Happy May Day! I used to love May Day with the baskets and the sneaking! We are having our garage sale on May Day. We got it all gathered tonight, we had a LOT more than we ever thought. I hope it ALL goes! I'm sure that won't happen, but one can dream, right? I think we may have overpriced, but its our first time! Live and learn, we will see!!

Hey everybody! Its been pretty quiet on here lately. Not much has been going on here either. I went on my fishing trip for biology on tuesday, it was fun but I got really sunburned. Erika is having her slumber party tomorrow, and I have my first dance squad practice.
Happy May Day Everyone!

John's off American Idol! Although I think he would be good on like Broadway or something.

Do you want to know what I find very annoying about the "slower simpler" life here in Texas? The idea of "out to lunch." Most offices close for an hour or an hour and a half at the noon hour. Come on people, we are in the 21st century. Have one person take a lunch at 11, back at 12 and then the other person goes. How backwards is this? It is a big source of frustration for me. I get out of class at 11:50 and try to get things done before 2:30 when I go get Tristen and this lunchtime notion makes it near impossble sometimes. I guess it explains to me why W. went to Camp David every weekend at the height of the war. Texans need their breaks. Give me a break!

I could have told you that Dub was "out to lunch"... --Gary

Hi everybody. Just a heads-up that I will be in meetings almost all day today and this evening, so any newsletter items you send in may not show up right away.... That doesn't mean stop writing; it only means it may be a few hours before your note shows up. Have a good Thursday, people, and a fun party, Erika!

If you go to this link and read the story that is in the top middle, about the Mortar Board you will see my name! You gotta go to the site soon, the headlines change often, sometimes daily as other stuff happens.

Geez, SC is hotter than Texas! No fair, may get in the 90's this afternoon. Started to celebrate Erika's birthday. Went out to eat last night. Brought her a desert with a candle, but didn't sing for her. Lindsey, we enjoyed reading all about your trip, must have been a nice time. Emily had her biology class outside yesterday. Came home pretty sunburned, but had a good time. Didn't catch any fish though. Hope everyone is feeling better.

Amanda, to sour milk, add a tbls vinegar to a cup of milk. The recipe I use is the first one, simpler but the 2nd is a cake and moist and delicious, cream cheese frosting would be a good addition, altho powdered sugar and butter is fine or with a dollop of whipped cream warm from the oven. Instead of sour milk, depending on what I have, sour cream is ok.

Linz. Your "travelogue" was really good. You did see a lot, and sounds like all of it was interesting. I liked that you appreciated the night sky away from city lights. Neat vacation spot. Hope you are feeling better today.

Are Tristen and Teghan feeling better today?

AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ERIKA!! Hope you have a fun party.

Grandma~ Thanks for the recipes. Two questions. What is the one you usually make? And for the top recipe, how do you sour milk? Lemon juice or something?

