be Leah LaBelle. Does Pencil Boy remind anyone else of Elaine dancing on Seinfeld?? :-) And if Matt Rogers is 25, then I'm a leprechaun; I want to see his birth certificate....
Ryan, Amanda, Tristen & Teghan

Happy St. Patricks Day!

Gary, our corned beef just went in the crock pot this morning at about 8, we will be eating about 6 tonight, if you get on the road now you may be able to eat with us. And remember, cookies for dessert! :)

Dang! I've got a meeting at 9:30, couldn't get on the road til 11 or so. Would you mind waiting dinner til, say, 9 pm...? This has really bummed me out -- feels like I slept through Christmas or something. I'm going to have to find an Irish restaurant tonight.... --Gary

3/16/04
GARY, WHERE ARE YOU? We have Corn Beef and Cabbage. And its soooooo good.

I can't believe I missed CB&C night! I'm sure we discussed this and agreed to have it Wednesday night, not Tuesday. I mean, the countdown thing for a week has been pointing to Wednesday night -- all day today it said "tomorrow"!! Note that nobody called me until after dinner (which for me was some wilted leftover salad, a bowl of split pea soup, and a black cherry cola). I wuz robbed....! --Gary

3/16/04
Happy St.Patricks Day everyone!!!!

Thanks you guys and I really like track so far & it a good thing that im in shape from basketball! Pete needs a chaperone because his parents have to leave or whatever they need someone to stay with him. And they just asked if I would kinda babysit. No it wont cut into my time there I probly come down at the end of that month or the begining. Well Ill see you soon :)

It is really snowing here in Omaha. What's it doing in Lincoln?

Over the noon hour it was snowing heavily with big flakes, but it all melted as soon as it touched the ground -- no build-up at all. Now just getting the occasional flake or two. --Gary

Donna
3/16/04
Erika, you look like you're getting swallowed up in all that snow. I can't believe you had to go to school today. No fair.

I would love to place a chocolate bunny order with you, how do I do it?

Anna, why does Pete need a chaperone? And will this trip cut into your Lincoln time?

Karen
3/16/04
I'll try to answer for Emily. It was one of her teachers -- I think she had him for study hall. Not really sure what happened to him. Emily said they had a sub for awhile in his classes because he was in the hospital. Then he had a heart attack -- he was only 40. He was a coach and lots of the kids and teachers will probably go to funeral so they are letting them out early to go....
Grandma
3/16/04
Only one snow day? One thing about snow this time of the year, it is great for playing! Looks like you guys are having fun. I didn't think the swing looked as inviting as it usually does. Congratulations, Anna you had a GOOD day. Bet you and Pete will have a ball in Florida! Track sounds fun besides all the exercise outside and a great job winning city tournament! Why did your teacher pass away, Emily?

Happy St. Pat's Day!!
Karen
3/16/04
Well, mostly back to normal today. School is on time (but Emily does get out at 12:30 for the funeral). Roads aren't too bad. We ended up with over 18 inches -- the heavest snowfall in 24 hours since 1913!!
Anna -- congratualations on your basketball tourney. We are so jealousy of your trip -- how lucky!!

Well, so much for my front page! :-) I would've sworn you guys would get a snowday today... --Gary

A quick word about today's cool site that Donna found. The webcam (click on "launch crane cam" in the upper right) requires that you have RealPlayer installed. If you don't already have it, there's a link right there to download it.

Also, tonight "American Idol" starts at 7 and goes for two hours -- which means (not counting the 1 hour and 40 minutes of commercials) 20 minutes of actual show time!

