I just heard that the President of Venezuela -- you know, the guy who the "Christian" Pat Robertson said we should assassinate? -- is promising aid to the victims of the hurricane, and is going to cut the price of heating oil (which we buy from Venezuela in huge quantities) to the U.S. Take that, Pat!

I remember that crawl. It reminded me of someone telling me years ago that I'd better see New Orleans while I had the chance. I took a walking tour of the garden district while I was there. The guide was an older teacher that led tours for fun. She knew so much history of the city and had so many funny stories about the culture and the people. We had stopped for drinks half way through the tour. When she got up she said in her thick southern drawl, 'please don't think I've wet my pants, it's just unusually hot today.' Such a funny comment but it sounded so refined the way she said it. One of the pictures Gary posted was from the garden district. I also went on a swamp tour just outside of New Orleans. I had been dreading it and had a really hard time getting on that boat--it was dusk and the tour would go into the evening. Just where I wanted to be--in a small boat at night in a swamp thick with alligators. But it was one of the most beautiful sights I had ever seen. At one point Charlie our guide turned off the boat and we sat there for the longest time just listening to the birds and animals around us. Alligators swam up beside us, their noses skimming the water as they waited for Charlie to throw them a marshmallow, then they'd open their mouths, snatch it up and float away. That swamp leads right into the gulf and I wonder how Charlie and his family are doing. I imagine that area is completely under water now.

Sean- Senora Ship retired I think because I hadn't had her since but I wish I still did, she was a pretty good teacher. So are you having to take Spanish then now in college? So weird Amanda, you, and me all had her....

I've been watching coverage of New Orleans, unbelievable! Can't imagine what all those people will do. Donna, I was thinking about your trip there, thought you would have some interesting things to say. Didn't realize it was 5 years ago. Another day of school done, only 176 more to go :)

Anyone remember this crawl from about six weeks ago (July 14)?

"AMAZING FACT: Louisiana loses about 30 square miles of land each year to coastal erosion, hurricanes, and a thing called subsidence (or sinking). Much of New Orleans actually sits below sea level. Parts of the French Quarter have sunk about 2 feet since 1950. Experts agree that storm tides from a direct hit by a major hurricane would swamp much of the city. Combining the effects of erosion, subsidence, and possible hurricanes, the U.S. Geological Survey says New Orleans will likely be on the verge of extinction within a hundred years."

Hey everyone! I got all my Watershed stuff today. I still am unsure about my schedule because I have to pick my classes. I found out that Watershed has Spanish 3/4 also. That makes me really happy because before when I read about it I had it for all four years unlike how Roosevelt had 3/4. So now I am going into 3/4 and I should be done this year for good! Hope you had a good first day Lindsey!

What a great article on Frank. I hope he has an undefeated season.

I hadn't heard that about New Orleans. That's so sad. I really hope the city can survive. I was in New Orleans 5 years ago almost to the day. I was thinking about that when they were evacuating and all the tourists had to go the Superdome because the airports had been shut down. What a horrible way to spend a vacation. The people there are so kind and friendly. One day while I was there, a bus driver saw my friends and me walking just on the edge of French Quarter, he made a u-turn, pulled up beside us and asked where we were headed. We told him we just had a few blocks to go, he looks at his watch and says 'boy I just can't take you there. I've got a tour waiting for me.' Then he flags down a cab and tells the driver to take us where we were headed. He said we were just on the edge of the bad side of town and wanted to make sure we stayed safe. It was broad daylight, plenty of people around and we only had to walk a few blocks. There were a bunch of encounters like that -- really friendly people going out of their way to make sure we had a nice vacation. I spent most of my time in the French Quarter and it's sad to think it may be destroyed. I just did a google earth search of the city. I wish I could remember the address of the place I stayed at. I think it was by the Louis Armstrong Park. But that may not be the right name because I couldn't find it. I'd also like to see the cemetary but I can't remember the name of it either. I wish the pictures on google earth were current. It's hard to imagine a city under water.

Wow, just saw this on the morning news: While it was still hit hard by the hurricane, New Orleans thought it missed the worst of it -- but just in the past few hours, the levees (i.e., walls and pumping systems holding back the water) along Lake Ponchartrain have begun to fail, and the water is pouring into the city. The geography of New Orleans is bowl-shaped and below sea level, so it's like a bathtub filling up with water. When I left the house around 8 this morning, the French Quarter -- which had been mostly untouched by yesterday's storm -- had water a foot or two deep in the streets. And of course, the entire city is without power, where temps are supposed to get into the 90s today.

Shifting gears a little, here's an interesting article on Ohio coach Frank Solich.

Hey Lindsey, I have had three years of Spanish also! However I only got to Spanish 2 (twice). :-( Sounds pretty good though, when I do say I have had three years of spanish though, huh? Some left out details never hurt. ;-) Good luck! Will you have Senoria Ship anyomore?
Lindsey
8/29/05
Hey sounds like you guys had a fun vacation! Looks like a fun spot to visit. So as you've heard I finally finished the HP book, hard to get it read when everyone was here this summer. Very good book, even though Gary ruined the whole thing for me! Just kidding Gary ;). I actually got to that part that night so it was no big deal! First day of school tomorrow and we already get Monday off....it's as if summer hasn't even ended! I won't actually have my first FULL day of school until next Tuesday! Emily, for Spanish I'm taking 4 years because to graduate from most colleges you need 4 years and so I thought why not get them done while I don't have to pay for them, so I'll take Spanish 2 this year and next year take a Spanish 3/4 which is two years combined so I can get all 4 years done in 3.

Good to hear everyone is doing well getting back into the school mode. I think I have a pretty good feel for how my classes are going to be now. Should all be pretty good, just busy. I have already been assigned 2 big papers in my Humanities class, and its crazy already! But, I think I am going to like it. We are definitely going to be going to Omaha sometime soon to visit the Joslyn Art Museum. There is going to be a big Picasso display there. So, I am looking forward to that, it should be an intresting day!
Metcalfs, looks like you had a fun weekend, nice pictures.
Sean, I would definitely say you have a knack for writing, what a crazy storm!
Livy, hope you are enjoying middle school. Erika has music and gym first period too, how cool!
Anna, good news about the new school. Hope you can get your license soon! I remember having to log my 20+ hours to graduate drivers ed. I thought it would never end!!!
Lindsey, What kind of class is "Teen Issues"? Hope you have fun in Spanish, I am sooo glad to be completely done with foriegn language credits!! :)
Anna
8/29/05
Hey everyone! I am happy to go to school now because I now have one. The license is when I want to take it. I still have two hours left of behind the wheel but I am going to finish those HOPEFULLY this week! Then I can take the test whenever I set it up. Amanda, it looks like you guys had a great trip and great pictures! Sounds like you guys had a nice getaway!
Amanda
8/29/05
Anna, that is great news about school!! I can't wait to hear about it. And also, good news about the job, that should get you through highschool! And it will keep all of us in with all the cool stuff there. How about the drivers license, where does that stand?
Amanda
8/29/05
OK Gary~ I hear that you spoiled the HP ending for Lindsey, and today's front page is a repeat. What gives???

Yeah, today's picture was used once before, during "Dogs and Cats" Week or something several months ago, but it was used in conjunction with several other photos, not featured by itself like it is today. It's a great photo! So I figured one more time wouldn't hurt.

As to HP, I'm not sure that it's technically possible for someone who hasn't read the book(!) to spoil the ending, because... how would I know? I was just saying what I heard, and also I thought that Lindsey had already read the book. By the way, has anyone here seen "The Sixth Sense"? Turns out Bruce Willis was dead all along! --Gary

Gary

Okay, new photos are up!

And Lindsey, please note the countdown page: You've got to hand over the Oscar in three days. :-)

Boy, newsletter suddenly got active! Thanks for all the weekend reports everybody, and for the first-day-of-school reports from Emily and Erika. Congrats, Anna, on Watershed! That sounds amazing.

Okay, check the reviews page for some new reviews; and a bunch of new pictures from Texas just arrived, so check back in a little while to see them -- I'll get them up as soon as I can.

