Thanks for reminding me to put up that recipe, Amanda, I have been meaning to do so since I came back! I took Lori's wonderful apple cake to work today and it got rave reviews from all of my co-workers! Thanks Lori! We are still chilly here, it has been 6 months of winter, enough already!!! John has been hired as a manager for CORA (Creating Opportunities by Recognizing Abilities). He will be working from home with the purpose of getting people with disabilities working from home. More details as they become available, but he is really happy with this new position.

Congrats on the new job, John, and thanks for the new review, Marsha. --Gary

Hi everyone! Thank you for the Birthday wishes, and thanks to Grandma and the Hatgidakis's for the cards!

I had a fun Birthday, but the 4 hours at Teen Court weren't very enjoyable, but there were still some very interesting (and strange) cases.

Amanda, like Emily said I've had my permit since July, and my parents don't like to take me driving anymore because I'm fairly horrible at driving and listening, but I am signed up for Drivers Ed. this Summer so that will become my teacher's problem.

And Emily, I don't agree with your Cold Stone choice, I recommend coffee ice cream with chocolate chips.

Amanda

Uhh... Why don't they like to take her driving anymore?

Good looking class schedule, Emily, though it's a shame they are making you take Abnormal Psychology -- I would think you would have qualified for Normal Psychology...

Way to go, Erika, on the seven cases and for your case as attorney. Well done, Counselor!

Only a few weeks of classes left here at UN-L too. Summer is coming up really fast, and yet people are still wearing coats and jackets!

Emily

Erika has leally been able to drive for awhile. In Iowa you can get your learner's permit at 14. But, Mom and Dad don't really like to take her driving anymore... She is going to be taking drivers ed this summer.

We had birthday quesadillas and cookie cake for Erika after a record 7 cases in Teen Court last night. And, she even got to be an attorney and handle one of the cases by herself.

I have been working at Cold Stone for about a week now, and I think I am going to like it there. If anyone goes, I recommend the rasberry sorbet and Ghiradeli chocolate with white chocolate chips :)

I am getting ready for school to be over. I only have about 2 weeks and finals left. But, then I will start my statistics class in June. I also had to register for fall classes last week and it looks like I will be taking Abnormal Psychology, Philosophy in Art, Modern Fiction, and Public Speaking. But, none of them ever start before 10:30, so I won't have to wake up early!

Those of you who know me will know that I prefer dark chocolate to milk chocolate. (If you don't know me, you should make the effort -- I'm delightful!) It's not that I don't like milk chocolate, but just that I prefer dark -- especially Dove dark chocolate. But I recently tried the Dove caramel-filled milk chocolates, and wow, milk chocolate just got a new friend! Try 'em if you haven't!
Amanda

So, can Erika drive now?

Marsha, I would like the asian spaghetti/pasta salad you made while here posted to the recipe page. And grandma, same with the stuffed shells.

So, McCain visited New Orleans yesterday, looking at the destroyed neighborhoods that haven't been touched in three years, and said that if the disaster had happened on his watch, he would have immediately landed at the nearest Air Force base -- unlike Bush. "Never again, never again," he said, "will a disaster of this nature be handled in the disgraceful way it was handled."

And where was McCain when Katrina was hitting New Orleans? Here he is on August 29, 2005, as the center of the storm passed over the city.

I can't even look at that trek across the ravine or dam without being scared. Luckily, I probably won't be tempted to cross it.

Cool but cloudy today, didn't go outside much.

I did get an e-mail from you, Amanda! Glad you told me to look. I would be interested, if it doesn't cause you any trouble.

Yikes -- I just watched that video! NO WAY!! My questions is -- if it's "closed" why were there so many people on it??? I have started a nice long week-end. The teachers have a convention in Minneapolis, so I got out at 1 today and am off until Monday. No real plans, just taking it easy. I guess I do have one thing to do -- Erika is having her birthday party on Friday. Invited 4 girls for a slumber party. Emily officially started her job this afternoon -- working at Cold Stone Creamery. She seemed to to like it (after 3 hours). Gary -- thanks for the football ticket info -- but Brent is declining. He is still a bit ticked off with UNL -- he is planning to sponser our local teams :) Beautiful day here today, finally beginning to see some green spots on the lawn. Brent and I did go out Monday and get a few plants for the garden. Hoping to get them in this week-end.