Here's what happened on our vacation to Fort Robinson. Saw A LOT of stuff in 3 days! Starting out Thursday we got on the road about 7:00pm I would say after dropping Ceaser off at Grandma's. Then we drove until North Platte and got in a swim and then went to bed. Then woke up and drove the rest of the way there and at 2:00 watched an artillery demonstration about the weapons they used during the war and that was really neat. They were actually shooting them off at targets. I got pictures of those to send. Then later we just finished unpacking and then went out to eat in Crawford. Saturday we woke up and went on a really cool jeep ride in the buttes and since we knew the people there we got to make a few extra stops to take pictures and it was so cool! We went all the way to top and practically went out the edge of the buttes and looked over. Got more pictures of that too. Then for lunch we went to a bar in Crawford and played pool and foosball. Then went home and hung around and while my parents friends went to a history thing in Fort Robinson we went out to eat at a really cool restraunt and this lady owned this building with tons of antiques from that time period and there was so much stuff and it was the neatest store (it was above the restraunt). I think at one time it was an old hotel because it had a bunch of rooms that she had stuff in and there was an old elevator that they would bring horses up in. The coolest place to see. Then Sunday we drove up into South Dakota and went through the wind caves, I don't know if anyone had ever heard of them. Here is a site about them. It was really cool and has a long story about it but if you like to see caves this is a really cool one to go through and the guides really know what they are talking about when they are explaining the things in there to you. Then we went and saw the Crazy Horse monument which isn't done but still really neat to see. It will be really cool when it is all done. I also have pictures of both of those. Then we went up to Mount Rushmore and spent the rest of the day there. I have tons of pictures on this but if you ever have the chance to go to Mount Rushmore I would because it is so cool to see and they have a path that you can take to see it and it is just so amazing to see it in person because I had only seen it in pictures and you know I was like "Oh cool" but when you see it in person it just takes your breath away. They also have a museum that tells all the history about it which is really neat! Then they have a huge gift shop and a really good fudge shop! But then we went home and on our way we went through Custer National Park which is just the neatest place to see and guess what, I have pictures! But we climbed on the rocks and stuff and we saw a bunch of animals, especially deer (32 I think at different times) but ones would just walk right across the road and stand next to the road and wouldn't even be scared of the car. But then we went home and Monday woke up and packed and got on the road and we also stopped by Carhenge. I don't know if you've ever heard of it but an artist that lived in England loved stonehenge and came back and with cars actually made a replica of Stonehenge by standing them upright in the ground. We also went by Chimney Rock and sort of saw Jailhouse Rock. But have pictures of Chimney Rock too! But we had a pretty full vacation and Fort Robinson is a great place to go on vacation. Then if you have time drive up to South Dakota and see Mount Rushmore. While we were there this time the horse rides and swimming pool were closed because it wasn't tourist season. But usually you can take a horseride up into the buttes and they have a big indoor swimming pool. We went on this trip with my parents friends because she works at the Nebraska State Historical Society and she had a conference there and we just stayed a long weekend there. Ok well I will try to get pictures soon. Bye!

And I hope you are lots better today, Linz!

Gary
4/27/04
Here's a "get well" for you too, Lindsey!

Lindsey
4/27/04
Get well soon Tristen and Teghan!

I know what you're going through (sort of). I stayed home sick today with a really upset stomach. Yesterday morning I woke up (and we were still in Fort Robinson) and my stomach really hurt and breakfast was ready so I went to eact but didn't eat a whole lot and then wasn't feeling good. But we got everything rounded up and in the car and all car ride I was miserable and didn't eat anything from breakfast Monday to about 11:00 this morning just because nothing sounded good and I was in bed the whole time. Today I ate a little but have been in bed most of the day drinking 7up.

Tristen, looks like you got some neat stuff for your birthday. Yeah, is that barbie thing a palm pilot because Olivia has a scooby doo palm pilot.

I have A LOT of pictures from Fort Robinson and other places that I will get sent in once I'm feeling better.

Karen
4/27/04
Feel better soon, Tristen and Teghan :)

Yup, it's a palm. I have been asking for one forever and my mom and dad finally got me one.
Gary
4/27/04
New photos!

Tristen, in one picture it looks like you are holding a Spongebob Squarepants computer game (and that's what you are playing in the computer picture) -- but what are you holding in the other picture? Is it a Barbie Palm Pilot??? (It looks like Teghan can't wait til she gets her hands on it....!)

P.S.: Get well soon, you two!

Hey, all you fans of "Antiques Roadshow" -- and I know you're out there -- be advised that the show is coming to Omaha on July 10. To get in, you have to bring an item for appraisal, and you must have a ticket. Tickets are free, but are awarded by random drawing and only 2 per household. A little more info here....