Karen

Oh boy, back to school today! The first two days went very well for me. Lots of kids not returning this year so enrollment is down, probably about 75 kids this year. So it should be an easier year, unfortuntely also not as many pay increases. Had a quiet week-end, Emily and Erika put the kitty condo in the garage. The kitties LOVE it!! Hard to get them out of it, so I think we now officially have 5 cats! Had lots of tomatoes and peppers on the vine so I canned about 5 pints of salsa. Emily loves it. Anna, glad to hear you got into your school, anxious to hear how you like. Sean, I really enjoyed reading about your afternoon, but I am thinking maybe, maybe you baby your car a bit too much :)
Amanda
8/29/05
We had a great weekend in Dallas. The hotel was great, it was a very cool experience. We went swimming, ate at the Riverwalk Cafe & the girls got to pet the baby animals that were there at the petting zoo. The mall also was cool, it had an ice skating rink and every store we ever want. Ryan got a Barnes & Noble fix, Teghan got a Disney store trip & Tristen got a Limited Too trip. I enjoyed, as usual, Bath & Body Works & the White Barn Candle company. Oh, and Teghan enjoyed the kiosk with the hermit crabs. Speaking of crabs, we then went out to eat at our favorite, Joe's Crab Shack...
Lindsey
8/28/05
Sean I was reading what you wrote into the newsletter and it kinda looks like you have a knack for writing between this and your paper on your apartment. Glad you got your car home in time though!
Olivia

Hey everyone! I just thought I would tell you guys my schedule. I'm excited about starting middle school and I remembered my locker combination and where it is but the only problem is that I only have one class in my pod and all my other ones are all over the school but I still think it will be cool. My schedule is....

1. Music/Gym (They alternate every other day)
2. Health
3. Math
4-5. English
LUNCH
6. Social Studies

I haven't gotten my second semester schedule yet, but I think I will start science instead instead of Social Studies and Science is the only one in my pod so right now I don't have classes in my pod. Well talk to you all later. I'll write about my first day of school tomorrow!

Ok, I have to tell this story. I have midterms this week so I have been doing nothing but studying. I wanted a fresh atmosphere to study in since I had been sitting at my desk for hours on end. I packed my bag up and headed to Love library on UNL's campus. It was a nice sunny day when I went in, a little hot even. After about 45 minutes of note takeing, I decided It would be better if I typed my notes. So, I packed my stuff up and headed home. Walking out side it was dark and much cooler. I even made a coment about the change in weather to a young woman unlocking her bike. As I walked to my car a few blocks away I noticed other cars with water drops on them. "Great" I thought, my car isn't "freshly" washed, but it is clean and now it is going to get rained on. If I just would have stayed home I wouldn't have had to worry about it. Once ariving at my car I looked down 14th street and seen a wall of rain coming a few blocks away. Heavy rain... Cars were splashing up water a few feet high as they drove through instantly formed puddles. I opened my door and got in. Seconds later rain was coming down so hard I couldn't see out my windshild until I turned on my wipers. What timing! I started the car and drove home, not in any hurry, the car is already soaked. That is until I heard and seen HAIL. I drove through all the side streets so I could stay under trees to hopefully deflect or slow down the hail, dodging downed tree limbs everywhere. Once getting to my apartment, the puddles in the alley were as deep as I have ever seen. I got half soaked in the few seconds it took me to get out and open my garage door, but I managed. I backed my car in, shut it off, and got out. I walked to the edge of my garage door to watch the small scale hurricane with a little disbelief in the luck I had just experienced. Then more hail came. Bigger hail. What I had drove through wasn't bad, but this stuff; it might have caused a few dimples in a hood, roof, or trunk, here and there. My feeling of luck couldn't get anymore intense after getting in my car seconds before the rain, so when this happend, these feelings turned to worry. "Did I rush my car home to get it inside the garage so a tornado could come by and destroy the garage with the car in it?" I thought about it for a second and turned to look at my car. It was clean, but soaked. I couldn't do anything until I grabbed my towel and dried it off. I waited for about ten minutes for the rain to let up so I could walk upstairs to my apartment. I snapped a few pictures while I waited. What an event. Study time, till next time everyone.

Yeah, that was one exciting storm! I saw the whole thing from my living room, safely behind glass. Big marble-sized hail, and lots of it: the hail covered the deck outside my back door, and I could watch it knocking off leaves and limbs from the trees. I felt sorry for all the people at the fair today... Wild! --Gary

Hey everyone! We just got back from Omaha where we went to the Quest Center to see the women's Husker volleyball team play in a tournament. They played Stanford and won all three matches and came in first in the tournament! It was a GREAT game! Husker games are so fun to go to because the whole crowd gets into it and it was really fun to hear the band and it gets me in the mood for Husker football! I think the women's volleyball will have yet another good year though, they played great! Their ranked #1 in the country and Stanford is #3. Fun night though and cool to see the Quest Center set up for volleyball!

Oh, BTW...after the game we were leaving and there was a HUGE fireworks show after the game so it was nice to watch while we were waiting to get out of the parking lot. Then we went out to eat at Applebee's, the same one actually that Tristen, Amanda, and me found the $40.

Hope you guys have a fun time on your vacation!

Anna

Hey everyone! I haven't been on for a long time, I have been really busy lately. I now am working up at 42nd street. I really like it and it's so easy because I used to go up there a lot so I pretty much know how to do everything already and it's a plus that it's so close. I also heard from Watershed and I got in. So I start school Sept. 6, a little later than everyone else. Livy, sounds like you had fun. Sorry the vet didn't come. Amanda, Ryan, Tristen & Teghan I hope you guys have fun and I can't wait to see pictures! Tonight my Dad wasn't feeling to good, so my Mom and I thought we would get out of the house since no one else was home. We went to a movie and we saw "Must Love Dogs." I really liked it. I know my Mom did too. Not to much else is new here, it was kind of busy last week. My Dad and I went to the Twins game on Thursday and that was A LOT of fun and I just worked for pretty much the rest of the week. No plans yet for this week, my last week of break. It went by fast but I had a GREAT summer!
Amanda, Ryan, Tristen & Teghan

We are checking in from suite 6120 of the Gaylord Texan. We have taken the tour and are about to take a swim in one of the two pools. We are also going to have dinner on the river walk. Then we will retire to our room that overlooks Lake Grapevine. We have Highspeed Internet in our room so that is where the posting is coming from. Pictures and details to follow!!! Wish you were all here.

Hey everybody! Right now it is noon, and I just got back from the Nebraska State Fair. Me and Dad left for the fair at about 7:30 am, but my mom had to come and pick us up because the jeep got trapped between oh about 25 school busses just for the school's bands to play there. So later on we have to go pick up the jeep a little later than 2 because thats when all the school busses leave. But the vet didn't come thoe, we don't know why. But I did get to feed a baby calf milk for only 30 seconds, because he wasn't hungry because he drank too much water. I also got to hold some baby chicks and I fell in love with one special horse the most out of all. It was supposed to be for the pony rides, but was in the cage with a couple of other ponys. He is an autum brown with a white curvy line on his nose. He let me pet him and give him hay from my hand. I also got some pictures and can send them in for the website.

P.S. I also got to see a dog show and they had a lot of them, they even had a Ceaser dog. But there was like a golden retriver, a lab, a spaniel, a dauchsand, and so on. I also loved the welsh corgie, the border collie and the Ceaser dog the best. Talk to you all later!!!!!!

Well, for Gary and anybody else that is intrested, my first day of my JUNIOR year went pretty well. For first semester I have:
1-Chemistry
2-Business & Personal Law
3-Art Appreciation
4-Economics
5-Algebra 2
6-Debate
7-Humanities
So, it will be pretty busy. My Chem, Algebra, and Humanities class are all college prep and I already have homework in 2 classes ON THE FIRST DAY! I think I will like my art class. Its a dual credit class through one of the colleges in town. So, I will get 3 art credits that will transfer to most colleges. Also, somethings I'm looking forward to in Art and Humanities is all the field trips! We will be going to several art events at the Art Center. We will also be going to Cedar Rapids in the fall, to see the American Gothic painting that will be on tour there. For Humanities we are going to go to Omaha for a day and see some of the art museums and to some theater productions too. There might be some other little day trips that will come up for those classes too, so should be fun!
Amanda
8/26/05
Gary, that's hilarious that you signed your "MMMmmmmmmm, wheatgrass........" comment. I don't know anyone else who would make that comment.

