I'm a little tired of the storms myself. I love rain and thunderstorms but these have been intense. I lost power last Friday night/Saturday morning for about 6 hours and lost power again last night too. No tree or structure damage, so I shouldn't complain.

Oh my god another bad storm last night. When are we going to get a break? I was up for this one. A house 2 doors down lost parts of their shed, it was in everyone's yards & he was out trying to get it all at 11 when the 63 (if not more out here) mph winds... Sheesh, I'm tired of this. My poor rose bushes look awful!

Yeahh, finally summer vacation!! Erika got out yesterday -- although she is back at school now -- Starting her drivers ed class. Amanda -- I enjoyed watching the dance rehearsals. Erika has been having a practice everyday this week -- her recital is on Saturday. Gary -- good info on the upcoming movies -- the Amelia Earhart movie sounds good to me. I just finished reading the John Adams book, now I want to watch that series. Anna -- I sent a package to you yesterday -- be watching for the mailman :)

Dark and dreary here again -- I think we will be having nasty weather before the day is over. Hey Gary, not to create extra work for you but.... how about a new game on the web page? Now that I am off of school (and a few other people too) I actually have time to check the page out again. Just an idea.....

Your wish is my command. I will come up with some kind of game next week. Oh, and you're going to love the John Adams series. As great as the book was, this series affected me even more. The DVD set comes out on June 10 -- only twelve days from now! --Gary

It's funny (and I don't mean funny ha-ha, but funny sad) to watch the press deal with Scotty McClellan's book. His basic premise is "I lied about the war because my bosses (Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld) lied to me. It's really the fault of the press for not asking tougher questions." And all the press people are taking this very personally: "We were trying to ask tough questions, but you were fibbing to us! Waaaahh!" Fact is, they were not reporters, but (as Jon Stewart called them) stenographers -- merely writing down and printing up whatever the White House spoon-fed them.

And of course, now the press is chasing its own tail over this. Instead of stepping back and acknowledging the lesson of McClellan's book -- "We were lied into a war that is still going on" -- they're going round and round in circles with "Is Scotty being completely truthful here? Why would he be saying this? We trusted him before, should we trust him now??" Pathetic!

Not to be partisan -- I know there are some Hillary supporters reading this -- but I gotta say: Gobama! I've been waiting to hear this for a long time....

Heads up, Lincoln and Omaha residents: Strong storms this afternoon, with possible tornadoes. Keep an eye on the weather....

In the meantime, howsabout some entertainment news:

  • The next Spider-Man movie will be a two-parter, and will be filmed back-to-back. There was a rumor floating around that Tobey Maguire would not be returning as Spider-Man this time, but according to the studio that's not true: he will be.
  • Another two-parter is in the works: The Hobbit. Peter Jackson will now be producing, but not directing, the pictures -- that job goes to the guy who directed "Pan's Labyrinth" a few years ago. The first of the two movies will cover the whole story of "The Hobbit" (Bilbo's finding of the ring), and the second movie will cover events that occurred between that story and the beginning of "The Lord of the Rings" -- so the five movies will make one unbroken story when finished. This is the story of a much younger Bilbo, so Ian Holm won't be back (except perhaps as narrator), and none of the other hobbits enter into this story at all because it all happens before they were born. But the other cast members are all expected back. Ian McKellan returns as Gandalf, and Viggo Mortensen will return as Strider -- in the second movie. This second movie will be all new territory even for readers of the books, as these events weren't covered in the books, only summarized. Filming hasn't even started -- release date for the first movie is Christmas 2011.
  • A movie on the life of Amelia Earhart is in the works, with Hillary Swank in the lead role, and Ewan McGregor as Gene Vidal (father of Gore Vidal, my favorite author) with whom she had an affair. This should be good!
  • Ewan MacGregor will be busy before that, though. One week from today, shooting starts in Rome for Angels and Demons, by "Da Vinci Code" author Dan Brown. It is directed again by Ron Howard, and again stars Tom Hanks. MacGregor plays Carlo Ventresca, the Pope's assistant. This picture will be in theaters a year from now, opening May 15, 2009.
  • The script is ready for Steven Spielberg's Lincoln, but shooting won't begin until early next year so Spielberg can finish his current project (an animated feature called "Tintin" based on the French comic book series). Liam Neeson plays Abraham Lincoln, and Sally Field will play Mary Todd Lincoln. Can't wait for this one!