Cold Stone Creamery -- yum! Anybody else who may be thinking about tickets, I'd like to know by Monday or Tuesday of next week. (And remember, if we request 'em, there's no guarantee we get 'em.) Weather-wise, I hear rainy tomorrow, cold Friday (40s), and in the 70s for the weekend. Ah, Spring! :-) --Gary

OMG! Just watching that literally made hair raise! Wow.

Grandma, did you get an email from me?

In Spain, there is a deep valley called El Chorro that has a dam at one end. In 1901 a walkway (named "El Camino del Rey," or "the King's pathway") was built so that workers could get from one side of the valley to the other. The walkway -- now fallen into disrepair -- hugs the steep sides of the cliff. Walking it now is extremely dangerous, and many people have fallen from it to their deaths in recent years. It is officially closed, but adventurous tourists and climbers still manage to find their way to it. Here's a hair-raising 6-minute video of a walk across it....

Late start this morning, as some of you may have noticed. I wasn't able to get today's page up on time because windstream (oops, Windstream) was down last night and this morning -- or, at least my connection to it was. Seems to be OK now....

Hey, football fans! I have already sold my and Mom's season tickets, but would anyone like tickets to an individual game or two (or more)? When I send in the paperwork, I can also request individual tickets to any home games (at $49 each). There are no guarantees -- but if there are available tickets, season ticketholders get first dibs. No money is needed now. We will pay for them when we are notified if they are available -- sometime this summer. So if you want me to request some tickets for this first year of the Pelini Era, let me know which game(s) you want and how many tickets. Deadline is May 1, so let me know ASAP. Here is the schedule:
August 30 W Michigan
September 6 San Jose State
September 13 New Mexico State
September 27 Virginia Tech
October 4 Missouri
October 25 Baylor
November 8 Kansas
November 28 Colorado

Or, to put it another way, April showers bring May flowers. We've been getting a nice spring rain for the past 24 hours, off and on. Right now (9 am) really on, with big heavy raindrops and skies dark enough that it looks like evening out there. I hear the weekend is supposed to be clear and sunny, just in time for the Red & White game tomorrow.
Amanda

Perfect, because I'm not sure that she saw it yesterday! It was a busy day. I will make sure she sees it tonight. Bonus!

Puppy is named Bella. Actually Bella Maggie Princess. She's a good pup. A little whining, but not bad, considering we've only had her a week tomorrow. Weighed a pound 13 ounces the day after we got her... Sasha & Zoe love her. Sash loves having another dog around & Zoe loves someone to bat around...

By popular request, here are two more funnies: Will Ferrell as Bush on global warming, and the "Synchronized Swimming" sketch from Saturday Night Live (though this clip is not full-length unfortunately):

It was miserable rain all day. I had to drive to Omaha & then back into town then clear south of Lincoln, by the time I got back to my office I was DONE with the rain.

We took Alexis to the Children's Museum tonight. It was her first time, she had a blast! Just me, Ryan, T & t & Alexis went, it was nice to have time with just her. She fell asleep before we even got out of downtown!

Tomorrow me, T, t & Livy are going to head over to grandmas at about 4 when I'm off work (early) and the girls are out of school. Hope someone (everyone) will be there!

I LOVE that Carol Burnett episode, probably better than the movie!
Rainy, rainy, rainy day here -- hope Marsha didn't have to drive through it all day.

I just now (3:00 pm) heard they've arrived! Don't know what the drive was like -- haven't talked to them yet. I'm on the way over to Mom's now. --Gary

Okay, it's comedy time! I ran across the old Carol Burnett "Gone With the Wind" parody (all 20 minutes of it, in two parts) on YouTube, so I place it here for your viewing pleasure:

And to follow, my two favorite Monty Python sketches: "The Argument Clinic" (2 1/2 minutes) and "The Cheese Shop" (5 1/2 minutes):

Erika, how can you not visit with a request like that? I think you should tell your family to come down Saturday. I need you to help me with some stuff on my new cell phone. ;-)

4/9/08
Hey now, Donna, if they think the weather will be bad, they might not come! Sshh!!!