I guess it's an acquired taste! Some of you juicers out there might be seeing the light. --Gary

Amanda
8/26/05
So, I mowed this morning before it got too hot. Our grass is CRAZY thick from all that rain we got two weeks ago. Needless to say, it was rough. But what made it rougher than usual, you ask? The fact that it smelled just like a wheatgrass shot!! Argh. I wanted to puke!!!

MMMmmmmmm, wheatgrass..... --Gary

Gary

So, TX and IA are back in school; and next up is NE, then MN. Right? As I mentioned below, the University has been in classes for the past week, and it feels good to have the school year started. I hear the band practicing in the stadium (ala Tommy Lee) every morning when I come to work. Next thing you know, the leaves will be turning, the air will be crisp, and Saturdays will mean football.... Bring it on!

Hey Lincolnites, did last night's storm wake you up? Did me! Went through around 2 am, I think. Lots of lightning (though not much thunder, oddly), and the winds and rain were wild. I looked out my back door and the big tree in the back yard was getting really whipped and twisted around. But the whole thing was over in 15 or 20 minutes.

Great job on the kitty condo, you guys! I especially like the stencil work, and the names. :-) But no cable TV?? No mini-bar??

And hey, we need first-day-of-school reports from everybody!

Lindsey
8/25/05
Amanda's-- Sounds like you guys will have a fun weekend. That looks like a really nice hotel and the mall sounds really fun! I still have yet to get to Joe's Crab Shack, but I want to go soooo bad! Have fun!

BTW, I go back on the 30th and Livy goes back the 29th.

Amanda
8/25/05
So, I couldn't decide what to do with graduation money... So, Saturday we are going to Dallas (really Grapevine, but it's all the same, it's stuck in between Dallas & Fort Worth) and we are going to stay at this new hotel. Then Sunday when we check out we are going to check out a new mall. On our way home we will stop at our favorite restaraunt, Joe's Crab Shack. We are excited. It's a mini vacation!
Emily

Erika's first day of school!
Emily
8/25/05
Well Erika was off to school by 7:30 this morning and Mom went in about an hour ago. We had to take a first day of school picture of Erika, so I will be sure to send that in! I will go in to school after lunch to pick up my schedule then I start tomorrow. I am already looking forward to Christmas break!
Sounds like you will have a fun weekend, Livy! You should just come down here and see the baby kittens. They have been in the kitty condo pretty much non stop since yesterday afternoon, they love it!
Amanda
8/25/05
When do Olivia, Lindsey & Anna go back to school? Ryan goes back Monday, NOT ME!!!

Lincoln schools start on Monday, the 29th. Anna, I think is early September, but I don't know for sure (Anna, little help here?). University classes started last Monday. And the first Husker game is only 12 days away... --Gary

8/24/05
Hey Everybody! This saturday morning I get to hang out with a vet and go to the state fair for about 2 hours. I don't know if the vet is a he or a she yet, but I'm really excited. I get to do this because my friend Claire, well her mom knows someone at the fair that helps run the fair. So they had a bidding auction to be an assistant to the vet. Jackie didn't win the bidding, but since she knows someone there, she can get me in. It's just going to be me thats going to hang out with the vet. So I get to see cows, horses, pigs, dogs, cats, mostly farm animals, but more like birds and such, but I know that I'll love the baby puppies and kittens. I'll let you all know how it turns out. Talk to you all later!!!!!!!!!!
Gary
8/24/05
New photos! (I know these really belong on the Projects page, but it was faster and easier to put them on the photo page.)
Lindsey
8/24/05
Sean, I can get the recipe for you if you want, there really easy to make.
Kansas City was fun, did a lot of fun shopping and found my new favorite mall!
Tristen that's good you had a great summer. I did too! That just means we have to do even more fun stuff next summer!
Karen
8/24/05
The crawl "My pants smell like my sandwich" was actually said by Emily. We had gone to Applebees for lunch yesterday. When we got home that was just what she said. Last day of vacation for us. I have to go to school for a bit today. Have a lunch and get the schedule. The kitties were sooo gross this morning. Looked out the window and saw them munching on a baby bunny. The condo is on "hold" for the time being.

Sorry about the mis-attribution! Somehow I read "Emily" and typed "Erika." Anyway, the crawl is now fixed. --Gary

Gary
8/24/05
Okay, I've got two questions:

Erika -- "My pants smell like my sandwich"....?????
Livy -- "Don't Waste the Paste, Yo"....?????

Amanda
8/24/05
Gary~ I think you can cross off the "Have a great summer" & "have a great trip with lots of laughter" from the summer list & perhaps close it down for the year. It was a great idea, I'm so glad we had it. Just to prove it was a great summer, one of the first things Tristen had to do at school was to make two lists. They were things she DID do this summer & things she DID NOT do, but wanted to do. She had a bunch of things on her DID list, like: Lake, Mall, Jice Stoq, Cook, Wash & Nbraksa for 6 weeks. On her DID NOT do list: NOTHING! It's blank!! That is the sign of a satisfied kid on summer break! I don't think she will ever forget this summer, and it will be hard to top in the years to come. Of course, if we are moving back next summer, that one is sure to be good too!

Amen to that! I'll take the list down on Labor Day, as an official "End of Summer" thing. :-) --Gary

Sean
8/23/05
Lindsey, I was at your house Sunday night and dad gave me the left over cheese cake cup cakes you made. They were great!! Did you post the recipe?

Livy, Sounds like KC was fun! Holla!

Livy and Kylie
8/23/05
Hey everyone! This is Livy. I only say that because my friend Kylie is here with me and we are trying to find the song 1-2 step so I can teach Kylie the dance that Linz tought me from her dance. Here she is, Kylie say something. Don't Waste the Paste, Yo!!! Thats all folks. I know, were a WEIRD bunch! Hola yall! TTYL lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Emily
8/23/05
Yeah, I'm hoping that mother cat doesn't come back she was mean! She will NOT be welcomed!
Erika and I primed the cat house this afternoon, after taking Dad out for a delicious lunch at Applebees! It looks really nice, tomorrow we will finish painting/decorating, and getting their carpets in and they will be able to offically move in. We have been getting lots of fun pictures, so we will try to get them sent in tomorrow!
Mom goes in to her school tomorrow for a lunch and will get the schedules and all the details fot this year. Then her and Erika start on Thursday. I go in for about an hour on Thurs. just to get my schedules and locker and all that fun stuff and offically start classes on Friday.
Erika
8/23/05
Okay Donna this is a true fact when kitties are younger catnip has no effect on them. And the mother probalbly wouldn't fit through the door I saw her once shes really really big.
Donna
8/23/05
Okay Erika, what if it happened this way: Tina and CJ being street cats got mixed up with the wrong crowd. They are the ones that got hooked on catnip--not their mom. And maybe the mom hears that her poor babies are in trouble, visits them, tries to get them on the straight and narrow but sees she's failing and leaves. Isn't that possible? And if that's true, don't you think she should be welcomed into the kittie condo this winter to visit the rest of her kids when it's freezing cold outside?
Erika
8/23/05
Donna the way a mother steals her own chilren is when you aboandon them (probably high on Catnip) for 2 months then you take them. And were pretty sure that she took them because she was there 2 days before tina and C.J. went missing.
Amanda
8/23/05
Donna~ Im not sure about that magazine, but I know the list from last year was HUGE! So don't order it until I figure it out...
Livy

Hey evrybody! I was kind of busy the last couple of days to tell this story. But about a week or two ago, I went to Worlds of Fun with my friend Shelby for her B-day. We were going to go to Oceans of Fun too, but the weather wasn't really nice for that. It was just Shelby, her mom, her sister Haley, her sister's friend Maccee, and me that went for about three days. We stayed in a two story cabin by lots a other cabins around us. But me and Shelby got the two futons, but put them into a bed, Susan got the bed across the hall, and Haley and Maccee got the the top part of the house, it was just a big floor, and they had their sleeping bags. The first night we orderd pizza, the next night we had Mcdonalds and Taco Bell. Then the next morning we left. I got back at about 4. But about the rides, I don't think we needed to go to Oceans of fun, because we got SOAKED just going on the Monsoon, the viking voyager, and even standing on the bridge as people went down the Monsoon! I also went on bumper cars, but I got stuck for about a minute or two because another kid hit me, but did I get him back! ;) Then I also went on the scrambler, oh, and the best ride of all was the Detinator! It's kind of like Big Ben, except you don't get stuck at the top for about 2 minutes, and it wasn't that long, thats why we went on a couple of times. Oh, we also got to see thier dog show. It was cool! I think the border collie was the best. He would do two flips in the air while catching frisbies, and another one juggled frisbies with his mouth, oh, and a jack russle did a handstand, or I should say a pawstand. It was great. Oh we also went to a mall on our way back, and I got a dog t-shirt that I got to color, it's a beagle.