Amanda -- the candles are from Home Interiors. Not to advertise, but they are great candles. I've had least three of them over the past few years. They have great scents and burn a long, long time.... Hope you enjoy yours :)
Rainy all day here, and cooler. Spent most of the day cleaning Erika's room. Wish Ryan was here.....
Amanda
4/24/04
I sent in my candle order, can't wait! Is it Home Interiors? I thought I read that at the bottom. If so, I hear they have great candles, better than Partylite (which is who does the in home candle parties). I like also at the bottom how it says, Remember, you never pay shipping! (Except in ...., ......, ....., ...., ....) Anyhow. Ryan is doing some housework today with other people in his squadron. It is called Christmas in April, they went with their own tools and know how and muscle to fix up someone's house who is less fortunate, and can't do it for themselves for whatever reason. He left about 6:30 this morning. They work until they are done today. We watched Haunted Mansion last night, Tristen bought it for herself with birthday money. We got some sprinkles of rain last night from what was supposed to be a flood, but either way it cooled it off, it had been 90's all week last week.
Amanda
4/24/04
Olivia, can you believe this story?
Emily

We're selling these candles for a fundraiser for cheerleading. You can e-mail me with any questions or orders. So if you would like to buy one I'd really appreciate it!!

Another busy, busy week. Erika had a bad week, found out Monday that her old teacher had died -- very unexpected. The funeral was on Tuesday, they all got out early to attend. She really didn't feel comfortable going, so we stayed home. Hit them all hard, had several counselors in the classes to talk about it. She has a concert next Thursday (her birthday!) at school. Singing and playing her flute. So we will have to celebrate her birthday the next day.
Emily didn't have too great of a week either. On Monday a kid in her school got mad and threatened to bomb the school. So he was immediately arrested and expelled for the rest of the year. Tuesday the attendance was very low. Emily did go, but was "escorted" to her locker by police. It was heavily guarded that day. Next Tuesday her biology class is going on a field trip to a campground nearby. They will get to fish and do other experiments. Cheerleading is going well, trying out for Dance Squad too. Lots of practices!!!! Will be a busy summer.

Oh my gosh, how could Jenifer go off AI while John and George are still there??? I wonder if it's fixed. There's no way she deserved to go. But thank heavens it wasn't Fantasia. I think I would have stopped watching if she would have been voted off.

Lindsey--Have a great time at Ft. Robinson!!! Please take pictures if you can.

Yeah, the votes are being skewed somehow. That was very wrong.... --Gary

Well, sometimes people are chatty and sometimes not; that's just the way it goes. Look at some of our earliest newsletters: Sometimes weeks would go by with no items on this page. :-)

Have fun in Fort Robinson, you guys! And remember, if you order Buffalo Wings out there, it might be real buffalo!

Lindsey
4/21/04
I have tried to talk about things on the webpage too and nobody is talking. But we leave tomorrow around 6ish for Fort Robinson.....
Amanda
4/21/04
Come on people. Nothing in 2 days! Who watched AI last night? We didn't, so how was it? Hoping to get to see it tonight.

Yeah, I keep testing my email to see if it's still working! :-) AI was good last night -- all the performers are clearly getting better each week. I was expecting kind of a dull show, with a Barry Manilow theme (I'm not a Fanilow), but it was pretty good. Weakest AI-wannabee? John the red-head. I predict he walks tonight.... --Gary

4/19/04
I'm glad you had a good birthday Tristen! Sounds like fun. So what all did you get for your birthday?
Karen
4/19/04
Stormy last night, had heavy rain and hail. Got about an inch of rain. Much cooler today, record highs in the 90's last week. Sounds like Tristen had a good birthday. Erika is anxiously awaiting hers. Actually Erika had some sad news this week-end. Her third grade teacher died on Friday. Don't imagine she will have school tomorrow, and we will probably go to the funeral. Emily worked at the concession stand for the SC Relays on Saturday morning. Doing fundraising for Cheerleading already. Has a meeting on Wed to find out more details. She also has a meeting tonight for Mayor's Youth Commission.
Amanda
4/19/04
Well, the birthday party week is over. I say week because we had her birthday on Wednesday, then on Friday she had Kennedy come home with us after school to spend the night, Saturday we took Teghan to the daycare from 6-10 PM for "Parents night out" (they do it once a month for $15) and took Tristen to get some dinner and to the mall to spend some of her birthday money and Claire's card. She got some good things! Then Sunday was the skating party. She had 15 or 16 kids come. Ryan skated a lot, Teghan got on a pair, it was a good time. No digital pictures though, sorry. Back to the real world now!! I had the mortar board orientation this past weekend. Didn't learn a whole lot, I hope the induction ceremony next Monday is better. That is about all I know. Oh, I'm pretty much finally feeling back to normal, still a little careful around the "holes" but my last stitch fell out last night, and I had been waiting for that.
Gary
4/17/04
Have a good trip, you guys!

