Happy New Year, Everyone!!!

Emily
12/30/07
Well, I'm pretty sure Tristen & I won't be able to get together for quite awhile. So, the list can be yours Tristen, good luck with it!
& Teghan, I love the High School Musical cake! :)

Well, I meant of course by email or phone -- just thought maybe you could give her some pointers as she wants to get involved with it. Still plenty of time: 361 days til Christmas! :-) --Gary

[LATER: Ooops! Had the wrong name (my own!) on this post for the past day. Now fixed. Sorry, Emily!]

Gary

Thanks to Teghan and Amanda for these new photos!

I don't actually have a program/system ready to go, just the desire to make one. But no solid ideas yet. So how about if Tristen and Emily team up and produce the list, if you're both OK with that?

A reminder that our front page will be getting a little makeover on January 1. On that date, the contact page will disappear, so if you need to copy down any of the info, do so before then.

Feel better Teghan, Tristen, and Ryan!

Thanks to everyone who came to Teghan's birthday party tonight. Grandma, I am so glad you crashed the party. Next time I will double check email addresses! Both Tristen & Teghan have ear infections. We had Teghan to the dr. on Thursday after we thought she had pink eye (it was actually such bad congestion that's where it came out) so they put her on an antibiotic. Then this morning Tristen told me her throat hurt & it looked red. Our pediatrician is open for 6 hours on Saturdays & 5 on Sundays so I was able to get her in. Not strep (according to the rapid test, still waiting on the long, culture growing test) but a "raging" ear infection as the dr. worded it. So, she is on an antibiotic too! Sheesh! The good news is, they haven't acted deathbed sick (no where near it, really). But, still sick. Ryan is getting a funny voice tonight, so I'm sure he's getting something.
Emily if you ever felt like passing on the reigns of the Christmas list, I know Tristen would love to do it. She is very "secretary-ish" sometimes. She loves to make lists, take drink orders, make place setting cards, etc. So, Gary, if you don't get the list program made & Emily if you are ready to give it up, Tristen would love to take over.
Anyhow, thanks again everyone for coming!

We had a really nice Christmas in SC too, & lots of nice gifts!
Amanda gave me a fun book of IQ tests & a B&N gift card that I put towards a new Sims game that I have been having a lot of fun with.
I got a fun picture coaster from Donna.
& a fun picture holder from Grandma, along with the Netflix which we all thought was a fun idea. We should be getting our first movie in the mail today!
& Gary, we love the message fan & the peanut men, they are both a lot of fun!
& I know its early, but I was wondering about the next year's xmas list. I've had fun putting it together the last few years & if nobody else is wanting to do it, I wouldn't mind doing it again...

Emily, I've been thinking about a system for doing the Christmas list, but don't have anything concrete yet. Could you give me a little time to work it out? Or maybe we could work on it together soon...? If I can't get a system to work, then you can do a list as usual. --Gary

12/29/07
Grandma, we got our first Netflix movie yesterday! That was fast. We haven't gotten time to watch it, maybe tonight after Teghan's little shin-dig, or more likely Sunday night. Thanks again, something to look forward to for 2 months after Christmas!
Gary

Okay, email is working again.
Gary
12/29/07
My apologies if anyone has sent an item to this page and it hasn't shown up yet. The UN-L email system has been down for about 24 hours now, so I am receiving nothing. The tech guys sent out a message saying they would be doing some routine maintenance, and the system would be down for "no more than an hour." Still not up, and nobody's answering the phones... Hopefully no mail is being lost, but to be on the safe side, you might want to wait until I give the "all clear" before sending in items. Sorry!

A big thank you to everyone. We had a couple of very nice Christmas's. Food was great, thank you Mom. I like the Briar Cliff Tee shirt, it will be unique for Lincoln. Thanks again.

12/26/07

Yes, thanks to everyone, though Donna was there when I got mine from her, Gary was there when Teghan got hers & Anna, you saw Tristen's reaction to the bacon wallet (and she can't wait to spend some Target money!) And Brent, we didn't know you were such a strong supporter of Briar Cliff, the t-shirts were aplenty at grandmas house. Ryan got his & his Twin Bing, though it took him a minute to figure that one out... Sioux City, ahh.... But mostly I wanted to get on here to tell Grandma that I signed up for Netflix & hope to get our first movie soon!

