Had a fun weekend in KC. Saw Pirates of the Caribbean 3. Very good movie! Then went shopping and got a lot of cool stuff. If you're ever in Overland Park, check out Zona Rosa! One of the prettiest, neatest malls I've been to. We also went to a Kansas City Royals game where they played the Seattle Mariners. Fun to go to that too!

It looks like Olbermann may have mentioned Bush's secret directive Friday night. I missed his show. Did anyone catch it? Here's a link where they mention it as a story they were working on. Read some of the blog comments. I think people are (finally) starting to get fed up.

First, sorry it took me so long to post this -- I've been away from my computer all afternoon. Second, no, I didn't see it. My pseudo-TiVo decided to stop recording Olbermann for some reason. I only noticed it after missing Friday's and Monday's shows. Dang! (Thanks again for the great service, Cablevision!) But I'll start checking YouTube for that segment -- should show up there soon. And hey, don't miss Olbermann tonight -- his guest is Al Gore. Olbermann's also going to report on Cindy Sheehan leaving the Democratic Party in protest over their war-funding vote. Which is a shame, but I can't blame her. Anyway, thanks for the heads-up and the above link! --Gary

Donna and I were talking last night about the "warm" reception Andrew Card (one of the early Iraq war planners and White House Chief of Staff until he resigned a few months ago) got at the University of Massachussetts commencement Friday night when they awarded him an honorary degree. I understand that the faculty later voted unanimously to revoke the degree -- though their vote was symbolic, and the degree stands. Anyway, here's a four-minute sample of the evening:

We are heading to Kansas City in the morning for the weekend for my Mom's birthday. We're going to a Royal's baseball game tomorrow at one and then staying overnight. Thinking about catching a movie that night (Pirates of the Carribean 3 maybe?) and then shopping at Zona Rosa on Monday. Should be a nice weekend trip.

A few more words on the Democratic cave-in, and then I promise to shut up.

Among the 37 Democratic senators who voted "yes" on the funding bill (out of 51 total -- only 14 voted "no," and most of them [including Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama] did so after the bill was a sure thing and a "no" vote was safe) were presidential contender Joe Biden (talks big, but...), Dianne Feinstein (prominent critic of Bush, but...), Nebraska's own Ben Nelson (what else? He's a DINO: Democrat In Name Only), and surprisingly three newcomers who were voted in with the "Democratic sweep" last November: Milkuski of Missouri (she was helped by the Michael J. Fox TV ad), Tester of Montana ("the liberal with the conservative haircut"), and Webb of Virginia (who narrowly won against George "Macaca" Allen). Sorry for that long sentence! :-)

What were they thinking? On his website, Webb explained himself (I'm paraphrasing): "We didn't have enough votes in the Senate to overturn a veto by Bush, so we may as well vote for it so the troops get the money they need." But one commentator (kos of DailyKos) nailed him on this: "Webb, like most of his colleagues, bought into the b.s. right-wing frame that voting against this supplemental was voting against our troops. And the congressional Democrats were wholly incapable of making the ridiculously simple observation that they were funding the troops, it was Bush who was vetoing that money."

The Democrats lost because they let Bush define the terms: "It's not about me fighting an illegal war, it's about the Democrats not supporting the troops!" The Democrats are still afraid of Bush, and still afraid of the names the Republicans might call them. Pathetic!

Even so, I haven't given up on them, as there is still a lot they can do -- IF they work up the courage to, and IF Bush doesn't declare himself Dictator before that happens. The problem for them, though, is that they will have to do all that, PLUS regain the trust of the voters who put them in office.... Tall order.

Twice now in the past few days, since the Washington Democrats surrendered to Bush and gave him a blank check, I have been called and asked for money -- once by the Democratic Party and once by the Obama campaign. Here's what I told them both: "I am a life-long Democrat, but I have decided to withhold funding the Democratic Party until certain benchmarks are met -- like JUST ONCE standing up to Bush!" Click. Felt good!

Jon Stewart described the Democrats' strategy like this: "You are NOT going out until you finish your homework! ...unless you want to go out."

Al Gore's waiting game (I hope that's what it is) is working: If he announced his candidacy today, all the other Democrats would just disappear... as would the Republicans. If you're reading this, Al, ANNOUNCE! :-)

Gore got off a good line a few days ago. Chief White House Liar Tony Snow made this comment about Gore's book: "I don't know if they're going to do a reprinting of the book to try to get the facts straight. The fact-checkers may have to take a look at it." To which Gore responded: "This book, unlike the President's State of the Union Address, has been fact-checked."

Time Magazine did a great photo essay on Gore recently -- check it out here on their website. (Cool office, Al! [picture 20])

Coast to Coast had Jerome Corsi on the show this morning talking about this presidential directive. You can go here to read more about it.