Gary
3/15/04
Sioux City snow!
Anna
3/15/04
Hey everyone! I know I havent written for a long time but I finally have news. Well anyway over this week I had a lot of good things happen starting with my basketball team. Well I played for the park board and we only lost 1 game out of 10, so we got ot go to championships and won the championship game and got 1st place!!!
2nd. On sunday I found out that Pete (our neighbor) and his family are going to Florida and DisneyWorld in June. They said the need a chaperone for Pete and asked if I could go with. So I of course took up the offer! Im going to Florida!! Im so happy!
3rd today I started track. I am doing track for my High school and now everyday after school I have track practice from 3:30-5:00. I am gonna be doing the 40 yrd dash or maybe longer Im not sure. My first meet is right after spring break so its a good thing Im in shape from basketball because my coaches are tough. But I really like it so far. Well thats all I know for now and we'll be seeing some of you guys soon! and you guys in Iowa NO FAIR!!!! We have had NO snow days but I hope you guys had fun.
Emily
3/15/04
Well the snow has let up a little, but its still coming down. We've gone out to shovel 4 times, but you cant even tell!! We took a bunch of pictures, and we're working on getting them up, should have them later today or tomorrow.
The rain is nice, but it doesnt get you out of school! :)
Amanda
3/15/04
Any pictures of the snow????

The Sioux City webcam has been down all day I think, and now it is showing the inside of a stadium.

I looked for another SC cam for a possible look at the snow, but couldn't find any. --Gary

Lindsey
3/15/04
I just looked outside and it is starting to snow!!!!! If it's enough for a snow day that's great, but if it's just going to get everything dirty, I don't want it!
Lindsey
3/15/04
Glad we're not getting the snow, I'm sick of it but loving the rain. An inch already Grandma? I didn't think it was raining that much! I hope we don't get the snow!
Karen
3/15/04
Snow is beginning to let up (at 3 pm). I am guessing we have about 20 inches by now. Hopefully that will be all for awhile. The snow plows just went through the street. Brent came home at noon and said he had no trouble getting home. Went back for the afternoon. Emily and Erika are about to go out and try to shovel some of the snow.
Uh, Donna -- are your plumbing and phone troubles connected??
Grandma
3/15/04
Wow, what a snowstorm!! Must say I am happy it didn't get this far, picking up a nice rain tho. Seems to be about an inch in my gauge. Haven't ventured out to check it closely. Brent may be stuck at City Hall. That is a bunch of snow to move through especially when it is wet and heavy. Hope it stops soon...
Donna
3/15/04
Well, I didn't go in to work today and now I'm glad I stayed home. I had to call the plumber. I was working online this morning when I lost connection. Finally figured out my phone line wasn't working. I checked my neighbors and hers was out too. So I drive over to Mom's so I can report the problem and then race back before the plumber got here. Stupid windstream. I was without a phone for 5 hours. And I wonder if it's really fixed. The phone line still sounded staticky.
But about the weather--it's still snowing in Omaha. Someone at work said they saw my bus pulled over on the interstate this AM. And there were a lot of cars that had slid off the road from Waverly on into Omaha. But still just rain here, thank heavens. I can't believe SC is getting so much snow. Better you than us.
Emily
3/15/04

We're now up to about 19-20 inches of snow!!! Everything is closed or canceled. They canceled my Mayors Youth Commission meeting AGAIN, the first meeting I had got canceled because of the snow, so the second one became the first one, and it was just an introduction thing, and todays is canceled too, so we havent hardly even had a meeting yet!!
But we're hoping for a late start tomorrow, and the funeral for my teacher was moved to tomorrow so a late start would give me the whole day off.
Karen
3/15/04

Weather update..... We now (as of noon) have 18 inches of snow and more coming down!! This is even more than our last big storm. Everything is closed, except for City Hall. Brent went in on time this morning -- may have some trouble getting home though. He did leave he truck at home and took the Santa Fe (car not the train).