Here's a link to You Tube, I put the rehearsal videos on there. They aren't as good as the recital, but we couldn't tape those. It's a pretty "rough draft" but the recital was so much better! Like I said on the comments, one thing the girls learned from watching this was to not tug on the top of their costumes!!! They did pretty good at the recital after watching these videos! And if you read the comments you'll learn hip hop (the red costumes) was a "train wreck" at rehersal but MUCH better at recital.

So, today was about the greatest day a parent can have. Tristen & Teghan had their recital this afternoon & it went great. Tristen was in 4 dances, Teghan 2. Tristen did ballet, tap, jazz and hip hop, Teghan was in ballet & tap. Ryan, I, dad, Lori, Linz, Liv, Steve, Cathy, my mom & Shelby were there. After we sat through the 3 1/2 hour amazing production at the Leid Center, they brought all the dancers on stage (about 300, and this was the second show, there's probably about 500 all together in the studio) and the owners were doing their thank yous to the teachers, volunteers & helpers. Then one of the owners started talking about a special recognition they give to one student who shows great dancing ability, good attitude, etc. just an all around good person/dancer. She starts telling stories about this student about how she is always the first to offer to try something new, or if they have to change something she is the first to say, I'll try it, when no one else wants to. She said this girl always has a smile, always gives 100 percent. She also told a story from a few weeks ago about this girl & another girl who looked truly happy when doing their routine & the teacher (one of the owners, and the one giving the speech) said to them, "you guys look so happy" and this girl said, "it's because WE ARE HAPPY!" SOOOO, any of this sound like anyone you know? Because then, she said, "Tristen Metcalf, can you please come up here?!!!!" OMG! I instantly start crying, I took such a deep breath in that I swallowed/choked on my gum! Everyone was grabbing me asking, did you know about this? NO! I didn't! I mean, I knew Tristen was all of those wonderful things, but I'm her mom, of course I feel that way.

They told her that she got a scholarship for one class next year. Which is great because she was wanting to add on another one next year.

At the end I went up & thanked the owner who made the speech. As soon as I said I'm Tristen Metcalf's mom she gave me a big hug. Then she talked to me for about 10 minutes, in the middle of all the commotion of the end of the recital. She told me all these great, wonderful things about Tristen & I just kept thanking her for thinking such great things about her, and recognizing her talents and personality. She told me how good she is (which of course, I already knew!) and that she sees great potential in her & compared her to some of the older girls who are highly recognizable as the studio stars, saying she could be that some day.

Later, when all the family was congratulating her (& she cried for the 3rd or 4th time) my mom said, so what class do you think you will take with the scholarship? And Tristen says, "I don't even know what that means!" How great. She's so selfless that she doesn't even care what the prize is, she just appreciates the recognition. And that's exactly how I felt too. I just felt solidified to know other people see the same greatness in her that I do.

Wow. Long story. It was very moving though, and we want to share it with everyone. When we get the DVD from the production company I'm going to try to "clip" that part out & put it on You Tube to share...

    CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN TRISTEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, we had like a weird quasi-tornado go through here apparently last night.... Ryan woke up this morning to the back door in the garage hanging wide open. Upon further inspection, he noticed the door was broken. The deadbolt was still intact from being locked last night. Then, he noticed the big garage door. Something (the wind) pushed it right out. Looked like an idiot put it into reverse with the door shut. It pulled it out of the frame and everything. (I say something (the wind) here BECAUSE I haven’t called our insurance company yet, but when I looked quickly at our policy I noticed that of course the deductible for wind & hail is $1900! OMG!)

To further document the weird wind I have a picture of the house across the street that is in the framing stages. The whole north wall came off last night.

Oddly, no other damage appears apparent in the neighborhood. Of course.... We can’t use our garage door now (Ryan was hammering it into place this morning at 4 am just so he could get his truck out to go to work) and our back door doesn’t lock.