Happy December 26th. It was back to work for me. Christmas was really a beautiful day, we had snow falling all day long with no wind or traffic, it was a winter wonderland. Karen, I love the robe and slippers, thank you very much, it is so cozy!! Lori, John loves the gift card to Barnes & Noble, it is just perfect for him. Thanks for the Netflix and goodies Mom, we will sure enjoy that. "Gary Is Cool" how do I know? Our new fan says so. Thanks to Donna for the popcorn bowl and treats. We enjoyed the Christmas pictures you put up today Gary, especially the one of Tristen and her bacon wallet (yummy).

Thanks properly go to Donna and her new camera. :-) --Gary

We had a great day here too. I got a very nice reader from Brent and have been trying to learn how to use it. It will be great to take with me, and should save on the trips to the library.
Zach-- thanks again for the pretty bracelet - I love it!
Mom-- we will start the Netflix today and we will all enjoy the foods, the kitty candle is cute too
Donna-- the cat bowl is very fun -- the cocoa looks wonderful -- I have already ate most of the candies
Gary-- Love the fan! Brent worked on it and got a Happy New Year message on it -- in fact I think he maybe taking that to the office with him
We all got some gift cards this year and plan to go the mall and do some shopping this afternoon. Had all of the Nelsons here on Sunday and had a very nice day with them.

Hey, excellent Christmas this end -- waiting to hear reports from everybody else! :-)

Big thanks to Livy for gifting me with a great Italian meal in a basket. Can't wait to fix it! Thanks to the Nelsons for the jarful of goodies (in the convenient Chinese take-out box!) -- and to the Hatgidakis household for the cool desk-toy doodads which will make me the envy of every nerd at work. :-)

Tons of good food at Grandma's house today, and lots of fun when Lindsey, Livy, Sean, Teghan, and Tristen came over, bringing assorted parents with them.

(Oh, P.S.: No new front page tomorrow. I did make up pages taking us into the new year, but I left them on my computer at work. So it may be a day or two before I get over there and grab 'em. Also: Watch for a front page makeover, unveiling on January 1!)

Well, we did our Christmas baking... Everything went well. Glad to be done. Caramels were a disaster... And the cream cheese mints, Donna, NOT easy & wonderful. But, our winner was using the cookie press for spritz! The Easy Accent Decorator from Pampered Chef did not work at all. And your average plastic cookie press might not hack it either. We picked up a nice metal one once upon a time & it had the umph to press out the stiff mints. They are OK. They taste great, but come on. SO not easy & wonderful!

Wow, I had a lot of catch-up reading to do. Haven't been on the webpage (or the internet for that matter) for a long time.

Thank you for all the birthday wishes everyone. I had a pretty fun birthday. Started out at Cheesecake Factory in Omaha with Dad, Mom, and Liv in the afternoon and a little shopping. Then went out to eat with Matt and some friends at Grisanti's and then they had a surprise party for me at his house which was really fun.

I finished school Friday, will have finals when I go back in January. Then I will only have two classes, Anatomy & Physiology and Government & Politics. Should be a pretty easy schedule and that will allow me to work mornings at work since I'll get out early enough.

Pretty excited for Christmas too seeing all the lights and decorations!

Christmas Eve Eve! Hope you all enjoyed your sleep last night, on the longest night of the year. (Starting today, the days get longer....)

Two days ago, I stopped at the light at 33rd and Cornhusker, and a big truck pulled up behind me. From my side mirror, I saw the driver -- a big bearded guy in a blue shirt and vest, cowboy hat and sunglasses -- climb down from the cab and walk toward me. He tapped on my window and I opened up. I was expecting him to say something like, "Hey, buddy, you better get that tire looked at!" (I'm kinda paranoid about tires lately -- see October 8.) But instead he sticks a big paw in my face and says, "I want to shake your hand!" He gestured toward my "Impeach Bush" ribbons in my rear window and went on to say he was a Vietnam vet (had spent two years there) and was sickened to watch Bush "do the same d*** thing in Iraq!" We shook hands again, he got back in his truck, the light changed, and off we went.