Hey, a few notes down I mentioned that Q&A that Bush botched in last Tuesday's "press conference." Well, if you want to hear it straight from the Commander-in-Thief's own lips, listen to the big jerk himself! (If the video doesn't play for you, here's a transcript.)

Lindsey
4/17/04
Hasn't been much news on the webpage. We are leaving for Fort Robinson on Thursday. We went there last June and had a fun time and we will be there until Monday. Ummm...don't know much other news really.

Congrats to Emily and Amanda!

(That cheerleader graphic is getting a workout this month!)

And for all of you who have written in to say I haven't bad-mouthed Bush enough lately, here you go! :-) Anyone who watched the so-called "press conference" last Tuesday knows that it was heavily scripted. The White House had asked that all questions be submitted in advance, so Bush could rehearse everything and then work from his seating chart to call on which reporter for which question, etc. But he did go off-script once at the end, I understand. (I didn't watch more than a few minutes of it, so I didn't see this -- I'm quoting the story from the newspaper.) When the script ran dry, one journalist asked Bush if he felt regret for missing any one specific part of the 9/11 plot more than others. Bush stumbled on his answer, then "said he wished he had seen the question ahead of time before muttering about not be able to come up with anything under pressure." Later he said "I am confident I made mistakes." What a jerk.

4/15/04
Well, I got it! I found out the other night that I made it into the Mortar Board Honor Society. I have an orientation on Saturday and hope to find out more then. The induction is on the 26th. Lots of good things happening around here!!
Emily
4/15/04
Hey everybody! It is soo nice here today! Erika and I went rollerblading and set up the volleyball net. It was just a month ago we got all our snow!
On Saturday we have to work at the concession stands at the Sioux City relays for cheerleading. We have to be there from 8 to 12:30!
Donna -- I wasn't really on TV, you could see me in the background, but that was about it.
Tristen, how was your birthday? What did you end up doing for your party?
Amanda
4/15/04
We didn't even know AI was on this week!! We didn't even watch! It got pre-empted once and I didn't know when to watch after that! Darn, but at least pen boy is gone.

Hey everybody! I got out of school at 12:30 today for my Mayor's Youth Commission workshops at the Convention Center. We just had a little introduction thing first with everybody til one. My first workshop was Dream Job. We talked about like different kinds of careers and stuff. Then the next workshop I had was Idea Action. We talked about what we didn't like about Sioux City and how they could be changed and other things that could be done to make the city better. They were both really fun. There were alot of TV cameras and reporters there, and I got interviewed in my second workshop. It was a fun day!

Tristen got a birthday card from the Nelson's with money in it, she was very impressed. Her & Teghan got Easter gifts from Grandpa & Grandma & Lindsey & Olivia yesterday, and it had candy, and that impressed Teghan. Tomorrow night we are taking Tristen out to eat at IHOP. Sunday is her skating party. 25 invited, we will see how many come. She may have Kennedy spend the night Friday, she couldn't decide whether to do a slumber party or a skating, so we may sneak in a little slumber party. She deserves it, she was a big help this weekend. I'm still not feeling great, but am back to the real world. Ryan went back to work today and I went back to school. Argh...