I know we are excited to see everyone. Teghan asked if Erika was coming too, she said she wished she was...

Saturday night & joint b-day celebration sounds nice!

Remember that drought we were having in Lincoln years ago but Minneapolis was having a lot of rain and the day Marsha got here Lincoln got hit with heavy rain and flooding? Well, we've been having nice weather but today it turned cold--29 degrees this morning. Temps this weekend in the 40's and even a chance of snow. Coincidence?
Marsha

Another cold snap here... boy, is everybody tired of it! Sam, Anna and I are arriving on Thursday and leaving on Sunday. Hope it is warm in Lincoln! Would love a get together for Grandma (AND Tristen's) birthday.

I loved the front page yesterday, and today's is even better!! Thanks for finding it Donna.

I know that not everyone gets to check the webpage every day, so in case anyone missed them I can make the pages available for a while -- until space becomes a problem. So if you missed them, here is Monday and here is Tuesday. --Gary

I thought the Greek one sounded good too. Problem is, Ryan wouldn't like them particularly (white sauce, mayo on all I presume? In the mixture? That's classic chicken salad anyway) and the girls wont either...

Not necessarily. The Bayou sandwich, for example, is a chili-red. And even on those mixtures which are mayo-based, the mayo is not heavy. I think you could all find something on the menu you'd like. --Gary

Amanda
4/6/08
Gary, I've never tried that place before. Tracie was telling me about it, the company she works for owns it now... It sounded good, and right up grandma's alley, so I thought I'd tell her about it. The menu looks great though!

Marsha's what day are you coming? And leaving? Are we all going to get together Saturday for Grandma's birthday??

I stopped by the Roost on Saturday night and got a sampling of their sandwiches so we could give them a try. I thought the smoked chicken and bacon was good, and also the Bayou sandwich with andouille sausage; the ranch and the pesto sandwiches were okay. Not a bad place! --Gary

Amanda
4/5/08
Grandma, that place is called The Roost. Chicken Salad place.

More info, please! Never heard of this place. It's good...? --Gary

Gee, Emily, I'm sorry you lost your job! Really a great way to let you know. So much for being a faithful employee. Rainy today but on our way to the 70's the next couple. Things are greening up slowly. How is everybody? Got your voice back, Karen? Marsha, I unloaded a few things from the bedroom upstairs, in anticipation of your visit. I hope you are not allergic to dust????

Poor Emily got some surprising news yesterday and is now unemployed! Erika was watching the 6:00 news and came out and said that Village Inn was closing. We couldn't find any more information on it so Brent called Emily and they went to the restaurant. Sure enough, the doors were locked and a few people were moving things out. She did happen to run into one of her managers and talked to him. He told her that at 3 they were informed that both stores in SC (and 150 others in the country) were closing at 6 that same day. So, on the plus side, she now has her week-ends free, but will need to start looking for another job.

Wow, if a place selling pie and coffee can't stay in business, this economy is in trouble... Don't worry, Emily, all this means is that there's a better job out there waiting for you. --Gary

Couple of news items for your perusal:

San Francisco is considering re-naming its sewage treatment facility in "honor" of George Bush. :-) I predict the "George W Bush Sewage Plant" could become a tourist attraction! Though one person commented, "This could hurt the image of sewage plants." Story here.

Regular Keith Olbermann watchers have been following his challenging Wal-Mart over their attempts to sue an injured former employee to get back the money they spent on her through health insurance. Well, mighty Wal-Mart has backed down! Keith wins! (Not to mention the injured woman and her family.) And not only that (says the following CNN story), but Congress may be looking at limiting or eliminating this policy of "subrogation" -- which is companies reclaiming their insurance payouts after the employee receives a settlement, something established during the Sewage Bush administration. Story here.