Enjoy your Christmas Eve, everybody. It is quite possibly the best day of the whole year. :-)

All done with school for 12 days!! Had a fun (but crazy) day at school. Got lots of gifts from the kids and at the end of school everyone went out into the gym to sing Christmas songs and have apple cider and cookies. Nice way to end. Amanda -- I just checked my pineapple cookie recipe -- mine does have 1 tsp of bk soda. I was going to make some caramels for Brent tomorrow, but one of my gifts was a big jar of homemade caramels. We DID get the box today! Brent kindly offered to pick it up for me. He had in my car as I got out of school. Erika just unpacked the box and put everything under the tree. Thanks for sending it.

12/21/07
Amanda, I dug out Grandma Anderson's old original Pecan Pineapple recipe and it does not have soda listed, but I wonder if that was an error as it should have baking powder or soda, I'm pretty sure I put one or the other in them. What a hassle to get our box to you, Karen! Hope it is worth the effort. Sounds like there will be lots of caramels this year. I did make a batch yesterday, and Marsha was too. Carol and I had a fun day yesterday, we went to the Lodge for lunch, really good!! and shopped a few places, we went to Leon's for lingonberries and what a disappointment! But then we were too tired to trek on over to Ideal. Amanda, I think we will be happy to stop by tonite.
Amanda
12/21/07
Grandma, thanks for the recipe. Last night we made a few batches of the Chocolate Marshmallow Cookies. 4 actually. I am taking some to work & Ryan took over 50 to work (he requested 100!). You should have added a note that that was a messy recipe! The cocoa, oy!

Baking question for you, the Pineapple Pecan cookies -- the recipe you have on here doesn't have a listing for soda. It does take soda, right? I dug out a recipe I had & it has soda on there... Just wanted to make sure.

We are going to do some baking tomorrow, I hope it goes well. Then we start our Christmases on Sunday afternoon/night. Christmas Eve Eve we are calling it. My mom, Sean & Shelby are coming over. Then Monday I have off work (cough, cough, thanks President Bush, cough, choke) & we are doing Christmas Eve at our house with the Metcalfs. Then Christmas morning our first at the house! We are very excited! Then, I assume as usual we will go to Dad's & then over to grandmas. We will need to nail down some times, and I need to know if I should bring anything.

Grandma & Donna (and Gary of course, just don't know if you are into that kind of thing), if you aren't doing anything tonight come by our house after it's dark so you can see the lights outside & then come on in to see it decorated. I should have invited you over sooner, because tonight is really the last night we will be home alone to let you in! If you are busy, I understand. Let me know.

I don't think we are going to drive around & look at lights this year. We don't really have the time for it now, and I have come to the conclusion that not many people decorated because of the weather this year. I think if you did it early (like Ryan thankfully did) you were OK, but if you waited til December, you never got a chance. I just haven't noticed as much out this year.

I figured that it was just easier for you to send it Fed-Ex, and I usually think -- what does it matter. I don't really care to use them again. I think we just have a driver who maybe is a little overworked this time of the year and isn't into making any allowances. But it shouldn't be too difficult to get it tomorrow, I am off early and from the school it isn't very far to get there. I think the addresses should be taken off the page. I'm sure we all have that info elsewhere.

Well, again, apologies for the inconvenience. It's funny: UPS has clearly focused a lot of attention on their customer relations (where apparently FedEx hasn't), because in my experience UPS drivers and counter personnel are unfailingly cheerful and helpful, especially at this time of year. Hope you get the package tomorrow with a minimum of hassle. On the bright side, there's nothing perishable inside... --Gary

Mom, I would like the caramel recipe too. I looked for it last week -- thinking it was already there. Brent needs his caramels. I am still waiting for the Lincoln box to arrive. Ready for a LONG story?? Saw Gary's note that it would be coming -- so I thought it would be on the porch when I got home. Tuesday, there was a note on the door -- saying they tried to deliver it, but it needed a signature, and they would try again on Wednesday. So I thought no big problem, I left a note (signed) that they could just leave it at the door. Came home on Wed and another note from them -- said they could not leave it without a signature. So I called them and begged them to deliver it after 3 they assured me that they could. They also said after the 3rd attempt to deliver it would be sent back to Lincoln. I even asked Emily to come over as soon as her class was over to wait for it. I called again this morning requesting that it please be delivered after noon -- again said no problem. Emily left as soon as class was over, got home at 11:30 -- said a note was on the door that they tried at 11:13 and no one was home!!!