Hey evryone!! Yesturday we got back from Kansas City school shopping. I had a BLAST!! I got my ears double pierced, and we went to two malls. But the second one was a lot better! But it was just my mom, Linz, Claire, Claire's mom, and me that went. In Oak Park Mall (the second mall) they had a Rainforest Cafe there and we ate there for lunch. It was so cool, there was a waterfall, a bar that had the legs of animals, oh and a lepard would roar, along with the gorillas and elephants that would roar too. Our glasses were so cool, when you touched a button on the bottom they would light up in all different colors, like a mini strobe light. When they run out of battiries, you can replace them. Oh, and I also got a t-shirt at Rainforest Cafe that had a white tiger's head on it, and it glows in the dark. Amanda, I guess I liked your shoes so much I got a pair of shoes that dont really have a back either, and I got some shoes to keep at school for gym. Talk to ya later.

Amanda, is Cottage Living one of the magazines offered? That's one I was thinking about ordering anyway.

Erika, how does a mom steal her own children? And how do you know she took them?
Erika

Hi everyone, Donna we did think about the kitties growing and for the door we measured Nicole and thier mother only came back once and stole Tina and Cocoa Jr. and I hope there isn't enough room for her!!!
Amanda

Just a reminder... As Girl Scouts are heating back up for the year I was reminded of something. We start fall product sales soon (the nuts) and we also do magazine subscriptions. So, if you are thinking of ordering a new magazine, wait just a bit to do it. Also, you can renew your magazine through us (even if you didn't originally order it through us). The troop gets $3 for each new or renewal magazine! We did great with it last year, our troop sold the most subscriptions, so we are hoping to top that this year!

On a side note, Lincolnites: be watching your paper, my university was supposed to send a clip to the Journal Star about my graduation. I have no idea when it will be in there, or where, but keep an eye out. Call me the day it comes out, if possible so I can tell others who may not have seen it. It could be tomorrow, it could be 3 months from now. I read one over the summer that was from March or something.

Donna~ Hagel was in Lincoln the week after we left. I knew that a few weeks before I was to leave. The problem was he was there Tuesday & Wednesday, Tristen's first & second days of school. Couldn't miss that. He actually was in our office for almost a whole day on Wednesday I think. Bummer!!!
Donna
8/22/05
Erika, I can't wait to see those pictures. Just curious, when you were designing it, did you take into consideration that those kitties will be bigger this winter? Do you think they will all be able to fit in it at the same time? And what if the mom comes back? She might want to visit them at Christmas. Will there be room for her too?

Hi everybody I know Donna and Marsha are intrsted in the Kitty-Condo witch is basically just a wood rectangle with an old rug inside and a little hole/door in the front and the back half of the roof is on hinges so it folds up. Tonight I think dad and I are going to put on the front and it will be done then me and Emily will paint it with some old paint. The kittens already love it we know that because only half of the top and the walls were on and they were sleeping in it witch we took pics. of and we will send in when its all done.

Amanda, I was just checking Gallup job postings and there are openings in London, too. That would be fun, but of course out of the question. ;-)
We finally have a cool day here--in the low 80's. I can't believe how hot and humid it was this weekend. I am officially done with summer. I want fall weather, football, sweaters and boots. Everything here looks brown and crunchy.
Gary, that's a nice looking site. Have you had any buyers yet?
I heard that Hagel was on some news show Sunday and he was speaking out against Bush's handling of the war again. Sweet. Oh and Amanda, I think Hagel was in town shortly after you left too, so you just missed him.
Where is Olivia? Why haven't we heard from you (or Cher)?
Erika, I gotta see that kitty condo. Please write in with details.

About my site, thanks; but that's more or less their generic look. I can get in there and modify it if I want, but haven't yet. And yes, I have made two sales -- both to me. :-) --Gary

Marsha~ It depresses me to look for jobs in Lincoln & Omaha because there are many more opportunities for me there than here in Wichita Falls. And I can't take a job there yet. We probably won't be back to NE until next summer, and then that should be for good. That is of course, barring any unseen events, like not being able to sell our house, etc...
Marsha
8/21/05
We did a cook out for Zach tonight... everyone's feeling better. Tonight it is cool out, just like fall, very comfortable. Anna has been driving every day. She cooked a lot too. I am very curious about the "Kitty Condo" in Sioux City. They are the luckiest alley cats in the world. Amanda, why is it depressing to apply for Nebraska jobs? What are the long range (or 3-4 month) plans for you guys? Anyway, good luck in the search, and good luck to Ryan on breaking the Tivo code. John had a low key weekend, but is starting to feel better. Thanks for the phone call the other day Livy :)! I saw a dog book today called Dogs 24/7 and I thought of you. Also saw Cats 24/7 and thought of E & E.

Hello to all. I am currently trying to crack TIVO's encryption code. Amanda wanted to be able to record shows that we have recorded off our TIVO. Well.........Lets just say its not as easy as stated!!! Gary if you would like could you help research this. I have racked my brain to figure out how to crack the encryption. If we spend some $ we could purchase Sonic MYDVD and it would do it for us. However TIVO is my friend and I would like to bend it to my will! Everyone have a good week!

I know what you want to do can be done. There's a whole subculture of TiVo hackers out there who have modified it in all kinds of ways, the TiVo being essentially just a computer -- but be aware that once you crack the TiVo case, your warranty is void. One of the shows on the TechTV network (now called "G4") used to run features on modifying the TiVo. A quick search turned up this one (though it refers to ReplayTV and not TiVo directly), and there are probably many more in the G4 archives. Good luck, and keep us posted! --Gary

Not much activity on here lately. We have no news really... Ryan got his books for class this weekend, so he is ready to start. I am SO glad I am not going back!!! Ryan is taking a composition class & history. He will be at class Mondays & Wednesdays from 4-7 starting the 29th. We go tomorrow to sign up Tristen & Teghan for dance class. They are both excited & ready to get going. The job search is stale at the moment. I am going to start making calls this week to the places I submitted resumes to & have not heard anything (which is 7 out of 8). I am going to stop looking for jobs in Lincoln (& Omaha), because it just depresses me. There is one with the Department of Homeland Security in Lincoln that I would love, am eligible for and the pay is great. Also, just this morning on Lincolnjobs.com I found a job for a research analyst for the state of Nebraska dealing with criminal offenders that I qualify for to a T! Research is just about all I did with Political Science & the criminal justice part covers the other aspect to the job. The pay isn't as good, but it's good enough! In Omaha, Gallup hires Emerging Leaders, which I'm sure Donna could explain better, but it's jobs specifially for people like me, fresh with a degree looking to get a foot in a door, anyhow, there are a ton of Emerging Leader positions available. Argh!!!!!

Oh, and last night Ryan hooked up our TiVo to our computer network. What does that mean? Well, we are not sure all the things it can do yet, but the first thing we did was send some pictures from our computer to our big screen, so it played on the TV like a screen saver. Would be nice for like Christmas or something, when lots of people are around & you want something to watch, but you don't want to get into a TV show or movie. Also, you can bring your downnloaded music in MP3 format to your TV & play it through there, which is nice with our surround sound. And today's experiment is this: Whatever shows you have saved on your TiVo can come right to your computer. So you can watch the recorded TV shows on the computer. OK, cool. But we recorded a Kim Possible movie for Tristen on TiVo & we downloaded it onto the computer & now Ryan is going to try to burn it to a DVD. We will let you know how it works!
Grandma, how are you liking your DVR?

