Glad to hear that everyone had a good Christmas I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the presents.
Sean, I loved the iTunes gift card, I've already used it all up.
Grandma, the S'more maker is so cool! I've been making tons of them for Emily & me.
Donna, the picture frame you gave me was perfect, & I have the perfect picture to put in it.
& Gary I absolutely love jelly beans!
Thanks again everyone!

Wow, that squirrel must not have gotten what he wanted from Santa!

The Tale of the Christmas Squirrel
(may not be suitable for younger readers)
It was a beautiful sunny Christmas morning in Minneapolis this year. We were merrily opening our gifts in the family room enjoying the lovely morning, the sky was clear blue and we had a great view of the snowy back yard and even beyond into the alley. Our alley is a home to raccoon, robins, owls, woodpeckers, alley cats, stray dogs and, of course, many squirrels. Our alley is also home to a transformer, it generously supplies power to us and all of our neighbors. As we were ripping into our bounty from Santa, a loud POP interupted our merriment and a flash of light so bright occured we thought fireworks were going off. Then we noticed that our Christmas tree lights were off, as were all the lights in the house. As we looked out to the transformer we saw a squirrel tail flapping in the breeze. "How can we cook dinner?" I wondered aloud. "Chinese food" replied Mark. Mark got out his magical marvelous phone and soon reported the demise of the squirrel and our neighborhood lack of power. Power to return by 4:30 was their promise. We resumed our gifting. A few minutes later, a big old power co. truck pulled into the alley. Power Co. Dude got out of the truck with a long, long pole. He extended the pole deftly and with much skill and finesse extracted the squirrel from the transformer with one mighty motion and sent its remains to the alley below. Moments later power had been resumed to us all. A merry Christmas followed (except for the squirrel.)
The end. (a true tale)

Gary, I'm sure you've seen this, but just in case you hadn't, or anyone else hadn't, have fun!

Ah, that felt good! :-) Thanks! --Gary

Emily, you're welcome. Glad you like it.

Thanks Karen, for the grill. I haven't used it yet, but it looks like fun. ;-)

Mom, I wanted to let you know that we used your gift card today. We all went out for a delicious lunch at Applebees, Thanks again. Started out nice this morning, but now it is windy, cold and a little bit of snow. Brent has the next two days off. We will do hors d'oeuvres tomorrow and also stocked up on some movies.

We had a good Christmas around here too.
Teghan (Amanda), thank you so much for the bag full of goodies! I love the bag and was thinking it would be a good dance bag for when I go back to school. And all of the bath things are so nice, thanks again! :)
Grandma, the candle chandelier is so pretty. I can't wait to put it up in my room when I go back to school.
Donna, the picture frame is so nice. I have been looking for a good picture to put in it.
And, Gary we love the jelly belly sampler! Erika and I have been having a lot of fun making the recipes. But be careful, the watermelon looks a lot like the japelano...
Thanks again everybody! :)

Thanks to Ryan and Amanda for the Christmas box that arrived today. We will enjoy the Beatles book, we dug into the popcorn right away (delicious!). The cookies are also fantastic... thank you for streching Christmas a little longer for us. But hey, that puppy must have escaped.

Ginormous collection of photos of Christmas in Minneapolis. Thanks, y'all! --Gary

Gee Gary, sorry to hear about your fall, but you are fortunate not to have broken any bones. My advice, buy salt. Thank you Mom for all the nice gifts for us and the kids. Gary, the jelly beans are tremendous and Donna the ornament is beautiful. Linz and Lori, Sam & Anna have already used the gift cards, thanks for them. Karen, the note pads are very nice, I will enjoy them, and Zach loved the gift card. I took down all the Christmas stuff yesterday. It is still cold here, lots of ice around so I am moving slow! Happy New Year to all.

Hey Teghan, thanks for the cool birthday party. For those who weren't able to make it, we had a nice lunch, then some pink birthday cupcakes, and then Teghan opened a big mound of excellent birthday presents. And then we got a demo of the Wii "Rock Band" that Santa brought to the Metcalf house this year. Nice, but Ryan's vocals on "Roxanne" are going to be in my head for a long time, I'm afraid....

Hey, new pictures up today, from four days ago when Tristen and Teghan spent the day on campus.

Gary, what a horrible time you had. Hope you are feeling better soon. We are losing lots of our snow today. I went out this afternoon and shoveled a little to clear the gutters and back door. I think we are in the 40's.... just one week ago today was about -10 and 10 inches of snow.

I'm pretty stiff and sore today, as some of you predicted. I just woke up from a long nap, which helped (and which is why these notes you sent in hours ago are only showing up now.)