    Fantastic…

Chilly and rainy day -- feels more like March weather. Almost done with school. I got out at 1 today, go back on Tuesday for another short day, then I am finished!! Boy, will I be glad! This has been a tough year. Looking forward to having some time off. Erika has to go until Wednesday. On Thursday -- she gets to go back to school for drivers ed class -- so not much of a break for her. Emily has been back home for about two weeks now. Haven't seen too much of her, been working a lot. She and some friends are planning a trip to the Omaha zoo on Sunday. Amanda -- how was the birthday party?
When does school get out in Lincoln? Anna are you done with the year yet? What are everyones plans for the summer break? I don't think I will be doing much at all ......

It is finally a warm week... mostly 70's at last! I bought some tomato and pepper plants today. I just love giving the squirrels something to dig up. We got WiFi (with John's new job) and it sure is nice to have. I got a new computer at work and I just got a new cell phone with a camera... I'm finally joining the new milennium. Anna and I just made a pasta salad, criscross potatoes and are going to grill some chicken out. We got Lindsey's graduation announcement and some great pictures of her today. Way to go Grad!!

Well, I'm a little sad that Archuletta didn't win. I heard him on an interview and he said, 'I'm just so proud of him (Cook).' Nice guy. I thought for sure Archuletta would win. But I like that Cook was a non-professional and never had a record contract unlike Archuletta and it's nice that he's from the midwest and tried out in Omaha. And yeah, I'm glad it's over now too. January is a long time away.

I heard someone talking about this on MSNBC this morning. She said, from the point of view of the American Idol producers, they're thrilled with this result. They want, she said, a person they can re-shape and re-package as necessary and who won't cause a lot of legal and contractual problems -- which Archuletta ( + his dad) is definitely NOT. Maybe that's why Simon gave Archuletta the "kiss of death" on Tuesday by basically declaring him the winner. :-) --Gary

Gotta tell you all a Livy story, from Amanda's birthday party on Saturday. (Livy kindly gave me permission for this.)

Amanda and Ryan were talking about going to Campbell's Nursery to look at trees, when Livy got a puzzled look on her face and said, "Trees?!? They have trees at Campbell's Nursery...?"
    I said, Yeah.
She said, "I thought it was just soup!"

After we enjoyed this for a moment, she said, "I thought it was kind of a big place for just soup!"

And one from Teghan: As she was loading up her plate with a mound of barbecued brisket, she turned and seriously informed us, "This is in the meat group."

And one more about Teghan, by way of Tristen: Many of us have observed that keeping secrets is not Teghan's strong suit, so I asked Tristen if Teghan knew ahead of time about her mom's surprise party. Tristen said that Ryan told them both about the surprise and told Teghan not to say a word about it to her mom, when Teghan suddenly started crying. They asked what was wrong, and she said, "Does this mean I can't even say hello to her?" He explained that of course she could -- and she kept the secret, too!

Yes, we have a moron for a President who has has driven us trillions of dollars into debt, has broken what was once the most powerful army in the world, and has lowered the esteem of the U.S. so far that when he travelled to Saudi Arabia a few days ago to beg our so-called friend and ally King Abdullah to lower oil prices a little Abdullah casually refused... in spite of all that, I say, there are still some things this country can do right. Well, I found the tight jeans episode. "The Wait Out" is what it was called. I can't find a clip of that section though. Hilarious. To make us all feel a little older, I offer this: It was ten years ago today that "Seinfeld" went off the air.... So it may have been a coincidence, but last night at dinner a few of us were remembering as many of the old Seinfeld catch-phrases as we could. We recalled "yadda yadda" and "No soup for you!" and a few others. Well, here are a few more I turned up this morning:
  • Regifting -- You hear this all the time now, yet "Seinfeld" invented it!
  • Get out! -- as in "I don't believe that!"
  • Double-dipping
  • Big Salad
  • Not that there's anything wrong with that!
  • Serenity Now!