Geez everybody, nothing at all in 2 whole day! Guess everyone is just too busy, or too sick! Hope you all are feeling better by now!
We sure haven't been too busy, just enjoying our last few days of vacation, only 3 more days until we go back to school!!! And, we finally got our dance schedules, I think we start the 12th of September, so we will be busy with that then too. This summer sure has gone by WAY too quickly!!
Dad and Erika are working on building a "kitty condo" for the outside cats today, so they won't be too cold once winter comes. Erika was drawing up the blueprints yesterday and Dad is going to go get the wood this afternoon. So, that should keep them busy for awhile. Erika has been coming up with lots of decorating ideas, so we will be sure to get lots of before and after pictures!

Hey, scan Erika's blueprints and send them in. Would be great for the Projects page! :-) --Gary

Geez, feel better you guys!

Kind of a low-key birthday for Zachary! :-) It reminds me of one Thanksgiving that I spent with you all in MPLS. Marsha had been hard at work preparing a beautiful meal, but when Thanksgiving dawned everybody in the house was sick -- except me and Zach! Everybody was laying around moaning and groaning, occasionally making sudden trips to the bathroom.... I suppose Zach and I should have been going around sponging everyone's foreheads and getting juice and whatnot, but instead we went to White Castle for our Thanksgiving meal. Which was great! Nothing like a bag of sliders to make you feel thankful. Ask Zach if he remembers that! :-)

Hey everyone! Well today we were all going to go to Maynards. It's this little town in MN and they have a really good restaurant and its on Lake Minnetonka. We were planning to leave at around 2:00. Well me and my mom come home at about 1:45 and I see that Zach isn't dressed. So I ask Zach if he's going to get dressed and then he goes well I was wondering if maybe we could go another time because Im not feeling to good. So My Dad, Mom, Grandma and I ended up going to Olive Garden instead. Sam wasnt feeling to good either and my Dad was so so. So my Mom and I are just like okay, just trying to figure out what everyone wants to do and since were the only ones that feel good we had to go with the flow. It has been a weird day around here but we had a good day. It has been rainy here also. I hope Tristen is enjoying school!

Neat site, Gary! So, how much profit do you get for them? We might have to buy a few stickers...

The markup (profit) is at $1.50 for the stickers, and $2.00 for the other items. I can get it for you wholesale (never thought I'd ever be saying those words), but I would have to pay shipping to me, then shipping to you, so... The stickers are a bit small -- only 5 inches across -- so won't be quite as visible as my magnet, unless someone is really tailgaiting me. But unfortunately that was the maximum size. Anyway, tell your friends! :-) --Gary

My friends, are you like me? Full of a seething hatred of George Bush? Or maybe you just don't like him. Well then, why not let your feelings be known, by proudly displaying an "Impeach Bush" bumpersticker on your car, boat, or M1A1 armored fighting vehicle? And friends, the same design is also available on coffee mugs, t-shirts, and tote bags! Head on over to: http://www.cafepress.com/333666/ and order today!

Seriously though (as if the foregoing were funny), check out that page. John and Marsha recommended this place to me as a way to get my "impeach Bush" ribbon-magnet out to people. Thanks, you guys! It's a great site. I re-worked the design, applied it to several of their (blank) products, and have actually already done a complete order process just to make sure it works. I ordered two stickers, and received them in less than a week. They don't do actual ribbon-shaped magnets, but they do tons of other things, in addition to the ones I mentioned: buttons, aprons, dog t-shirts(!), greeting cards, postcards, caps, mousepads, throw pillows, teddy bears, you name it. Thank you for your patronage!

Only one week to go before school!! I guess we are ready, just not looking forward to getting back in the routine. Tristen, how is school going for you? We did have a fun day yesterday. I think Emily already said, we went to a great new chinese resturant and then mini golfing. Last week-end we bought a new microwave cart. We took the table out of the kitchen and moved the fridge. Makes a big difference. Lots more room in the kitchen now. The new doors are so nice, look so much better. I do believe that all of our house projects are now complete. Zach -- what are doing to celebrate 24 years? I watched about 10 minutes of the Tommy Lee show. Mostly I was interested in Lincoln scenes. Don't think I'll be watching it again. No more sightings of the snake. We are all pretty careful when we go outside now. I had to have Emily and Erika stand guard when I mowed the lawn this week. The kittens are growing fast, don't know what they will do when Erika is in school all day.

We just watched the TiVoed Tommy Lee show. It was OK. It felt very staged & goofy. Almost an uncomfortable wierdness at times. The only true feeling moments were the band scenes. Those are the ones to watch for I think... Another application turned in today. This one was at the Allred prison unit... No word from any other job... I guess it is all a waiting game...
Gary
8/17/05
I watched the Tommy Lee show, Emily, and I know Grandma did too. I thought it was pretty good! I was glad to see the humor wasn't at the expense of the students, the University, or Nebraska. It is fun to watch for the familiar landmarks. But as a "reality" show...? Yeesh. It's so obviously all put on for the cameras. Is there anybody watching this who thinks he's really taking classes, doing homework, etc.? And, why is he there in the first place??? Never explained! But I'll be watching next week! :-)
Emily
8/17/05
Cute pictures! We have been getting some rain around here today too. Just a few little showers, but we're supposed to be getting some thunderstorms and hail later tonight and tomorrow. Dad took the afternoon off today and we went to a really good new chinese place for lunch then went mini golfing and out for ice cream, so we had a fun day!
So did anybody watch the "Tommy Lee Goes to College" show last night?? We did, thought it was ok, saw a lot of Lincoln landmarks. But, don't know if I will watch it next week. I tried sending a newsletter about it yesterday afternoon, but I guess it never got through. Erika and I have also been watching "So you Think you can Dance" the past few weeks. We have been enjoying it, its a lot like American Idol only with dancing. I'll bet all of the other dancers would enjoy it!
I hope you are loving your new school Tristen.I can't believe you get an ala carte bar for lunch, I didn't get that until I was in middle school! Tell us all about it!
Donna
8/17/05
Really great pictures. Looks like Teghan got new shoes. Of course they're pink. ;-)
Tristen looks very excited to be going back to school. It reminds me of her kindergarten picture where she was sitting at her desk with, I think, a ruler or something. Maybe it was seeing her name on the desk. I just remember there was something she was really impressed about and wanted it in the picture. Weren't there even pictures of her eating a 'healthy breakfast' before her first big day?
Amanda
8/17/05
OK, we are back home, so naturally there are pictures to share. One is of Teghan enjoying the rain. It has rained here for 4 days straight. We have gotten something like 6 inches. The lakes are filling up nicely & the river by the falls is overflowing! They had to close the roads around it & the sidewalks to get to the falls because they are flooded out!! The other picture is of Tristen starting third grade yesterday! She is having a great time so far...

Tristen is very excited to start third grade. She thinks by the second day she will know the building by heart. One thing she is most excited for is the "snack bar" at lunch. They can't use it during the first week, but after that she is there! They have ala carte items like pizza everyday & baked potatoes. Today she gets out at 1:45, but after that it is 3:15.
It is official-- yesterday the registrar stamped my transcript with this all important phrase: Requirements completed for BACHELOR OF ARTS. All that work and those 6 words are what make the difference. Wow. Last night I was up until 11:30 searching for jobs, printing resumes & cover letters and applying online. I applied for 7 jobs though! I am doing one other today from my list, so that will be 8 total. I hope I at least get a call back from one! I applied at these places for a variety of positions... Some of these places have websites if you google them. I'll be sure to keep you posted!

Hey Amanda -- being a Vince Vaughn fan maybe you've already seen it, but if not you should check out a movie called "Swingers." It was early in his career (his first movie, maybe?) but it's classic Vince Vaughn. It co-stars (and was written by) Jon Favreau, the guy who played Monica's rich boyfriend on "Friends." Great dialogue, very funny!

Hey everyone! I still have about 3 weeks of summer left. Tristen I hope you have a Great day tomorrow and you like the third grade. I still haven't heard anything from Watershed. Its been pretty cold and rainy here. Im still not use to having my own room and not being around all you guys. I miss You guys!