I am feeling a bit better. No dry sockets yet, that's my biggest fear. I'm doing everything the doctor said, so I better not get them. We aren't making much today. Just a ham and mashed potatoes, maybe some corn (but from a can, how hard is that), some rolls and Ryan's stovetop stuffing. Boring. Ryan is making it anyway, and I probably won't be able to eat the ham. I tried to eat a cheese quesadilla last night and it killed my jaw. Argh, this better be worth it in the end! We haven't hunted for Easter eggs yet, but they are out there! Tristen just woke up, she went to a swimming birthday party last night then with her friend Kennedy for a few hours to get out of the house of "boring and sick." We will send pictures later!!

Happy Easter Everybody!

Erika and I are on our spring break! We got out early on Wednesday and we go back on Tuesday. But I get out early on Tuesday too for Mayor's Youth Commission, we get to go to the Convention Center and go to these different workshops, it should be fun.
Feel Better Amanda and Anna!! I've had a little cold all week too, not fun.

Happy Easter!

Hope you get well soon Amanda and Anna!

I haven't been feeling well either and it just started last night and I had a sore throat and my nose was stuffed up so I woke up at like 4:30 in the morning and took some cold stuff and went back to sleep until 11:00!!!!!!! Then when I woke up I felt a little better but now I'm still not feeling well so I took a bath and ate some soup so hopefully I can get over this soon. Olivia also has something like this so I think that's where I got it from.

Back to chilly weather for a while, had to put the Red blanket back on last night and slept well because I did. Lilacs are only a week or less from blooming and sure is green and growing here. Update on Ron is good news, he found out yesterday no growth had spread from the kidney, and he seems to be just fine, even may be going home tomorrow. I'm so glad for them. Not much happening at my house, have most of the leaves raked off the flower beds but none anywhere else. I hope you are feeling good, Amanda, and can be done with your "bunny ears." Anna, I hope you are all better by now too.

Happy Easter to you all!
Karen

Happy Easter!

Amanda hope you are feeling better and able to enjoy your Easter dinner. Chilly here too. In fact we even had a fire last night and it felt good.

4/9/04
So how many of you turned your heat off in the last few weeks thinking that was it for the year? I did, and brrrrr! Chilly out there! But here in Lincoln today there's a plus to being outside or having your windows open: that great scent of spring rain. Nothing like it! :-)

Hey, I just now put together a page containing, in one handy place, all the links you need to give your computer a spring tune-up. All the tools are free and easy to use, and if you don't have these programs or something like them on your machine, you should! Why did I spend some of my valuable time putting this information together, you ask? Because I live to give, my friend!

Protect your computer!

I had the wisdom teeth surgery yesterday. It went well, so they say, I don't remember much after they put the IV in. It was about an hour. I slept on and off all day and night. They have me on Vicodin for the pain and I needed it when the numbness wore off. Donna, I think you told me that your jaw hurt from being open so long. Yeah, me too. I can't open it very far. Lockjaw I guess. I got stiches in the bottom, and they hurt more. I have had "bunny ears" as Tristen calls them tied to my head and will keep that up all day. It's two tube socks safety pinned together with an ice bag in each. I ate pudding and lots of water yesterday. Ryan made breakfast for dinner and I ate some eggs and toast. It is hard to fight your instincts and not push the food back to the chewing teeth. All in all I feel OK. Not great but OK. I felt better yesterday after I took 6 pills of prednisone, which is a steroid, to help with the swelling. I take 5 this afternoon, 4 tomorrow, etc. until it is gone. Prednisone is something they give you in vapor form when you have an asthma attack at the hospital to strenghten up your lungs. Anyhow. That's my news...
Donna

From my work window I can see one wing of our building. Today 2 Canadian geese flew to the roof and stayed for a really long time. They just looked around and walked on the very ledge--you could even see their webbed feet curve on the edge of the building. I hope they make a nest there.
Donna
4/8/04
If that's true then why are word scramble's so hard? I wonder if it has to be read in context within a sentence? Maybe seeing the word jumbled on its own is more difficult.