And here's three-and-a-half minutes of rapid-fire Seinfeld moments for your viewing pleasure:

Hey, Grandma, Gary & Donna, we made it to vote! Just in time, we were the last ones. Phew! Thanks for the Pampered Chef orders, thanks for dinner & the great rhubarb & dumpling dessert. Sorry to rush out (had to get to the polls before 8!) and leave the mess from dinner. We definitely owe a nights worth of dishes!

Glad to have you, Amanda, I bet we can find 3 or 4 extra plates. See you then!

Yes, I did find something on my bench. Was that you, Tristen and Teghan?? I guess I thought it was the Plant Fairy! Thank You very much. I'm sorry I missed you. Maybe I will see you tonight. I did have a busy day, went to Donna's and the grocery store, a little more shopping and then to Paul and Lori's for a delicious supper. I voted this morning about 9:30, was the only one there, and I was No. 20.

Cool today, I planted a few seeds this a.m. but am staying inside now. Fixing rhubarb with dumplings for dessert. New --to me-- recipe. Hope it will taste o.k. Found a couple Pampred Chef items, Amanda, I guess my needs aren't so great any more, had to look for somthing I didn't already have.

Grandma, the girls have been wondering if you found something on your bench Sunday? We stopped by twice, you were gone both times, you were popular!

Anyone in Lincoln voting today? Ryan & I need to go...

Grandma & Donna, want me to pick up a Pampered Chef order from you tonight? We'll be around there for dance!

Oh, and we planted something! We put 3 shrub roses there! It looks great. I'll take photos soon & send them in.

What. A. Dope. Bush dedicates a monument in Crescent City, Louisiana, where he planted a symbolic tree, and the stone monument contains two spelling errors -- one of them being the name of the city....

Just when you think this lame-duck moron has done just about every dumb thing that can be done, he does one more. But even though I am (like all of us) oh-so-tired of looking at his face, I am kinda looking forward to seeing this movie. :-)

Well, I think I am about to start a 3 day week-end. Tomorrow is St Pauls track and field day and I always do my best to not go. Looking like it could be cancelled because of rain, so we wait to find out. Hopefully I will get the day because Erika has special plans. After almost two years -- she gets her braces off!!! So she is taking a "personal day" tomorrow.

Yay, Erika! Have some peanut brittle and caramels! --Gary

A fountain is a nice idea. Ryan, I'm sure, would have no problem installing one there, but I have heard of solar fountains and that spot should be sunny enough to keep it running.

And, Teghan could use it to fill her teapots for any outdoor tea parties. :-) --Gary

Thanks for all the input everyone. We did walk through Campbell's but it was busy & an hour & half from closing time. We didn't get much help. One of the investigators at work managed an Earl May for years before going into the Patrol (20 years ago) and he is kind of the go-to guy at work for yard questions. He recommended the spirea because it can be cut back & not look chunky. However, he didn't love the idea, and it doesn't sound like you guys do either. So, scratch that. Boxwood sounds good. We saw these cute evergreen looking mini christmas tree shaped things, that actually were boxwood I think. They were really need. We could picture 3 of those in there. We saw those at Finke's. Marsha I like the idea of a pot, EXCEPT, we are so tired of living in rentals/base housing/or a house we know we will only own for 4 years where we never set down roots. We are ready for permanancy! The guy at work said a water feature too, and I'm liking that idea... And Donna, as we looked at trees, and their price tags, over the weekend we wished we had made it to the fair deal!

Bella had her first vet appt today. She's 2 pounds 9 ounces. Doing pretty well, except that he discovered a heart murmur. Nothing ot be overly alarmed about (though you know we are!), he just said he'd watch it. She's so tiny they couldn't give all her shots in one day, I have to take her back on Saturday.

Grandma, you might be getting a call from Ryan. Teghan has morning kindergarten tomorrow (Thursday) and will be done around noon. Ryan is playing "soccer dad" and taking Tristen and a few other kids to a different school at 2-3:30 for a band concert. Teghan doesn't want to hitch along & has requested to visit you!