Wowza! Big storm! Not a flake here: just on-and-off sleety rain. Weather.com reports that in Sioux City "18 inches of new snow has fallen... With another 3 to 6 inches of new snow expected. Travel is discouraged across the I-29 corridor from Sioux City to Elk Point with numerous cars in the ditch." Stay inside, y'all! --Gary

Emily
3/15/04

Yay!! School is canceled, we already have about 10-11 inches and its still coming down!
Karen
3/15/04
Yipee!! Snow day!! Rather surprised me, yesterday was very nice. Woke up this morning to about 6 inches of snow and more coming down. It's now a two hour late start -- which means no preschool. Emily will have the whole day off too. She was already to have a two hour early dismissal, due to a funeral for one of the teachers.

When I opened the door this morning to go to work, we were getting a nice spring rain. I even saw two robins hopping around in the yard. Ten minutes later, getting out of my car at work, we were in the middle of a sleet storm -- little tiny hailstones bouncing off my umbrella. I just heard Omaha could get up to 10 inches of snow.... Donna...? --Gary

OK, windstream has managed to restore everything (at 9 am) to the pre-Saturday-crash state. I have updated the pages that needed updating after that. So it looks like everything is back to normal....
Amanda
3/14/04
Really though, what is the deal with windstream, this is happening a lot lately. I guess windstream really was in the purchase just for the cellular. You can tell they don't care about anything else.

Yeah, on the consumer end all it has been is higher bills and crappy service. By the way, my email seems to be working now, so everybody feel free to send in newsletter items, etc. --Gary

Gary
3/14/04
Wow, a major crash on Saturday -- all windstream's fault, though I don't yet know what happened. All I do know is it completely erased everything on our site. I have restored some pages from here at home (although some of them -- like Projects, for example -- are outdated), but the real restoration will have to wait til tomorrow as the most current backups are on my office computer. Nothing has been lost, but it may take a while before everything is back to normal. (It will be several hours work to rebuild the site completely.) In the meantime, if you do happen to click on a link that has not been restored yet, you'll get a generic windstream search page ("incredifind" or something). Thanks for the great service, windstream!! :-(

P.S. Just discovered my email isn't working either, so if you send in a newsletter item, it may be a while before I can access it and add it to this page....

Hi I am selling chocolate and white chocolate rabbits 5 $s a peice it is 6 oz. of SOLID chocolate. Someone bought 60 $s worth of rabbits thats 12 rabbits.

OK, you all know my position on Republicans -- that they are irrational at best, and at worst criminals and liars -- but if you have any lingering doubts, listen to what I just heard on CNN. On the market report, the interviewer asked a Republican commentator (didn't catch the name) to explain why the markets took a dip this week in spite of the administration painting a picture of rosy economic health. His answer? He believed the markets fell because "people were afraid John Kerry might become President." :-0 That's a new one...! Usually they blame it on Clinton, or Carter....
Ryan

Although Teghan enjoyed the real life Nemo picture today, she had issues with the slab of Nemo in the corned beef count down. Seriously, it looks like a slab of Nemo! Still excited for corned beef though!

I didn't pick any of the "winners" on this week's Idol show either. If I could not look at George I wouldn't mind his voice, but his mannerisms look so fakey to me.
Update on Penny--she is now going up and down the steps and cavorting around the backyard like a teenager, I hope it doesn't prove to be a short term thing. On a much unhappier note, Ron is going to hospital Monday to have a kidney removed, had an MRI last week and they found a cancerous cyst. He is a positive thinker but understandably depressed. Don't have many details as to when the surgery will happen.
Spring is kind of happening, I have lots of green stuff already, tulips and daffodils etc. They may suffer a setback tonight. Ordered some mulch this morning so wheelbarrows, shovels and strong backs welcome. Ryan, can we expect you for Tues. Corned Beef and Cabbage?
Waiting for the plumber. Anxious for the Hadgidakis visit. Emily, sounds like you have a full plate, hope you get on the cheerleading squad. Linz, Congratulations on the Dance competition! Anna, how about the BB tournament? Did you bring home the trophy?
Gary
3/11/04
To further obsess about American Idol, here are a couple of interesting write-ups: A re-cap of Tuesday's show, and a re-cap of Wednesday's show. (Recaps of all previous shows here.) And I also read an intriguing comment somewhere from a fan of the show who confessed that some people are voting in Pencil Boy (or "Penboi" as they called him) as a form of protest: They're mad about some of the really talented people the judges have already cut, so they plan to vote Pencil Boy all the way through -- hoping the judges will be "stuck with him" at the end. Could be...?
Donna
3/11/04
Argh, I forgot to watch AI last night! How could George Huff and Pencil boy win? They don't have any talent at all!
I think we should have an American Idol contest. We should pick who we think will win now or after next week's show. I don't know how to really make it more of a game than that but it would be fun to do since we're all watching.