I made yet another call to try to get them to deliver on Friday (I even get out at 1 tomorrow), but they said no -- tried 3 times. I talked to them for awhile trying to get something accomplished. She finally checked with the driver and he said he would leave it in the office tomorrow and I could pick up it there. She gave me the address -- I had her repeat it, because it was a strange one to me -- found out it isn't a SC office, but a Sargent Bluff (about 10 miles outside the city). So HOPEFULLY tomorrow after school I can pick it up -- if not it will be coming back to Lincoln.

Ready for this week to be over -- major christmas program at school and way too many practices, I know most of the lines by heart now. It is tonight, unfortuntely the flu is hitting the school hard (four sent home today) and the 3 and 4 grades have lice going through there (3 more sent home with that) it will be interesting to see how it all goes. Erika and I both get out early tomorrow -- then off til 3rd. Emily is done tomorrow for two weeks and Brent is also taking 10 days off. I am ready for it!!

So sorry about the package. My fault. We went FedEx rather than UPS just because it was closer to get to on that snowy, icy day. And when they asked if a signature was required, I just automatically said yes. All that aside, it sounds like they're being a little weird about it -- promising to deliver it after 3 but still making the attempt in the morning, and then being hardnosed about sending it back after three attempts. Next year: UPS. Anyway, my fault -- sorry for all the inconvenience. --Gary

Yesterday I went to the annual civilian State Patrol training in Grand Island. It was a long, uneventful day... But, I did get reminded of something... We had an Internet Crimes Against Children presentation (which isn't part of my job really, they do the investigations & arrests & once they are convicted they become part of my job) ANYHOW. I am reminded that I really think we need to not post our full addresses, phone numbers and email addresses & such. It just isn't all that safe... I guess I'd like to open discussion about that being removed, and if nothing else, just remove ours. If you need to get our info, just email us!

Also, kind of similar. I uncovered a scam on the Lincoln Journal Star the other day. I always browse though classifieds & came across an ad for a dog I might like some day, I emailed the address provided & got this back:

Thanks for your interest in my lovely baby . She is still very much available for new home. She is 10 weeks old she is 4ls at full grown. She is AKC registered and her shots are given up to date, she is vet checked and healthy. All her papers will accompany her, But right now i am in africa on a Christian mission with my wife and we have her right here with us.We are going to ship her to you via Express pets delivery on next day delivery after shippment through a shipping agent ,i am leaving her for $400 Including shipping. An the payment will be made via Western Union. to the shipping agent. If you are interested in having her, i want you to get back to me with your full name, address including the nearest airport to you. Please if you know that you are not going to take very good care of my baby do not reply me because i am only giving her out because we dont have time to take care of her again due to the mission work before us here.Await your response. Thanks and God bless..
I emailed LJS & told them I might be overreacting, but it sounded like one of those overseas banking ads. Sure enough, a guy emailed me right back & said I was absolutely right, it was a known scam & he wasn't sure how it slipped past & they would be removing it right away. Just doing my civic duty people, nothing to see here...

Wow. A new version of the Nigerian bank scam. Good work, Detective! As to the contact page, I sort of agree. There's nothing on there that couldn't be found some other way, but why make it easy for someone to collect it? I do like the convenience of having all the info in one place. But there are other ways to do that, even on a webpage (I'll do some research). Anyone else have thoughts on this? Unless someone makes a compelling case to keep it (or change it), I will take it down. --Gary

Amanda
12/20/07
Grandma, can you put up the caramels recipe on here today? Since no one made them, I guess it forces me to try them. My mom and Shelby are coming over on Saturday & we are going to bake all day. Thanks!

Good to hear you finally got a windshield Gary!
I am feeling better, but still not great. But, after I get done with midterms on Friday I shouldn't have much I will have to do, except for work of course...
I had fun with the Christmas sweater game. I designed ugly sweaters all during psychology class this morning!