For those who don't know what we're talking about, I slipped on the ice yesterday and hit the ground like a sack of wheat. I was just about to get in my car to head over to Grandma's for Christmas when I slipped, landing on my knees (which were not in good shape to begin with) then twisting over and crashing on my side. Fortunately I was right beside the car so I could pull myself up; my knees hurt so much I'm not sure I could have gotten up otherwise. But unfortunately my car keys flew out of my hand as I went down and they were now lost somewhere in the snow. After collecting myself a bit and brushing off the mud and snow, I hobbled off to look for a neighbor with a phone. (Yes, I need a cellphone -- I'm getting one next week, along with several sets of spare keys.) Knocked on several nearby doors with no answer, and then saw some people loading their car over on the next street. So I caught them and used their phone to call Donna. I figured I may not see my keys until the spring thaw, if then, so she could give me a lift to Mom's. She headed right over, so while I was waiting I shuffled around in the snow around my car hoping to turn up the keys, and luckily I found them just a few minutes before Donna arrived. So we both drove back to Mom's. I felt kind of ...weird the rest of the day, due I imagine to the burst of adrenaline still in my system; and today it's just stiffness and soreness with a little bruising on my legs. Also, my left little toe hurts -- I must have kicked the side of the car on the way down...? Bottom line: If any of you are considering falling down on the ice, my advice is: Don't! It messes you up!

I too want to thank everybody for the great Christmas. Sam, the glassful o' goodies is just one treat after another -- thanks so much! Nelsons, thanks for the bag with many of my favorite flavors inside (and also a black bag, which is now I guess my trademark ever since Zach gave me one for Christmas many years ago -- I've worn out that one and two others since!). Donna and Hatgidakis's, thanks for the cookware and spices and such -- I lump them together here as I will certainly be using them all together. :-) And thanks to Mom for the amazing old newspapers she had saved over the years -- Moon landing, D-Day, Japanese surrender, and death of FDR. Those will keep me occupied for a while! And thanks to the Metcalfs for the Christmas candle. As I was making my goodbyes last night, Teghan said, "Have fun with the candle!" I will! :-)

Gary, how's the body feeling today? Can you believe the weather? Wow. Almost everythings melted! We're doing our Christmas with my mom, Sean & Shelby this afternoon at our house. Our last Christmas, then Saturday we're doing a bday & party for Teghan, bowling, and then the previously mentioned party at our house... Phew. So much for 5 days off work!

Thanks everyone for the gifts! Tristen had to guard her Whitman's last night pretty tightly. And we heard "I love Chocolate" about 700 times! The purse is cute, though I felt so guilty opening it & enjoying it, knowing your box & gifts & baked goodies are sitting at a UPS. I can't tell you enough how bad I feel about the shipping mix up (really just me, typing in an E instead of an S).

12/26/08
OK, here's the Teghan birthday plan. Sunday the 28th, our house: noon. Grandma, I'll get the ham from you (today or tomorrow) & I'll pick up some buns for sandwiches. We'll have some chips or something & a cake. Pretty low key as we've all eaten plenty in the last few days. Sound good?

Happy Day After Christmas. Thanks to everyone for the great gifts.
Mom -- the gift card was perfect, and the candy is delicious. We will have fun with when we use the card.
Gary -- can't wait to try out the games, probably later today, the giant box of jelly belly was a big hit with the kids. They have already sampled many flavors.
Marsha -- I love the cup with yarn. I haven't knitted for a long time, so it will be fun to try it again, thanks also for the soap it smells great.
Olivia -- thanks for the N plate and cheese ball mix. I think I will make the cheese ball for our New Years Eve.
Donna -- I love the gorgeous christmas ornament. I put it on the mantel and will keep it out for awhile.
Teghan -- Brent LOVED the Star Trek Pezs -- he was very happy to get them!
We had a nice day yesterday, got up late and opened presents. Then we headed to Omaha about 1. The roads were good and no problems (well one). The weirdest thing happened on the way home. We were driving along, a car passed us, and as it did something flew off its roof and headed straight for us. Turns out it was a giant piece of ice, landed right in front of me on the windshield. We pulled over as soon as we could, thought sure we would need a new windshield, but couldn't find any damage. Just took the tree and a few decorations down. Now we have room to move again. Think we take it easy the rest of the day. Poor Brent had to go back to the office this morning.

Well, there's no reason the box shouldn't make it there, I just tracked it & at 5 pm today it landed in Eagan, MN. Phew... Well, I guess I'll say phew when you confirm that it's in your hands... :-)

Girls & I made homemade noodles tonight for chicken noodle soup tomorrow. Also made puppy chow & I made the cheese log everybody requests. I was feeling so good about my progress until I cleaned up my kitchen & put away soy sauce. And if you refer to the recipe, it doesn't take soy sauce. It takes the very similar looking worcestershire, which happen to sit next to one another on the shelf. ARGH! I'm not sure what's gonna happen there, but we'll see. They're similar, just saltier & not as smoky, which it's salty enough with the dried beef & accent, and the smoky flavor kinda adds to it. Argh...

Anyway, Merry Christmas Eve Eve!