The quick and easy way would simply be for each of us to post our predictions after Tuesday's show and before Wednesday's show. FWIW, I pre-picked three out of last night's four; but Pencil Boy was totally not in my cards. By the way, he did only get 22% of the votes phoned in, which means the voting must have been pretty spread out. Conceivably he won by only a few percentage points. ...Which makes me wonder what kind of "security" measures they have in place? I presume you can call in as often as you want; so what prevents some demented Pencil Boy fan from calling in over and over, all day long? --Gary

Amanda

I hear ya! I'm protesting! No Suzy???? I didn't like how they did the judges picks either, that should have been after America's choice. I'm wondering if the judges knew who got picked. And if they did, why didn't one judge vote in Suzy?

The judges had to know in advance who got picked by the voters, didn't they? Otherwise there could be an awkward moment if they chose someone who would later be "America's choice." The whole thing smelled kinda funny to me. Any selection process which chose that geek over the rightful winner(s) is very suspect -- just like the Florida election results. --Gary

When that little weasel from Texas stole the election three years ago, I thought I'd seen it all. And then I saw John Peter Lewis win out over Susan Vulaca.... ??????

Hey everybody. My school is sponsoring an NAIA team too, we're sponsoring Bryan College, from Bryan, Tennessee. But we dont get out of school to go see them.
I liked Katie Webber on American Idol, I didnt think any of the guys were that great either.
Thanks to Tristen for the cookies!!

That's a great idea for out-of-town teams who couldn't bring along their usual fans. ...Wonder if that idea would fly for Big Red games....? Probably not... --Gary

Oh, and to the Lincolnites with cookies, expect yours soon. Steph is coming down in a week and will bring them all back then, thank goodness, we would have spent a fortune mailing them, we have 12+ boxes to send with her!
Amanda

MMM... Panera Bread, I miss it. And to finish it off with Girl Scout cookies, how great! That was quick too, Priority Mail is worth it. For under a dollar more they actually cared that my package got delivered in a timely manner.

I just had a delicious lunch, baked potato soup in a bread bowl. A new Panera Bread opened. Erika and her class got to go to a basketball game in school today. The NAIA tournament is in town. Her class is sponsoring a team and they went to cheer them on. Should have been a fun morning for her. Got a box of cookies delivered this morning. Thanks Tristen!!

Sponsoring an out-of-town team; what a cool idea! --Gary

I liked Suzy too. But I liked Jennifer Hudson too. They were definitely the best. Pencil boy? Uh, I don't think so. In fact none of the guys are that great.
So who is Tristen rooting for? I sure wish I could watch American Idol with her.
And hey Ryan, it's almost corned beef and cabbage time.

I meant it in the sense that the effect he could have on McDonald's is the complete opposite of the effect Jared had on Subway. Which only shows once again that Subway should be showering money on this Jared guy....

One more little wrinkle about Martha Stewart. I heard that this entire stock deal of hers was for a total of $51,000. She committed four felonies trying to prevent losing 51k.... Now, Martha is a billionaire. My calculator just showed me that if she put one billion dollars in a box (a box tastefully appliqued with dried flowers) under her bed -- i.e., forget about interest -- she could have spent $51,000 every day for the next 54 years before the box was empty. Sheesh!