Hey Anna, I'll soon be sending you a CD holding all the movies that Amanda, Ryan, and Livy took on their cameras while you were here. And also one that happened after you left: the Tasting of the Wheat Grass Juice. Should bring back some memories! :-) --Gary

    How about some entertainment news?
  • I mentioned earlier that Steven Spielberg will be doing another Indiana Jones film with Harrison Ford; but before that takes off, Spielberg's got another really exciting project lined up. He's going to do a biographical picture on Abraham Lincoln, played by Liam Neeson. Preliminary work and research has been going on for about eight months now. Can't wait for this one! Filming begins in the spring, so maybe a Christmas 2006 release...?
  • Another Garfield movie is in the works, with Bill Murray doing the voice again. It will be out in Summer of 2006.
  • Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen will be starring in "The Merchant of Venice" -- to be filmed in Las Vegas, in entirely modern costumes and settings. This could be really interesting, especially when compared to the historically faithful recent version starring Al Pacino (which you should rent if you haven't seen it--very good!).
    Donna
    8/15/05
Olivia--you went to Kansas City this weekend? What were you doing there? Tell Cher I said hello (lip). Why is she only talking to the Texas group? That's so rude. You can tell her I said that too.

Tristen, good luck on your first day of school tomorrow. I hope you like your new teacher. It seems like this was not the teacher you were hoping for. Please write and tell us all about it.

Oh my gosh Erika, thanks for the laugh. I wish we had that on tape. Remember when you were little we had to call snakes ballarina's--we couldn't even say the word snake around you. Why can't you just think of snakes as kitties without fur and paws?
    Erika
    8/15/05
Hi everyone today I saw somthing very disterbing at least to me.
I just got done feeding the kittens this morning and was going inside I was in the driveway looked at the patio to see if the kittens were following then I saw it!! A black coil falling from a brick I looked at it hoping that it wasn't that, but when it uncoiled and climbed up the brickes I knew it was; A snake. I ran away but I was wearing sandals they fell of so I had to run back and get them and the snake was gone!!! I still don't know where it is!!!!

Yikes! Erika, you ran away so fast you left your shoes behind...??? :-) --Gary

This summer really has gone by fast!! Only 11 more days of vacation until classes offically start for me. Dance and Mayor's Youth Commission activities will be starting up pretty soon too. I guess it will be good to get back into it all, but I could sure go for a few more weeks of break! :)
I was just looking through the Circus site. Looks like a neat program, I'm sure it was fun to see!
Yesterday we all went to Elk Point to go to Edgar's for some delicious ice cream. We got a little turned around driving up so it ended up taking almost an hour and a half to get there (usually it only takes about 20 min.)!!! But, it was worth it, we had been wanting to get there again before we're back in school.
We also got a smoothie maker on Saturday. So Erika and I have been having fun experimenting with that, we've had some intresting combination ideas! I'll bet all of you Juice Stop addicts could have some fun making up your own flavors, maybe you could give Erika some suggestions, beacuse last night she said she wanted to make a smoothie with her left over steak!
Well, I should probably get off now. Erika just came inside from a rather traumatic experience that she wants to tell you all about.
Oh, almost forgot -- Have a super duper first day of 3rd grade tomorrow Tristen!!

Lots of movie watching around here. It has been nice to have the time off. Today I go into the career center to get some guidance on my job search. It has not officially begun yet, but hopefully soon. (I am waiting for my graduation to post to my transcript.) It has rained here nonstop this weekend. We did absolutely nothing yesterday, but watch the two movies & take our computer into Best Buy. The DVD Rom/Burner hasn't worked for a while, so it is in the shop. We have yet to finish laundry, but other than that we are all unpacked. Tristen has been with Kennedy all weekend. She went there Saturday at 1, then came back here at 6:30 with Kennedy & she spent the night here. Then they went back to Kennedy's Sunday at noon & she has been there ever since. I go pick her up this morning after my appointment. Then a few things to do today to get ready for school tomorrow! She is excited. I think once we get this first day over with it will be a breeze.
Marsha-- I remember your posting, maybe the webmaster misplaced it, because I remember reading it. It said something about Anna missing Juice Stop already.
Olivia-- Did you have fun in KC this weekend? I want to hear all about it! And write Hagel anytime, I will send Lindsey the address.

My apologies. Marsha's note of the 11th did get dropped, but it is restored now, below. --Gary

Hi. I just saw that a letter I wrote last week never made it through! So, thanks to everyone for taking such great care of Anna all summer! She had an awesome time and is ready to come right back. Amanda's party at Lori and Paul's was very nice! John and I went to a Circus on Friday that was amazing... Circus Juventas teaches young people acrobatics, trapeze, etc. and they did a production with a Celtic fairy theme. We thought all the dancers in the family would have loved it and T & t would have been super impressed with the dancing and flying fairies.

Hey Karen -- we brought back the buffet from the basement that Grandma Lipskey gave me. Paul and Ryan kindly loaded it up for me in the van the day before we left. It looks great in the dining room!

    Amanda
    8/13/05
We did leave Grandma's at about 4:20. We drove through awful fog for the first two hours, and then rain for the next two hours! We made good time. Much better than when we came in July. We made two stops, one for breakfast & gas at about 8 in Kansas. Another for gas & lunch in Oklahoma. We hit Wichita Falls at 2PM & Tristen & I went to Wal-Mart. We made a quick run through for school supplies & headed home. We helped unpack a little & then her & I got in the shower. We were to the school by 5. Her teacher this year is Mrs. Moore. She has quite a few friends in her class. She is ready to start on Tuesday. Today she is going to Kennedy's at 1 & then they are coming back here to spend the night. Then back to Kennedy's tomorrow & spending the night there Sunday. Back home on Monday to prep for school! We are not unpacked yet, but should be by this afternoon. We have A LOT of laundry to do, so that will consume our weekend. I have an appointment on Monday at the career center & then I will begin my job search. Karen-- if we don't move to North Dakota (which is looking HIGHLY unlikely) we will go back to Nebraska. It will hopefully be in May or June of 2006. But, if I don't find a decent job & we can't make ends meet once Ryan is unemployed in December we will have to go back then. If Ryan turns down the orders to report to ND he will be out of the military sometime in December. Let me tell you, he is loving the idea of being a free man! Oh, when we got back to Iowa Park Ryan rushed out of here to go to the post office before it closed. I asked him what the rush was, he told me he needed to tell them "he was back" and didn't want to waste a week & got lots of crap for it! We miss Juice Stop!!

Hey everybody! Well, the doors are finally in!! They were supposed to come at 8 yesterday morning, but didn't show until 1 or 2. Then they were missing some parts and had to come back this morning and finish up for about an hour. But, they are all done now and look really nice. Mom took some before and after pictures and sent them in this afternoon, so you can see them then!
Sounds like Metcalfs had an early start this morning! I'll bet you all enjoy having your own bed tonight!

See the doors (before and after!) on the projects page. I understand the Metcalfs left this morning between 4 and 4:30 am, and got home around 2 pm. I was at Grandma's this evening (helping with the installation of her new Tivo-like DVR--digital video recorder) when Tristen called. They had already unpacked everything, been to a teacher's conference and met Tristen's new teacher, and bought school supplies! Tristen said she and Teghan had slept most of the way home. Grandma's house seemed really quiet today! Even though it had been six weeks, I heard Tristen say last night "It seemed like only one day." :-) --Gary

Well said our good-byes tonight, sad to see everyone leaving! But had a GREAT summer and did a lot of fun stuff, lots of cool pictures. Congratulations again Amanda on your graduation! I'm already looking forward to seeing everyone again :).

Thanks to everyone for our great time in Lincoln. (Especially for everything you did for Anna Banana!) We had a nice ride home with a good stop in Clear Lake, Iowa, what a lovely town (and they have a Culvers). John, Zach, Sam and Sunny were all glad to see Anna. So, Erika, did Willy the door guy get the doors in? You and Emily were way too good on the game we played with Gary. Mom the buffet looks so good in the dining room. I bought a little bouquet of flowers for it at work today. John has been feeling pretty good. We had a big rain and thunderstorm yesterday -- 4 houses and a man were struck by lightning! I really can't imagine North Dakota in January!!!! I think that is a sign saying NOOOOOOOO! T & t will all of your toys fit in the truck? Linz and Liv, thanks for taking such good care of Anna (she's craving a Juice Stop right now.) Gary, I will get the recipes up soon, I hope. Donna, how about some pictures when you get your rooms finished, are you getting another blue chair?