    Marsha
    5/7/08
I agree with Mom on the boxwood for your spot Amanda. A spirea can become very overgrown (and you could put some little lights on a boxwood in the wintertime). Another pretty tree would be a dwarf type of lilac (I think Lori and Paul have one in their front yard). Take a nice walk through Campbell's Nursery and see what they have and recommend. You could also put a large pot there and create a new garden throughout the seasons (or a fountain) and that way you wouldn't have to worry about any tree roots cracking up your cement.
    Grandma
    5/7/08
Way to go John, sounds like some exciting news from your house! Makes me so happy! A nice warm and rainy day, it rained last night, so far none today. Good for pulling weeds and transplanting stuff. I believe Karen is on vacation, and only telling us she is working. What a fun week!! I had fun last Friday, went to Teghan's school to see how well they could read. They had several small plays and they couldn't have been cuter, Teghan was the cutest little sheep in the whole barnyard! And they served us cookies and punch. Amanda, I think Boxwood might be nice in that area, stays green all winter, and doesn't spread very fast. You will have to look for something that can take the sun. I planted a "salsa garden," very small, but it will be fun to see if it will grow. Tulips are nearly finished blooming, and I have NO Lilacs this year.
    John
    5/7/08
Thanks for all the congrats that you have sent my way. Very much appreciated. I am setting up all my new computer equipment today and writing this message on my new laptop. I am thrilled with this new opportunity and the fact that it came around at the same time that I feel physically able to make some kind of work commitment. Just a short time ago I feel it would have been more of a question mark. However, being able to work from home is certainly a contributing factor to my comfort level in taking this position. Thanks again for all your support.
    Donna
    5/7/08
Amanda, a spirea would get too big too fast for the spot you're thinking. That little tree Mom and I saw at the Spring thing at the fairgrounds a few weeks ago would have been perfect. But a small tree and some perennials like silver mound would be pretty there.
    Karen
    5/6/08
Amanda, I am not much of a gardener, but I do know a little about spirias. We have them on both sides of the house. They grow great for us. The ground isn't the best there, but they do well -- and they seem to grow fast. Another gorgeous day! Almost enjoy being out with the children. More treats for us today, and breakfast to come tomorrow morning. I thought the test was very easy -- (not to brag) I wondered why it was a banana test when it said coconut tree :)
    Amanda
    5/6/08
Grandma (Marsha, Donna, Karen & Brent) what do you know about spirea? Think it would grow in that little L-shaped spot between the driveway & front porch? Its about 3 feet long on the driveway side, 2 feet long on the sidewalk side & maybe 2 feet wide. We want a little height in whatever we plant there. But, we don't want something that will infringe upon the sidewalk or driveway... We're having a hard time finding something that fits that bill!
    Gary
    5/6/08
Sorry, Samantha, but I have to disagree with your review! :-)

Beautiful day today, got up to 80 and I even got a bit of a sunburn this afternoon. John -- congratulations on your new job! Teghan -- how was your Reading Celebration? I just got back from a delicious dinner. It is teacher appreciation week at St Pauls -- boy do they do great things for us. One of the parents owns a wonderful resturant and they had a dinner for us. Three appetizers, I had lasgana that actually melted in my mouth, then a choice of three deserts, and the wine was flowing. Tomorrow they are having someone to come to the school and give us massages, Wednesday we all get Starbucks coffee. Not sure what else, but I know that we will have something everyday. There are reasons why I love my job :)
    Gary

Oh, and CONGRATS John on the job! What a great opportunity for you, and to do something you truly beleive in is always rewarding! And Marsha & Grandma, thanks for the recipes!

Fairly horrible at driving AND listening. That is a problem... Cold Stone, I wish I could enjoy it, but thinking about it makes this lactose intolerant stomach roll! Anna & Sam though did turn me into a soy convert. I've always gotten Starbucks (whether it was my classic chai, or a latte of sorts, vanilla or honey are the best) regular and just dealt with possible stomach complaints... However, I tried it with soy & I'm loving it! Also, Anna, I tried soy chocolate milk, LOVE it! And I'm getting some calcium. Thanks for the suggestions girls, you oughta visit more often! (Bella misses you! All 2 pounds 5 ounces of her! Ryan took her to the vet to get weighed today. She was 1 pound 13 ounces 2 weeks ago today.)