Donna
3/9/04
He's not really the anti-Jared. A few years ago he heard on the news that some people were trying to sue McDonald's for making them fat. McDonald's response was that there was nothing wrong with their food and this guy decided to see if that was true. So everything he ate and drank (including water) came from McDonald's. Even though the diet made him sick, his cravings for it increased. And he gained almost a pound a day! Disgusting. But why does it have to taste so good?
Donna
3/9/04
You've probably heard by now that McDonald's is taking 'super size' off their menu's, but have you heard why? This guy in NY decided to eat only McDonald's for 30 days. He gained 25 pounds in a month, his liver became toxic, skin blotchy, etc. He was healthy before this and did it all under doctor supervision. His rule was he had to eat everything on the menu at least once and would only eat supersize when they offered it to him.
He's made a movie about it that will be out in May. McDonald's says the movie has nothing to do with their decision to stop supersizing--that it's in part due to giving better/faster service to customers by having less buttons to push on the register. If you want to read more about it, you can go to his website: supersizeme.com.

Ouch! He's the Anti-Jared! --Gary

Lindsey, the CD thing has been over for months. I had totally forgotten about it, it was so long ago. So you can't sign up for it any more. And also, it didn't matter how many CDs you had bought in that time -- everyone got the same amount: $13.86. Sorry!

On Martha Stewart: I was wrong in my note below. I have since heard that the maximum sentence per count is five years, so if she were to get the maximum (which she won't) it would be 20 years in prison and a one million dollar fine. The legal experts I heard on CNN just now are saying she will very likely get some jail time; but it will be more like 12-18 months. They also said the length of the sentence is very dependent on how much responsibility you take for what you did, or how repentent you are. Which would explain, they said, why the words "I know I did nothing wrong!" suddenly disappeared from Martha's website yesterday. :-)

Ok I still wanna know where you can get this CD money back because I could get a pretty good check! Anyways, not much going on here. Hope Tristen had fun at her birthday party. Been really nice today here! I was outside for a little bit with Olivia. I hope the nice weather stays!

Woo-hoo! New Line Cinema announced today that the "Return of the King" DVD release date has been moved up about three months -- from sometime in August to May 25. Only 78 days away! :-) (Countdown page has been adjusted.) The 5-hour Extended Version is still scheduled for a November release.

Hey everybody! Well, I haven't been on the webpage for a while, a lots been going on! I've been pretty busy with cheerleading, we had kind of try-outs all week after school, they taught us a regular cheer and then a wrestling cheer, and we have to make up our own, and we were just working on all that all week. On monday we have try-outs until 6!! Long day, but its fun.
I got my CD money a few days ago too. We went shopping yesterday, I wanted to get one of those initial purses, but nobody has any with an E!!
Anyways Hope Tristen is feeling better & Congratulations to Donna and Lindsey!
Amanda

Congrats again Lindsey! Ryan is out mowing today, it is 55 already at 10:30. Tristen has a birthday party to go to today, a skating party. We are going to try to sell some cookies door to door. Other than that, we don't know much, just trying to make the weekends around here a little more exciting! How was School of Rock?

Funny you should ask! See the reviews page. --Gary

Hey everybody! I had another competition today and we got Top First! I also sent in pictures, but our team is on a winning streak so hopefully we can keep it going! We have another competition this month and another next month and then the recital in June which there I'll be in 3 dances because my point class isn't doing a dance for the recital. But I'm happy we got Top First!
Amanda

Four convictions, felony convictions, and the maximum is 10 years? What are they each 2 years a piece? Even if she does get 10 years she will be out in 6 months on good behavior, technicality, anything, just to push her on through. Out to sell more failing stocks...