Jerome credited Coast to Coast as being the first to break the Dubai Port story and he hopes the same thing will happen here. I haven't heard this story anywhere else yet. I only saw the last of Olbermann last night. Has he mentioned it yet?

The Corsi story is the one I linked to below. So far, that's the only place I've seen that mentions this -- other than the White House page, which printed the full text of the directive with no comment. It is being discussed a little in the Democratic "underground" -- like here on the GOTV site -- but nobody in the so-called "mainstream media" (or M$M as the cool crowd calls it) has mentioned it. But then, they didn't make any noise when Bush stole two elections; and they cheered when Bush started an illegal war...so why make a fuss about his plan to become dictator? --Gary

I'm sure graduation will go well, even if it doesn't you will have fond memories. I remember mine very well, even after 63 years. A guy in my class got up to speak and kicked over a big bouquet of flowers that sat on the floor in front of us, much to the amusement of the audience. However, he is the only one in our class to become a millionaire at a pretty early age. You never know. Have fun!!!

Well I just got home from graduation practice. It wasn't nearly as long or bad as everyone was expecting it to be. Hopefully the program will go well tonight too!

Sounds like everyone had a fun time in Lincoln last weekend. I wish I could have been there!

We missed ya! --Gary

Gary

Hey, in case you missed it -- and you may well have, as none of the major media even mentioned it -- Bush has made it official: He is now King of America. Earlier this month, he signed into law a directive that gives him complete control over all branches of federal, state, and local government, whenever he wants it. You'd think that would have made the papers, but no. Only a few independent internet watchdogs have mentioned it.

If you think I'm kidding, read this. (Complete text of the actual directive here, on the official White House site.)

Normally I would have regarded this as just one more example of Bush's lunacy that would be corrected by impeaching him, or at least replacing him at the next election. But after yesterday, I think he may well get away with it. Yesterday, after calling Bush "the worst president in history," Jimmy Carter fell all over himself to rapidly retract the comment. Also yesterday, the Democratic cowards in Congress completely caved in and gave Bush a blank check for the war. So I'm not really expecting anyone in Washington to stand up against Bush any more -- they will wag their fingers and reprimand him, but they won't do anything. And the way is now clear for Bush to ignore -- or abolish -- Congress any time he wants to. Just use any occurrence for an excuse -- another hurricane, another school shooting, or even a protest march in the streets -- and the Decider makes himself the Emperor. Abolish the November elections? He can do it. Stay in office past 2009? He can do it. Imprison anyone he wants without a trial and without seeing a lawyer, for as long as he wants? ...Oh wait, Congress already gave him the power to do that last year....

Why didn't the media cover this seizure of power? Because they weren't ordered to! Note that the White House did not issue a press release -- meaning the talking-head news-readers had nothing to read! So therefore, nothing happened -- leaving them free to cover the big stories like American Idol and Paris Hilton. Bread and circuses.... (See the Latin page, Part 2 if you don't know what that refers to.) Sorry for this cheerful note; I'm a little depressed today! :-)

Hey everybody! Well today was kind of fun! We went out to eat at Old Chicago's and that was very fun! I had some chicken noodle soup for an appetizer, and then I had chicken alfredo for my main dish! We played pool a lot of the time! Erika, Tristen and me, we all played like 3 or 4 games of pool! It was very fun! Then we all went over to Grandma's house and stayed over there for a few hours. Tonight I am staying over at Amanda's. Then in the morning we are going to go over to Grandma's for breakfast! I heard that Sean is going over there too, and he is bringing Leah! Well I guess I will talk to you all later!!!

We will be heading to Lincoln about noon today -- should be there about 3. Thought I would clarify that we will be at the downtown Old Chicago (I just realized that there are two). Also be sure to come to Mom's before if you would like a piece of cake with us. Amanda -- how about a house tour Sunday morning before we leave for SC? See you all soon.

Hey everybody! Well nothing much really today, except school!!! But besides that, nothing much really. I am over at Amanda's right now though. Except in science, we have to do a project and we have to do it about a biome. I am doing the neritic zone. It's like the beach, but not too far into the ocean, but there is some water (like where crabs and maybe a little bit of coral are!) I had a small aquarium and I put real sand in it, and then I put water in it, and I also added some blued food coloring into it so it is kind of blue, and it's really cool! Everyone in my class said that they liked it a lot, and it really looks like ocean water with the food coloring! Then my friend brought in some little plastic toys so I used some of those. I have like two seaweed things, and an octapus, a crab, lobster, shark, turtle, and a dolphin. Then they told me to put like a little boat in there so it can float on the top! I think it's pretty cool! Then I just cut out some paper for a coral reef around the outside! So I will try and get a picture or two of it!!! Well I gotta go, so I will talk to you all later!!!