Ah, the power of the internet! :-) --Gary

At last, our long national nightmare is over. My windshield is fixed! Took about 45 minutes, and was kinda cool to watch. I heard that last week's ice storm caused over a million dollars in damage in southeast Nebraska, and 0.0003% of that ($289) came out of my pocket. :-(

Hey Emily, I have been meaning to ask: How are you feeling? And Brent? And John?

Gary

Wow, big BIG news for all "Lord of the Rings" fans -- and I know I'm not the only one here. After years of on-again-off-again negotiations, it was announced yesterday that the movie version of "The Hobbit" is definitely ON! Peter Jackson will direct it, and he is re-assembling his previous LOTR team -- same writers, artists, and actors.

Actually, the only LOTR characters who appear in "The Hobbit" are Gandalf, Bilbo, Elrond, and Gollum. Gollum/Smeagol will be played again by Andy Serkis, Elrond (the elf ruler of Rivendell and the father of Arwen) will be played again by Hugo Weaving, and Gandalf will definitely be played again by Ian McKellen, who said years ago he would be back for "The Hobbit" whenever/wherever.

Bilbo presents some difficulties. Ian Holm will be in his 80s when filming starts, and he would be required to play a very much younger Bilbo. So it's likely that another actor will be cast for this role.

The biggest surprise in all this was the announcement that Jackson is doing not one but TWO movies, filmed simultaneously. The first will be "The Hobbit" as the story appears in the book (Bilbo's finding of the ring), and the second will be about the events occurring in the 60-some years between the end of that book and the beginning of "The Lord of the Rings" -- events which certainly include Gandalf and Aragorn, and will very likely include many other LOTR characters like Boromir, Eowyn, Saruman, and others. These events all occurred "offscreen" in the books and were only related in flashbacks, etc., so this second movie will all be new and unexplored territory -- and will bring the story right up to where the "Fellowship of the Ring" begins, making all five films one seamless whole. So, woo-hoo! Here we go again! :-)

So many cool sites, so little time.... Found a couple recently that I didn't want to put at the end of the list, but instead thought I would introduce right here:
1) This site lets you design your own Christmas sweater, just for fun. (Be sure to also click on "Window Shopping" to see hundreds of sweaters other people put together.)
2) The Minneapolis Star-Tribune put together this site on the 35W bridge collapse. It's amazing.

Latest on the very fascinating windshield saga: Still not fixed! The guy came out this morning, took one look at it and got on the cellphone to the ordering dept. Turns out my windshield has a special chrome frame, which has to be overnighted from Omaha, so the operation is postponed for yet another day. Yeesh! "Yeah, I could maybe get away with bending that chrome a little on a warm day, but when it's cold like this you gotta cut it and replace it." Also, price goes up seventy bucks.... So cross your fingers everyone, and maybe it will get fixed tomorrow.
Gary

Y'all remember when the Dixie Chicks dared to say a critical word about Our Beloved Emperor Bush? And how the right-wingers turned on 'em, and burned their CDs? Well, here's a good article about something that has happened since then. Worth your time!
Gary
12/17/07
Correction to my previous post: I did not get a new windshield this morning. Mid-morning my phone rings; it's the glass guy, saying that this morning as he was putting my windshield in his truck, he slipped on the ice and the windshield is now "in a million pieces." He's ok (except for a bruised hip), but obviously the windshield is not. He said the nearest one is in Omaha, and he's having it overnighted here. So tomorrow morning we try again! :-)
Gary
12/17/07
Brrr. Cold morning out there. But on the plus side, I don't have to scrape my windshield this morning! Because the glass guy is coming over soon to give me a new one. And what the hey, I think I'll throw in a new pair of wiper blades, too. :-)

Note to the Hatgidakis and Nelson families: parcels are now en route to you, via FedEx. Should be there approximately Wednesday.

And one week from today is what...? That's right, Christmas Eve!

Nice to see some sun today, as inconvenient as this ice is when the sun hit the trees this morning was hard to think of anything any prettier. Mother Nature did a great job with her Christmas display this year. I am sorry all you guys are sick, get better soon. Have a variety of bugs this year. Sorry you have to get a new windshield, Gary, I'm pretty sure that was way down on the list. So Sunny went to see Santa! I wonder if Livy has thought of that??