That was the way I heard it: For each count the maximum penalty is two (or three?) years and $250,000. I was amazed she got convicted at all; now I'll be amazed if she pays a fraction of that penalty. --Gary

Samantha
3/5/04
NO!!!!!!!!!!!!! They can't send Martha Stewart to jail; she is my hero! :(

Crime doesn't pay, Sam! They got her. It's the pen, the pokey, the hoosegow, the slammer, the big house, the Graybar Hotel. But not to worry: The maximum sentence she can get for this crime is 10 years in jail and a $1 million fine.... --Gary

Where is the website that you can fill out for the CD thing because I didn't know about it either.

Well, I just combed back through the old newsletters and couldn't find it anywhere. I could have sworn John sent in a note to the newsletter about it... Maybe it was an email to everyone? I don't think so. Anyway, it was many months ago so I'm sure the sign-up phase --unfortunately! -- is long over. --Gary

Gary

Wow! Martha Stewart guilty on all four counts!
Amanda
3/5/04
What's the CD thing??

I was going to look this up, but haven't gotten around to it yet. It's on some previous month's newsletter here. I think John sent it in (correct me if I'm wrong). Back then a class action lawsuit had just been settled that declared the music CD industry had been systematically overcharging people for CDs for years. The settlement was, anyone who had purchased any music CD between (I'm making these numbers up) 1990 and 1998 was entitled to a share. And anyone who filled out the form on their website would get a share -- no proof of purchase necessary. I really didn't expect anything to happen [see my rebate experience below!], but I was wrong! --Gary

Gary
3/5/04
Yes, I took part in the great CD class action suit. And sure enough, just last week I got a check for $13.86. Nice surprise, as I had totally forgotten about it. On the other side of the coin, several weeks ago I bought a little memory stick at Best Buy: 50 bucks but with a $30 rebate. I carefully filled out the rebate form and sent it in. Today I received a card from them saying they "could not honor" my request as I had "already submitted the maximum number of rebate claims per household." Huh?? It's just me here, guys.... Lousy cheaters!!

Tristen - Get Better Soon :)

I was watching the weather channel yesterday and saw that Texas was getting hit hard -- I wondered how close it was to you guys. We missed the big snow last night. All day long they were predecting up to 6 inches and wind. (So I was thinking "snow day.") But no such luck -- temp stayed over 35 and it was just rain. Actually melted all the snow and it's beginning to turn green in a few places. Hey, did anyone else send in the CD ligation refund? Can't remember when we did it -- must have been last summer. Well Emily sent hers in and she got a check this week $13.86. We were thinking maybe $5.00 -- so we are going shopping this weekend.

Tristen has strep throat again, and an ear infection. Back on antibiotics. She doesn't feel as bad as she did last time thankfully. She missed a day of school in the deal though. We got cookies tonight. 200 cases in our garage. Hopefully about 1/2 will be gone by tomorrow night. I think Ryan's sister Steph will be making a trip down here in less than two weeks and she will bring all the Lincoln cookies back to Lincoln. If you haven't mailed your check yet, do so, pony express remember! :) We had a bad storm today. Tornado touched down and ripped through a town not far from here. I was in the middle of a test. The English Usage Exam, a test all people hoping to graduate from Texas universities has to take. It was a 300-500 word essay. You can only take it once, if you fail you have to take ANOTHER composition class. If you got up and left the test (to go to the bathroom or get a drink) you were done, and I had to go to the bathroom, so I was glad for the tornado warning. We had to go in the halls for 20 minutes. Anyhow. One week left, then spring break, cant wait!! I need the break, and unfortunately it will go WAY too fast. I hope windstream doesn't mess up again and lose this newsletter like the one I wrote right before the newsletter crashed yesterday.

"I Hate Bush #3,486"
With Kerry assured of the nomination now, Bush has started campaigning. And his very first TV ad was sleazy enough to draw criticism even from some Republicans. Here's a story on it.