Sentence context is probably a big help, but remember it said the first and last letter have to be properly positioned. So which is harder: A randomized word by itself (slebalba), a word with correct first and last letters (belabsal), or the same word in context (The sport of bleasabl)? --Gary

Quick word about today's cool site. Remember back in 1986 when the city of Chernobyl in Russia was the scene of a nuclear power plant disaster? Certainly hundreds and probably many thousands of people died that day -- the exact number was never revealed, perhaps it was never known. Many hundreds of square miles are still uninhabitable because of the radiation in that region, and will remain that way for centuries to come. Even so, curious people still enter the area to explore, and today's cool site was put together by a Russian woman who enjoys making dangerous motorcycle trips through it, taking photos as she goes. The site has about 30 pages, each with several photos -- so with dial-up some pages may take a minute or two to load. But it's worth your trouble! It's an amazing site.

Thanks again for a great time in Lincoln! It was fun to see everybody. It was rough going back to work and school today. Vacations should be 50 weeks and work 2 weeks. Weather here is warm and windy, grass is getting green, but not nearly as far along as yours is! Hey Livi, we saw a dog pulling a wagon of wood chips and thought of you, he was one fine dog! We are about to grill some chicken on the patio, so I should get busy.

Hi all, been awhile since I've written. Been busy, busy here! Sounds like everyone had fun in Lincoln. We enjoyed our day there -- Anna -- We missed you!! Can't believe you weren't there :)
Gary - sorry I didn't check the April 1st web site out. But you did get me with the changes on the front page. Took me several attempts until I realized what day it was.
Amanda - congratulations on your position of secetary. Should be a good experience for you. Can't believe Tristen hasn't planned every detail of her birthday party. Erika was taking her invitations to school today. She is inviting 6 girls for a slumber party. She had conferences last week. Got a very good report card with lots of A's and B's. Emilys report card came last week too, her was very good also, but she will be taking one class this summer, Driver's Ed.
What are everyone's plans and menus for Easter? Brent's sister and Mother are coming here.

Well, we did the induction ceremony for Pi Sigma Alpha. I was nominated to be the secretary. Our chapter is Theta Theta. That's about all I know so far. There were 10 of us inducted today, it was a neat deal.

Hello... Not much on here in a few days. That's a typical weekend though I guess. Last night we went to Ft. Worth for dinner at Joe's Crab Shack, it was great. Traffic was not. There is a Nascar race today in Dallas, the interstate was backed up for hours. Luckily we only needed about a miles stretch of interstate to get there. And the high society was out and eating too, since they were all in town for the races. Yesterday morning we had a Girl Scout thing at the university where the girls got to play/practice basketball, soccer and cheerleading with the Lady Indians (the women athletes at MSU), Tristen had a blast, she wants to go to the soccer camp they do this summer. Today Tristen has a birthday party to go to at that Gymnastics Sport Center for her friend Amanda. We are trying to plan a party for her, but she can't decide on anything. Ryan and I are going to a luncheon at my school today for Pi Sigma Alpha, a Political Science Honor Society that I was just accepted into. It's an induction ceremony today and election of officers for next year. This deal is a lifetime membership, something good on the resume. Haven't heard yet about the Mortar Board Honor Society. Tomorrow night we have a dinner to go to for Girl Scouts, and a meeting afterward where the selected few of us (myself included) will vote for the board of directors. Then on Thursday I go in for my wisdom teeth surgery. IV sedation and all, can't wait. Actually I can't, I'm sick of them. They don't hurt they are just an annoyance, they make my jaw ache, give me headaches and mess with my sinuses. It will be better all around once they are out. Anyhow... Tristen & Teghan got a box the other day from grandma and Donna and Teghan loves the babies. There were two but she doesn't want Tristen to have one. She also got very excited about the kitty knife, she had to show Ryan 4 times and tell him "it's Teeann's."

So, APRIL FOOL, Gary, thought my computer had had it for sure!!
The Hatgidakis' clan got on the road about a quarter of 7, I would say a third of them were bright eyed. Had a really nice few days and was glad they came, my house is very quiet today, and so now must make the table smaller and put extra chairs back in waiting. Admit I am tired today, will not be rushing into much.