My neighbor cats were all three over this morning and they have left lots of paw prints in the snow, they don't make snow angels or snowmen, T. & t. I heard you made bunch's of those. Better get back to reading, may think of something that should be done! Get well, everyone!! By the way, Gary, if you need a bit of cheer, just look at your card you sent this year!! I do!!

Well, that helps a little, I guess... :-) --Gary

Gary
12/13/07
Well, I decided on what to get myself for Christmas -- something in the $200 range and something I really need...? The perfect thing is: a new windshield! :-(

I managed to get my car doors open yesterday afternoon, and then spent an hour chipping the 1/4-inch layer of ice off all the windows. When I got the windshield free of ice, I discovered a bunch of long cracks running through it. I must have whacked it too hard with the ice scraper.... So, Monday morning a glass guy is coming out to replace it. (And no, I'm not insured for that.)

Hatgidakis's, I agree with Karen: the webpage needs that Santa/Sunny picture! Email it to me if it's electronic; otherwise, you can mail me the picture, and I will scan it and mail it right back.

Hi Marsha -- I did get your message on Sunday about the box, tried to call you back, but you were gone. Glad it got there OK. I'll keep an eye out for the mailman this week. Sorry to hear that John isn't feeling well -- hope he is better soon. I am tired of illness around here. Brent has been sick too, went to the doctor on Saturday -- he has bronchitis. He could not talk at all for 4 days, today he could manage a whisper so he went back to the office. Emily is still dragging, but she did get her car back this afternoon. It took a big check to get it out of the repair shop, but it should be good to go for awhile. Glad that my christmas shopping is almost done! Zach -- Erika LOVES stuffed shells and I don't make them very often. You should send Sunnys picture in so we could all see him. Anna -- how is school going? I never hear from you:)
Marsha
12/12/07
Sorry to hear about all that ice, nothing is better than an ice storm to stop all outside endeavors. We have had cold weather and plenty of snow, we will enjoy a white Christmas this year. Lori and Paul, your box arrived, as did Karen and Brent's. Thank you! We are sending a box to Moms tomorrow (easy one stop mail address) and one to the Nelsons. Our tree is up and most of the shopping is done. A few work parties and the like. Zach is over tonight and making some stuffed shells (yummy). Sunny went to Petco and sat on Santa's lap, he sure looked happy in the picture. John has been feeling pretty lousy for several days, but today he was doing much better. Hoping that lasts.
Gary
12/12/07
Yeah, actually Amanda sent me these ice storm photos in an email quite a while ago, but I never got around to using them. (I always thought I would use them during some really hot week in August or something.) But then I just happened to run across this website that had all the photos on one page. And there we are.

I'm having one more snow day today, myself. My car doors are like welded shut. Most of the problem is that the rubber seals around the doors in my poor old car are not so good any more, so the rain (before it froze) really worked itself into the door. I'm thinking pouring warm water on it might only make it worse, but I might try that this afternoon. What I really need is some sunshine and warm temps. Meanwhile, it's all hot chocolate and catching up on my TiVo. :-)

Donna

Great pictures on the cool site. I drove into work this morning but very few others did. I don't know why really. It's not that bad. There's a guy here that lives about an hour south of Omaha and they had over 2 inches of ice. No power until last night. He couldn't get into his car either. He said he took out buckets of boiling water to melt the ice off the door but it did no good, just too much ice.

Emily, I'm sorry you're having such a hard time. Get better soon!!!
Gary
12/12/07
Quick note about today's cool site. This is not the ice storm we were complaining about yesterday. The pictures show the effects of an ice storm that hit Switzerland a few years ago. I put these Advent pages together over a month ago, so this cool site showing up today was just a coincidence. Interesting, eh?
Karen
12/11/07
I wish I had the snow days you guys are getting, but not with the ice. We have maybe 6 inches of snow on the ground here, but not too bad to get around. We had a fun trip to the doctor tonight. Poor Emily has been feeling yucky since she was home for Thanksgiving break. Tired, achy, sore throat..... Tonight she came over for supper with the same complaints -- I finally said enough -- you are going to the doctor -- she HATES to go to the doctor, but this time she didn't complain as much as I expected. So I took her to our "after hours" doctor office. She got in and I waited and waited, people were coming and going and still no Emily. Finally after about 30 minutes in with the doctor she came out. She was not happy that she had to have a throat swab, but no strep, then a blood test -- it showed up with MONO!! Poor kid, been sick all this time and we didn't know it. No medicine to give for it, just lots of rest. So she will be home again this week-end and hopefully sleeping most of the time. She has also been having car trouble and without her car for the third day now. The key wouldn't turn in the ignition. So that needed to be replaced and while they were checking it over also found that it needs a new transmission -- so guess what she gets for Christmas......