Donna asked me a question yesterday about the Oscar standings which got me thinking about my statistical methodology...which means, it turns out, I had been doing my math wrong. To get the overall standings (which is our over-all accuracy at picking Oscar winners over the years), I had been averaging the averages when I should have been re-computing a new average each year. On Monday I posted the current averages this way:

65% Donna
61% Gary
57% John
56% Amanda
53% Grandma
50% Marsha
50% Sean
49% Ryan
etc.

when really they should be like this:

56% Donna/Gary
51% John
50% Sean
49% Amanda/Marsha
47% Grandma
44% Zachary
etc.

The percentages are somewhat lower than they were, and the ranking has changed a little. Note the tie for first place (Donna and I have both made 83 correct predictions out of 148 total tries) and a tie for fourth place (Amanda and Marsha have each made 72 correct predictions out of 148 tries). Sean's "average" of 50% is based on this year only (this is the first year he played!).

All the Oscar standings have been re-computed, so take a look if you want. Yeah, I know, it's not a big deal. Unless we were playing this for money!

I'm sure most of you noticed the problem with this webpage yesterday. It was an windstream problem -- nothing to do with me or this site. The webpage couldn't be accessed for most of the afternoon and evening; and when it finally came back online later in the evening, I discovered that the newsletter page had been erased. Very mysterious, and I'm still trying to get an answer as to what happened. I do have backups, but the most current backup was on my office computer, which meant I couldn't restore the page until this morning. Anyway, sorry about the delay in service -- send your complaints to windstream, not me. :-)

On another subject, it has been really cold here the past couple of days. The temps have been in the upper 30s, but it feels much colder. Kind of like the cold in San Francisco, which prompted the most famous quote Mark Twain never said: "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco." But! In spite of the cold, for the past two mornings I have been awakened before the alarm went off by birds singing outside my window. Spring might be happening...?

Snow again for us today. Started last night and we have about two inches now. Heavy and wet and still coming down. We had just gotten rid of the last of the snow on Saturday, so the ground is covered again. Emily got her glasses Monday -- look nice on her and she can see now! She is going to Cheerleader practice all week. Try-outs are on Monday -- so we'll let you know if she is picked.
Hope Tristen and Ryan are feeling better -- Brent had the same thing Ryan had. He couldn't talk for about 4 days. Takes a long time to get over it.
Congratulations to Donna and Lindsey. Hey, Lindsey where were you guys last week-end? We missed you.....

Way to go Donna and Lindsey! LOTR won three years worth of Oscars on Sunday, very well deserved. We just went to the caucus, over 150 people turned out for our ward, 92 votes for Kerry. It was fun and interesting, I had never been to a caucus before.
Lindsey

Congratulations Donna!

Get Better Tristen!

Wish you guys could be here for Spring Break too!

Amanda
3/2/04
We watched American Idol last night. William Hung wasn't as good. Or should I say he was good, or at least better than his unscripted audition. We weren't as impressed, so we will just watch the audition footage. Tristen has another lump in her throat, so I made another doctors appointment for her for in the morning. Ryan has been sick for a week, the worst of it that he has no voice, and in his line of work that's a problem. Anyhow, it's always something. Tristen and I have this week to finish and next week, then a week off for spring break! Can't wait, if only we make it there.

I agree, though I did like the fact that, out of all the people who have auditioned and are trying out every week, he has been offered a recording contract! And when he was asked what kind of career he wants to move into, he said, "Well, if my recording career doesn't work out..." :-) For something that could have been highly embarrassing (remember that Star Wars kid who had to change schools, etc?), this has been really positive for him. --Gary

P.S. Get well everybody. Take drugs!

Donna
3/2/04
Congratulations Lindsey! It will be an honor sharing Oscar with you this year. LOTR made it easy for me--I just voted for everything they were nominated for. I sure didn't think they'd win all 11 though. I felt sorry for Bill Murray. He looked so sad when he watched Sean Penn walk on stage. I wish he would have won.
Amanda

Congrats girls. What is everyone going to vote on next year, with no LOTR? Everything will be askew....

Okay, complete Oscar scores on the Oscars page. Sam, you're going to have to let go of the trophy and send it down here.... :-)