Well the door guys finally showed up -- only 5 1/2 hours late. But they are installing them now and should be done in a few hours. We have been getting lots of rain, pretty nice today, except for the humidity. Amanda, Ryan -- if you don't go to ND what are your plans?? That wouldn't be any farther from Lincoln than Texas is. Marsha, what furniture did you take to MN? Oh, all of you Google Earth fans, I heard on the news today that it's a possible risk to the the soldiers. People are able to see where they are stationed.

Yeah, don't get me started on this Google Earth flap. That's all we need, to get the government involved in it, in the name of "homeland security." These pictures are several years old usually, and available in many other ways, so if a terrorist wants to figure out where a base is... oh, grrrrr, don't get me started!! --Gary

I have been asked to make three additions to our recipes page, of dishes that we all enjoyed sometime in the past week. We need Marsha's corn and black bean salad, Marsha's spinach-artichoke dip, and Lori's cowboy beans. If they happen to be secret family recipes, hey, we're all family! Thanks in advance.

Glad to hear Marsha and Anna had a good trip home!
Sounds like Metcalfs are still having a blast in Lincoln. It will be pretty quiet around there you all go back home! But, hey if you do move to North Dakota at least you would be closer to everyone than you are in Texas.
I just checked out the reviews, looks like some good ones. I still want to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, maybe while its still in the theaters. And Wedding Crashers looks like a good on to rent when it comes out. I would definitely recommend Spellbound to everyone, it was a good one!
Not too much has been going on around here. We had a "movie day" yesterday, just watched a bunch of old movies we had, but it was fun. Tomorrow we are having the new doors installed. Well, assuming the carpenter guy doesn't wash his hands! :) (for those of you who didn't hear the story, Erika took the message when they called to set up the appointment for the doors, and the guy calling said he would have called sooner, but he wrote the number on his hand and took a bath.)
So we're hoping that goes well!
We're still getting stuff ready for school. Only 2 more weeks of summer vacation left!! This summer has really gone by quickly!!

    New Photos are up!

And have you read the reviews lately...? Thanks to Lindsey, Emily, Erika, and Amanda who are all recent contributors!

Sean, I'm just now reading your newsletter item and the links. That's very impressive. And for those of you that haven't seen the product, I can tell you it's really cool. I would love to have that in my car. Congratulations!

    8/10/05
Today's picture reminds me--I haven't seen any of the stuff you guys painted. Anna I missed yours, but I want to see the rest of them. They look really nice.
Anna and Marsha, it's so quiet and boring without you here. Marsha, I still love all the changes we made to my dining room and living room. It looks so much better! I plan to cover the dining room chairs and sew kitchen curtains this weekend. That shouldn't take long. Especially since I already have the fabric. ;-)
The graduation party was really nice. That was a fun afternoon. I still can't believe I let Erika beat me at air hockey, though.

I'll be putting up some more pictures today that will include the pottery-painting. Check back later! --Gary

Hey everyone! I had such a FUN summer and it's weird to be back and have my room all to myself. Thank you so much everyone for everything this summer! I miss you guys a lot! Today I had my "interview" for Watershed. I think it went well and we are not sure when we will find out when I get in. I am already wanting Juice Stop. I hope that Amanda, Ryan, Tristen and Teghan have fun for the rest of their trip and have a safe ride home. Miss You Guys!

Tonight we were at Sean's & we hooked our laptop up to his fast DSL. I played around with Google Earth, way cool!!! Oh, and Ryan finally got his much awaited orders... Where is his next base you ask? Grand Forks, North Dakota. Probably will never make it there, but if we want to live there we can go by January 30th.

OK, now we are leaving Friday morning. But this is final, no changing these plans. Tristen has orientation at her new school Friday at 5. She will meet her new teacher, take in her supplies & buy a lunch ticket. Dinner at grandmas Thursday night, about 6:30! It's the last hurrah!

Well, yesterday we had a lazy morning. Some of us didnt even wake up to see Anna & Marsha off. We were up until 3 the night before playing a wild game of Monopoly. It had to be postponed until the next day! Anyhow, we finished the game, had Chipotle for lunch and took Linz to work at 2:30. Ryan, Teghan & I then headed to Omaha. We went to Oakview for some shopping. Teghan built a "bear." She made a unicorn & named it princess. We hung out at Oakview until about 5:30. Then we drove to Nebraska Furniture Mart where we met Dad, Lori, Linz, Livy, Tristen & Sean. We got a fax machine & looked for a table. Then we went to the new mall, Village Point. The 4 girls went on the ferris wheel at Scheel's. We went to a few other stores, but it was close to closing time. Then we went to Tin Star, a southwestern restaraunt. Our table got cheesesteak fajitas, quesadillas, cheeseburger tacos & a few other good things. It was a nice place. Then we split up & headed home at about 10. Ryan, Teghan & I took the long way home because we wanted to see the expansion in some of our old neighborhoods. Not much planned for today. Ryan went and got his drivers license renewed already this morning. We may play a game of Dogopoly later. Tristen is going to Livy's first soccer practice tonight...

Thanks to everyone for coming to the graduation party. I had a great time. Today is my actual graduation day!! It has not sunk in at all!

Very quick recap, and I know I'm leaving stuff out:
FRI: We went to Huhot Mongolian Grill for lunch which was lots of fun. From there we all split up for separate shopping trips, with Livy, Tristen and myself going first to Petco and next to Barnes & Noble, where Tristen bought a cool magic kit. We had Val's pizza that night. During dinner, Amanda reminded Lindsey to call Juice Stop to see when they closed; when Lindsey announced they closed in 15 minutes, there were suddenly three human-sized streaks shooting toward the door. The only evidence that Ryan, Anna, and Lindsey had ever been there were their half-eaten pizza slices -- one fork even had a morsel of food still stuck on it. :-)
SAT: This was Amanda's graduation party at Paul & Lori's. Great food, and an excellent magic show thanks to Tristen and her lovely assistant Olivia. Karen, Emily, and Erika arrived at Grandma's around 10:30, and after the party back at Grandma's we played a "who said this" game using lines from old newsletters.
SUN: Today started off with breakfast at the Green Gateau (Grandma, Gary, Marsha, Donna) which was excellent. Then a quick tour of the Sunken Gardens. A bit of shopping while Amanda, Ryan, T & T were at Amanda's other party; then a very nice finger-food evening meal after they came back (and Paul & Lori, Anna, and Livy arrived). Teghan kept us entertained with a blanket and a couple of balloons, and Tristen did a shortened version of her magic act. Lindsey arrived after closing up the Ice Cream Store, and she, Anna, and Livy stayed overnight at Grandma's. Marsha and Anna take off for MN first thing tomorrow morning -- have a nice easy drive! And it was great having you here this summer, Anna!

    New pictures today!

Hey everybody! We had a fun time in Lincoln yesterday. We got home around 11, so a long day and were tired this morning! But, it was nice to see everyone again!
Dad got us a new volleyball net while we were gone, so we put that up this afternoon and Erika and I have been playing with it for awhile. But it way too hot now, back into the 90, I hope it cools down soon!
Sean, sounds like you've got some good projects going on. Hope it keeps going well!
Have a good trip home tomorrow Marsha and Anna!
    And again, congrats to Amanda!

Thanks again for coming down here, you guys! :-) ...But, home around 11?? You must have stopped somewhere for dinner, and had really sloooow service...? --Gary

Here's a little something I have been working on for a while. After I purchased my car (1995 Chevy Caprice for those of you who haven't seen it) and my "radio" I came up with this idea for a product. It is to relocate an aftermarket radio into the upper cavity in the car's dash where the heater/ac controls are located from the factory. It puts the controls down below where the radio was. Actually I didn't come up with the idea. A few people have been relocating their radios like this in these cars, but with cutting, glueing, and making brackets and whatever else. Taking many hours and tools to do so, many people wouldn't attempt it. A customer told me he had a stereo shop look at doing the modification for him. They wanted $60 and hour and wouldn't tell him how long it would take. He found my product and it does just what he wanted, and he can easily install it himself, for a fraction of the bill and time he would have had. My kits bolt with no cutting or anything. Just read the E-bay page for details. I did all the measuring using my car, and made a few templates, I hired my work to draw it out in AutoCAD (a computer aided drafting program, I'm teaching myself to use!) for me, and program it for our CNC laser cutters. I put in an order for a batch of them, they cut them out (batches in intervals of 7 parts), I weld them up, and take them to our powdercoating building for a special, very hard, baked-on paint. I throw in the necessary washers, screws, and bolts, wrap them up and throw them in a box along with a few pages of basic instructions and drop them off to the good people at UPS. People have been loving them! I have sold many outside of E-bay through An Impala/Caprice website I am on. People have been very supportive and they have used a lot of word of mouth to other Impala/Caprice owners about my product. I have sold about 20 so far in the past 3 months. I put a big batch of them together, they are waiting in my garage to get shipped out. I have about 3 minutes of my time total in each one, plus ten minutes to stop in at ups on my way home from school. They have paid for the "radio" I have installed in the car! It was very trying on me getting these kits fabbed up while in school and working. Almost cost me failing my Art History class! All of my free time was gone for nearly two weeks and had to drive my car with the dash taken apart for a while!