Just two weeks today until Christmas, think I am almost ready. Just a few more gifts to buy, did make a couple of cookies this week-end and Erika put the tree up on Friday. All of the Nelson's will be here the Sunday before Christmas -- so I will have to do some cooking before then too. Enjoy your days off!

Jeez, Emily, Merry Christmas! :-( Hope you (and your car) feel better soon! --Gary

I went out for a bit this afternoon and the roads weren't too bad. I did see a lot of cars that had a heavy coat of ice. And on the news tonight there was a truck driver that was using a hammer to break the ice off his truck. I doubt you'll be going in to work tomorrow either. Good luck.

Just now looked at the cool site. I'm guessing this is where we can find you the perfect Christmas present?

I was going for a theme there, yes. --Gary

Hmmmm, I may be here for a while.... I just now (around 4:30) went outside to chip the ice off my car, and couldn't even open the car doors. Both frozen solid. I considered pouring water over them, but figured that would freeze just as solid a few minutes later. So I couldn't get inside to get my ice scrapers. (I've got a couple of old ones in the trunk, but that was frozen solid, too.) So I gave up -- and I guess now I'm waiting for warmer temperatures....

I heard we've gotten about half an inch of freezing rain/ice, with snow to come later today though it's not snowing now (at 9 am). Just a few minutes ago, the University announced a snow half-day -- with everything to resume at noon. But the announcement came long after the University staff would have left for work... a masterpiece of timing. I'm glad I stayed home!

My friend from Colorado, whom I mentioned below, reported on their snowfall: forty inches of dense wet snow. To clear her walks and driveway, she had to make three passes with the snowblower, taking a foot of snow at a time. Yikes! In the nearby small town, the snowplows grade the snow to the center of the streets rather than to the curb; and the mountain of snow in the street stands at around fifteen feet high!

Snow day!!!! Which really just means I work from home, but I'll take it. So how much ice do we have? I heard that the ice is over and now snow. But it hasn't started snowing here yet. Livy, we missed you Friday!
Yeah, VERY funny picture, Gary.

Stop, I'm blushing! --Gary

Hey everybody! Gary, I love the picture today, where there are 4 pictures of you! That was very funny! I know, but I am already up, and once I get up, I can't get back to sleep until the next night... So I guess I am up, but what to do! I am the only one at my house, so I don't know yet what I am doing... Well I guess that is all I had to say, so I'll talk to you all later!

Enjoy your snow day, Livy! Watch some movies, play on the computer, make some snacks. Or, check out these recent cool sites: one -- two -- three -- four -- five -- six. Have fun and let us know how you're keeping busy. :-) --Gary

SNOW DAY for Lincoln Public Schools! Also Omaha Public, which means Gallup I believe. UN-L? Naaah. Business as usual, even though ice and snow is expected to continue today. So I'm declaring a snow day for my own office -- my personal office -- and staying home. :-)

Lindsey (Lori) your box arrived last night -- thanks for sending it. I have boxes in the mail to Minneapolis and Lincoln -- so they should be there in a few days.

Just got back from a nice Christmas shopping trip with Mom. We didn't have too many stops, as both of us were almost done shopping anyway, but we did finish off with a great lunch at the Green Gateau -- which included an excellent salmon chowder.

In my email when I got home was a note from a friend who lives up in the Colorado Rockies. She said it has been snowing heavily there for the past 18 hours (since around 6 last night); but, being Colorado, they didn't cancel school but instead let the kids go home early today, at noon. She said the high school kids are going to spend the afternoon making snowmen up and down the main street in town. They expect it to continue snowing through Sunday, for a total of around three feet. More snow possible here tomorrow (same storm?), but only a couple of inches at most, they say.