Anyone else surprised with this week's Idol? I haven't followed it much this year & I don't really have a favorite, but I thought Melinda was good, though I got a little tired of her facial expressions sometimes, they were always exxagerated. And I think I'm the only one in the world who doesn't really care for Jordin. So, on that note I guess I hope Blake wins. I was suprised at Elliot Yamin's new look. And Maroon 5, one of the guitarists, James Valentine, graduated in my class & we loosely hung out in the same crowd, and he surprised me with his look... (Long hair is not becoming on him, especially when front man Adam Levine is crew cut & gets all the attention anyway)

Glad you like the Latin stuff. I plan to space them out -- every week or so -- but note that I put Part 3 up just now. (I'm going to be in all-day meetings at work for the rest of this week, so I figured I'd put the next installment up now.) No hurry -- take your time with 'em! :-)

Those of you who have already read Part 2 might want to look at it again. I tweaked it a little bit and made the explanation of the letter J a bit clearer, hopefully.

Hey, has everyone seen the new Hillary Clinton ad featuring Bill Clinton? (It's like five minutes long, so it's not really a commercial-type ad I don't think.) But it's really good. Watch it and be reminded how a real President sounds....

So, I'm in my car yesterday driving down the street, and I stop at a stoplight. A city bus pulls up beside me on the right and stops too. My passenger-side window is down, and through it I see the bus driver lean out his window and bend down to look through. Over the traffic noise he shouts with a grin, "Hang on! It's only one more year til 2008!" Ah, my "Impeach Bush" ribbon, right! I shout back, "That's too long!"

It's funny, even though this is a "red state," I've had lots of positive responses to that ribbon. And only one negative one. (Somebody took the magnetic ribbon off my bumper, tore it into little pieces, and stuck the pieces to the car hood. I now display the ribbon on the inside of the back window.) Anyway, it makes you wonder if this state is really as "red" as the media tells us...

And speaking of politics, which one of the declared candidates is closest to your positions? Here's an interesting quiz that will tell you. Give it a try! It's easy, and short. (Turns out I'm closest to Kucinich, but he's a real longshot -- I'm holding out for Gore to declare.)

Happy Friday -- it was a good day for me. Enjoyed my day off. 2000 cool sites -- WOW!! That's impressive. Not sure about the Latin lessons -- but should be fun to try them out. I've been thinking that a game or something on the page would be good. Doesn't seem to be as active as usual.

I've got the first two ready right now, so I guess without further ado I'll put them up. (The first one is kind of short, so I'll put both up at the same time.) I figure a new installment every week or so. I have no idea how many there will be or where this is going to lead, but at least I've got two done! Enjoy, if possible! --Gary

5/11/07
Happy Friday to everyone. We've reached a milestone of sorts on this webpage, as today we add our 2000th cool site to the list. (We began this way back on January 2, 2001.) Don't miss today's cool site. It is, as the name suggests, cool!

In other webpage news, look for a new feature soon. By popular demand (well, one person asked for this, and I assume others would too but they're too shy), I will be starting a summer-school series of Latin lessons! (Not Latin dancing -- the Latin language.)

Don't worry, it will be an easy course. No studying, no homework, no quizzes, no grades. But by the end of the summer, you will be measurably smarter than you are now!

I am on the start of a three day week-end! All the kids are going to a track and field event tomorrow and I get the day off. Planning to do very little. Erika had a fun day today -- she and her class got to go see Spiderman 3. In about 10 days she also gets to go to Adventureland. Should help to make up for her afternoon. The temp must be close to 90 and her PE teacher made them run the mile. Poor girl was dragging!! Emily's day wasn't too bad either. She took one of her two AP tests. Had to be at the school at 7:45 and she wasn't done til 1. So it was a long day for her. Just another week of school and she is done!! Her prom was last Saturday, didn't get too many details, but I think she had a good time -- didn't get home til 5 and slept all day Sunday. Looks like Brents party is beginning to take shape. He is looking forward to it. Erika will be with us, but Emily will have to work. I was thinking that Erika would go back with Grandma after dinner. I'm afraid he is also having a tough day. He has been dragging for about two weeks now. We think he was getting dehydrated. Should be at the doctor now seeing if that's it. If it is he will be back in hospital for a few hours getting a bag of fluid.

We've enjoyed this weeks front pages. Erika has especially liked looking at them.

Glad you like 'em. It may not be "everybody's" idea of "humor," but it sure makes me laugh. (And Erika!) :-) --Gary

Amanda said she and Ryan saw a vulture last night in (I think) Crete having dinner in the middle of the road. I was telling someone at work about it. She lives in my neighborhood and she said she sees them all the time. She says they fly in a group of about ten or so. I've never noticed them before and you'd think they'd be hard to miss.

These quotation mark pictures are funny. They remind me of Joey from Friends when he said "I don't even know what this means," doing the air quotes.