Check my feedback. Much of my feedback is from selling these kits, see what people have left for me, it's neat. The feedback can be found clicking on the number after my E-bay screen name, Bigchevytoys. It will say, for example ( I currently have 20 positive feedbacks, number will increase with more transactions) Bigchevytoys '20' Click on the "20" after my name to get to the feedback. [Or click here.]

Here's a link to one of the current auctions I'm running for these kits. Watch it and see what happens. It might sell tonight, or it might not sell. Either way, when they do, an extra tank of gas and food money is always nice!

Hi everyone yesterday I think was the hottest day all year the heat index at 6:00 P.M. was 111 degrees!!! When mom came in from checking on the outside kittens (T.J. Napoleon and (Mr.) Debbie) She said that the kitties were dying outside (not actually). So we moved them out of the tin shed (probably not a good place for them) into the garage. We gave them a big bowl of ice water, a rug, and a fan. They were a lot better; at least until the horrible rains came!!!!! It was so rainey, and thundery, lightingy and the lightning was just like a huge strobe light. The lightning honestly never stopped.
Earlier that day Emily and me spray-painted some of our patio chairs but when we went outside this morning they all had chips in the paint (because of the rain)!!!!!!! The picture on the page really makes me wish it was winter and we had snow but maybe not that much I remember that Dad left for work and a couple minutes later he called us and said he was stuck at the end of the block there he was with the help from some people driving by we got out he got by the next corner fine but he didn't get back home so went down to the other corner myself and thats where the picture was taken! In that picture I didn't even see myself in it at first but right behind the truck in my white coat!!!

Erika, be sure and check the picture tomorrow! :-) And I think you were also in Monday's picture -- wasn't that you by the back door...? --Gary

    Entertainment news:
  • There will be an "Indiana Jones 4"! Harrison Ford has agreed to do it, Spielberg has approved a script, and the writers are tweaking it now. It will be a Summer 2007 release.
  • They are doing a remake of "The Omen," to be released on June 6, 2006 (6-6-6, get it??). Most of the roles have been cast, but they're still looking for the "world's creepiest boy" to play the devil-child, Damien. Know anybody...?
  • Filming is going on right now for "The Producers," the musical version of the Mel Brooks movie. This one stars Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, and will be in theaters in December 21.

Gary, another great picture and quote! Snow week must be working--it's supposed to be a cool day! Woohoo! And it's the Husker's first day of practice. Ah, fall can't be far away.

Thanks. My thermometer yesterday read 105 degrees, though "officially" I don't think it got that hot. (It read 69 degrees this morning, a difference of 36 degrees in little more than 12 hours.) But anyway, I am predicting here and now that we have seen the last 100-degree day this year. And yeah, football: four weeks from this Saturday is our first game. So just hang on, everybody! --Gary

Wow I had to catch up on my reading for the newsletter. Hadn't been able to get on the computer for a while but Ryan came over early today and worked on our computer all day and now we can access the internet. But we had a fun day, between pancakes, park, and twister. Then Ryan went and picked up Amanda and they came back over and hung out here. Then Amanda, me, and Anna made another Juice Stop trip (third day in a row and still going) for everybody here. Then we came back and watched some TV and then headed over to the County Fair when my mom and dad got home. That was pretty fun, saw some animals and crafts and then went on some rides (got some pictures I think) and then came home and ordered Val's pizza and hung out for a while. Pretty fun day!

Yes, as far as I know, Marsha will be here tomorrow afternoon. I hope Emily decides to come. Eyes of the World is having their anniversary sale if that will tempt her at all. ;-) Please come Emily!

Amanda, those are real falls. In fact I think that the city even had to "tame" them down a bit. I have been enjoying the snow pictures this week -- especially since it's been so grossly hot. Another fairly quiet week for us. We did rent a really good movie yesterday: Spellbound. Think Lincolnites would enjoy that for a Saturday night movie. So does Marsha get to Lincoln tomorrow? We are planning to come on Saturday. Brent is staying home and Emily is still deciding, but probably will come too.

Just finally getting to the bonus pictures. What neat falls! Nicer than Wichita's Falls' falls! Are those real, or man made? Cool cool, what a day you had. Today I had my last Tuesday as an intern. A pretty uneventful day. I got off an hour early & Ryan & I went to Chipoltle (for the first time) to grab some lunch before we all went to Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. Then home for hanging out & dinner.

Yesterday's front page picture was a nice one. Do you think it will ever be cold enough to snow again? It was 80 degrees with 59% humidity at 5 this morning and it's supposed to get to 100 today. Yuck. But we have our first Husker game in a few weeks, I think. Fall can't be that far away. Great picture of Livy today. I don't remember seeing that one before. Gary, nice job selecting the quotes to the pictures--both today's and yesterday's were especially good.
Emily, Seven Years in Tibet is one of my favorite movies. That's one movie I could watch any time. I really should own it.

I love the front page picture! Its nice to see some snow, since its getting hot and back into the 90s around here.
Gary, we were wanting to rent some movies, and I kinda wanted to see the one that you brought over last time we were in Lincoln, that we never got to watch. But we can't remember what it was called, the one about Tibet. Do you remember what it was?

Yeah, nice to see some snow indeed! That picture was from just last year, and was an actual snow-day. The movie was called "Tibet: Cry of the Snow Lion" and I thought it was going to be a kind of nature film about Tibet's mountains and wildlife, etc. However, it turned out to be about Tibet's troubled recent history, and therefore was full of scenes of rioting, etc. Interesting, perhaps, but not what I was expecting. So it may not be the movie you were expecting, either. You might instead want to watch "Seven Years in Tibet," a 1987 movie with Brad Pitt that tells the true story of an Austrian mountaineer's experiences there. Good movie! --Gary

Sounds good Gary... Ryan did get in at about 1 Sunday & we went to Metcalfs for about 2 hours then out to get Tristen from the lake. (She camped overnight with my mom) We were going to come back to town to eat with my dad for Sean's birthday, but Sean had other arrangements, so we stayed out at the lake. It was a nice day. We went for a boat ride at 10:30, which was amazing, we could see more stars that you would ever hope to see in town! It was great. Today everyone slept in, Teghan & Ryan are just now getting up at 10! And I smell bacon wafting up the stairs, so I better go investigate!

Lots happening here lately, but no updates... people are busy! (Also, I haven't received any email all day today -- even junk mail, which is very unusual -- so maybe there's a problem and your newsletter items are held up somewhere...) Anyway, I can fill in some of the blanks: On Friday some of us went to the movies. We went the the Grand, where one group (Amanda, Anna, Lindsey) went to "The Wedding Crashers" and the other group (Grandma, Gary, Donna, Olivia, Tristen, Teghan) went to "March of the Penguins." Reviews of each will probably show up here soon. After the movie we all went to Noodles & Co. for a fun meal, and after that next door to Starbucks for coffee. (Or in my case an ultra-chocolatey drink called a "Chantico" -- wow! Excellent!) Saturday night, Lindsey, Olivia, and Anna were over at Grandma's for spaghetti and a movie ("Merchant of Venice"). My car was acting weird, so Donna kindly supplied all the transportation. Sunday, I hear Ryan arrived around noon, and they were at Metcalfs (I think) most of the day. That's the general picture of the weekend!

Meanwhile, hope you enjoy the "Snow Days" pages this week. The last of the zoo pictures are now up, and some bonus pictures on a separate page. Happy August, everybody!