P.S. Remember Pearl Harbor!

And more snow today, which means I'm working from home.

That bear story was amazing!

Really sad news at Westroads yesterday.

I was wondering if you were out on the road this morning. Good! The interstate must be miserable, so it's a great day to be home. I just got back from taking Mom to her routine doc app't, and the roads were awful -- surprisingly slick, and the snow is at the perfect temperature to gum up your windshield wipers, making visibility a real problem. No fun! Though if you're out walking in it, it is beautiful; and the sound of it falling through the tree branches is amazing. --Gary

Unless my eyes were deceiving me this morning, I thought I saw a few flakes in the air. Even though the real storm (3 to 6 inches?) isn't supposed to hit until tomorrow morning....

Hey, I know it's hard to keep up with the constant stream of our cool sites, but last Monday's was a great one which you shouldn't miss -- a little news story from California told with photos called "'Bearly' Hanging On." It's worth a few minutes of your time.

And we got Ron Brown back.

The Giuliani thing was pretty funny. Which reminds me, Gary, are you taking tomorrow morning off to see Bush speak in Omaha? He's trying to drum up some votes for his buddy Mike Johanns.

I heard about Ron Brown this morning. Good move on Pelini's part, I think. As for seeing Bush in Omaha: No. The only time I will go out of my way to see Bush in person will be for his sentencing. And P.S. to Mike Johanns: Apparently you didn't get the memo, but having Bush campaign for you these days actually lowers your numbers.... --Gary

Bo Pelini is now officially on board as Head Coach. I missed the press conference yesterday, but I understand it was really great. Osborne deadpanned that in his search, he found only one person who had never lost a game as head coach -- Bo Pelini. (Pelini has coached only one game as head coach, when he took over temporarily after Solich was abruptly fired, and he won that game.) Pelini's remarks, I understand, were funny and graceful and hit all the right notes: respect the tradition, restore the walk-on program, welcome back former players, lean on Osborne for guidance, and he said some kind words about Frank Solich.

Also, while I have the floor (awfully quiet in here!), check out this political ad for Giuliani. (Not to spoil it, but it's a joke ad.)

The parade is cancelled. Hoping to be rescheduled next week. We were gonna go, and the girls were looking forward to it. This isn't like school getting cancelled!

Gary, Ryan said the EXACT same thing about the wet marks & a street sweeper, though he figured it out on his own not too long after he noticed them.

He was out at 5 this morning going to work. Said side roads are awful, main ones are OK. I don't know if we will get the snow??

Grandma, got the fire going yet? I hear you are all ready for it! Ryan is going to bring more wood to you sometime too. (Saw in the paper a cord of it is $140! Wowza, am I glad Ryan is handy with a chain saw!)

Gary, where did you get the Pelini story? Now we hear ESPN yanked their report, which was the first (main?) one yesterday.

And 80 boxes, really? Are you exaggerating? Or using the little travel size? Wow!

Lincoln's Channel 10 aired the Pelini story (link here), but their source is ESPN, so.... And yeah, 80 boxes is a bit of an exaggeration, but on Nose-Blowing Day 11 that's what it feels like. Too bad about the parade -- I hadn't heard that yet. A good idea, I'm sure, though it must be an organizational nightmare. --Gary

Welcome to December, everybody, and I hope you enjoy the Advent calendar.

May be old news to some of you, but I just heard it: Bo Pelini will be in Lincoln on Monday for an "announcement," subject undisclosed. I daresay he's not traveling to Lincoln just to say no.... So it sounds like the speculation is over!

Another mystery solved (for me) this morning: On the campus yesterday I was mystified as to why all the sidewalks were wet. It looked as though a little street sweeper had gone over them, and I wondered why they would be putting water on the sidewalks just before a predicted temperature drop. Then as I drove around town, I noticed most of the streets had that same swept/wet look. What was going on? Well, it turns out that, in advance of the predicted freezing rain, all the surfaces were being pre-treated with a new kind of salt solution to prevent ice from forming. Hope it works -- the Christmas parade starts in just a few hours!

P.S.: If anyone wants to donate to my Kleenex Fund, I have sneezed my way through about 80 boxes so far, with no end in sight.... Bleeaahhhh!!