Eighty firefighters from Lincoln are going to Greensburg today to help out. And the governor of Kansas says she plans to talk to Bush about the lack of National Guards available to help our country. He's visiting Greensburg today.

And Cheney will be in the Middle East this week.

Gary
5/7/07
The tornado that hit Greensburg, Kansas, over the weekend was an F5 (most severe category) and nearly two miles wide. See this site for some pictures. The governor of Kansas is saying that immediate aid and rebuilding is hampered by the fact that more than half of the state's National Guard and its equipment is in Iraq. Article here. (I guess we shouldn't call it "National Guard" any more; it can't guard the nation if it's fighting in Iraq.) The article says there were a few soldiers in Greensburg, though -- looting....

I guess it was Time's "according to the people"... don't know if that's the same one..?

Ah! That's the public opinion poll they ran to accompany the list put together by Time's editors (here). I'm a little surprised Bush even made the public opinion list, but you're right: there he is at #97. (Note that Sanjaya came in at #3!) I understand the right-wing talkshow robots (like Sean Hannity on Fox, for example) were full of outrage yesterday that Time neglected to add their beloved Fuehrer to the list. :-) --Gary

So, I gave blood for the first time today at my school! It was really a spur of the moment thing. You were supposed to sign up yesterday for it and go at a certain time but I had no idea they were even coming. Anyways I was in my math class and one of my friends was going down there so I went with him. At first they weren't going to let me go because they weren't really taking walk-ins but then decided to just let me go. So we filled out all the paperwork, waited for an hour (!), and then finally went in. It was a different experiance, especially when hospital-type beds are set up in the pool hallway of your school! But they finger pricked me, asked me questions and got me set up and did it. I'm not too squirmish with needles but it's always kind of nerve-wracking your first time. The needles are huge though! I was kind of suprised! I gave a pint and then got some juice and cookies. I was fine through the whole thing up until the very second they took the needle out of me and then I got kind of light-headed but they said that's just because of my weight and so had me eat and then I could leave. It kind of feels good to do that!

Donna, WIT is Western Iowa Tech Community College, I got a deal from them to take a class for free so I thought it would be a good idea to do some. I am taking an ethics and a spanish class this summer.
I don't really have much planned for graduation. I didn't want a party and don't really have time for a trip. But, I'm sure there will be plenty of other parties to go to and seniors have prom on Saturday.
I really don't miss the interviews, now that I am out of MYC... I have done plenty.

I'm glad you'll be going to UNL. Hopefully we'll get to see you more often.

Happy May Day everybody!! That means I only have 11 days left of high school forever!! The 14th is my last official day, then finals on the 15th and 16th. But, I will have to go back on the 17th to finish my finals since my AP Psych test is on the 16th... which I am not too happy about. Graduation is on the 23rd, and then I have about a week of vacation before my classes at WIT start... So work and school will be about it for my summer plans, until the 1st & 2nd of July when we should be coming down to Lincoln to register for classes. Does anybody else have any fun summer things planned yet??
It has been feeling like summer around here lately, yesterday was in the 90s! We even got to have my AP English class outside today.
Erika had a fun birthday weekend. She had some friends spend the night on Friday and we all went shopping Saturday and Erika bought an ipod with some of her birthday cash. But, I'm sure she will tell you more about it later.

I did read those yesterday, but didn't connect it with "mission accomplished." Yeah, stupid Chris Matthews. What a jerk. Stupid Judy Woodruff, Joe Scarborough...

I like that the Democrats in the Senate delivered the funding bill to Bush today, on the "mission accomplished" anniversary. Kinda puts a spotlight on things. I just heard that Bush has asked for airtime tonight at 5 pm our time. I doubt it's to announce he's going to sign the bill.... Rather, he will shake his finger at Congress (and the 70% of us who support that bill) and lecture us on 9/11 and how the terrorists will follow us home if we leave Iraq. Either that, or he's going to announce that he's going to start bombing Iran. Or that he's going to round up all the Democrats and other traitors and send 'em to Gitmo. Who knows? --Gary

Today is the 4th anniversary of "mission accomplished" in Iraq.

I hope you got to read our front page yesterday; lots of quotes from the war-cheerleaders in the press, from four years ago... kinda sickening. If anyone missed it, you can still see it here. (Be sure to scroll down past the cartoon for more -- like this gem from Chris Matthews, exactly four years ago today: "We're proud of our president. Americans love having a guy as president, a guy who has a little swagger, who's physical, who's not a complicated guy like Clinton or even like Dukakis or Mondale, all those guys, McGovern. They want a guy who's president. Women like a guy who's president. Check it out. The women like this war. I think we like having a hero as our president. It's simple. We're not like the Brits." Bleahh!! --Gary