Sounds like you have just invented the Chinese Cheese Log! --Gary

The last work day of 2008 (I'm now off til January 5) was excellent, thanks to Tristen and Teghan. The campus today was 99.9% empty, so we just sort of ran free. After computer games and paper crafts in my office, we prowled the building. We found an empty classroom where T&t played teacher/student, then we took my remote-controlled helicopter and flew it in "the oval," the building's entryway where the ceiling is maybe 40 feet high. Then we had an elegant lunch in our library (Lunchables were catered in). We returned to the library later in the day for chair races. We are in the process of re-furnishing the library and we have maybe a dozen chair samples on hand to evaluate; so the girls each picked one with wheels and raced them up and down the long side of the room. Big fun! I've got some good pictures of all of the above, but I hate to take down the beautiful Christmas photos before Christmas actually arrives, so I will post today's photos later -- maybe on Teghan's birthday! Anyway, thank you Tristen and Teghan -- let's do it again soon!

Snowed this morning, but it warmed up to 24!!! WOW, after this horrid cold spell, it sure felt good and it improved the roads so much. Karen, your delicious treats are long gone...we always love the spritz cookies. The cookie bake at Gma's looked really cool, what fun. I had a nice day at work, little office party and will be off for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I just picked up our spiral cut ham dinner from Kowalski's grocery and will roast a turkey as well. For Christmas eve, I'm making clam chowder. Gary, how come you are so lucky to have T and t with you at work all day? Ryan, how was the Christmas light drive? We will be looking for the box Amanda...can't wait to see the puppy!!!
Karen
12/23/08
It's much warmer here too -- up to 20 this morning. Yesterday I woke up to a temp of -17, didn't even want to know what the wind chill was. I've had enough of cold and snow to last a long time, looks like maybe one more cold, snowy day then some improvement. We've been enjoying our time off, mostly staying in where it's warmer. Our deer seems to have moved on, we saw a couple of spots in the backyard where he had spent the night. So does everyone have to work tomorrow? What are your plans for Christmas? Brent is working through the holidays. He is having an office party today -- catering in some lunch. He should get out a few hours early tomorrow. We are doing things a little different this year. Having our big dinner on Christmas eve, then off to Omaha for another big dinner with the Nelsons. Cooking baking day looked fun -- we have just about finished all of ours. Erika is about to make one more batch. Marsha -- thanks you so much for the goodies in the box. The fudge was gone way too fast. Brent LOVES the carmels (and that is something I don't make). I've been finding little wrappers all over the house. Gary, Tristen and Teghan have fun! What a great way to spend your day. Time for me to head out for an oil change -- oh what fun!
Tristen
12/23/08
Yeah, we love our work too. ;-)
Amanda
12/23/08
Sheesh, I wish I had 6 lunchables & goldfish & helicopters at work! That's what I call a good Christmas Eve Eve day at work!

It's actually kind of warm out, 23 degrees, heat wave!

John & Marsha, we UPS'd your package yesterday, should be there by the end of the day tomorrow. Crossing my fingers it gets there OK, but they said they had had no delays this month due to weather or anything. So, as long as you're home, or they can drop it off you should be good!

Amanda
12/23/08
So, Tristen & Teghan, are you at the office this morning? Did you have milk for breakfast? :-)

Yes, we're at the office, having lots of fun. We're about to take a walk (inside the building). Gary's helicopter is fixed, so we can play with it. Yes, we had milk and it was very good. Gary brought like a lot of lunchables -- like, six. We've eaten a lot of Goldfish, and are about to play with the helicopter. Have a good work time, and stay warm! :-) --Tristen and Teghan

Gary
12/22/08
Hey, in case you hadn't heard yet, it's cold out there! I noticed a couple of interesting things this morning: One, when I got in my car I couldn't figure out why my head was practically touching the ceiling. I soon realized that the seat was so cold it had no "give" to it -- it was like sitting on a bench. That was strange. And two, as I was sitting there waiting for the car to warm up a bit, I noticed my dashboard was all dusty. Okay, maybe I don't have the cleanest car in the world, but I didn't remember that much dust. So I ran my finger through it and discovered it was not dust but tiny little ice pellets. My breath was actually freezing and turning into snow. That was a first for me....

Hopefully it will be a bit warmer tomorrow, when I bring Tristen and Teghan to work with me. The campus is practically empty so we should have the run of the place.

Ryan
12/21/08
Well we are braving the weather 1 degree to drive around and look at xmas lights. We are bringing Gma with. Hope everyone stays warm.
Gary
12/21/08
And minutes later, some Christmas-y shots from Sioux City. Thanks, Karen!
Gary
12/21/08
The cookie baking day at Grandma's yesterday was lots of fun (in spite of the freezings temps outside). All day there was a nice fire in the fireplace downstairs (thanks, Ryan!), and with all the baking the house smelled like the North Pole branch of Mrs. Fields. I intended to take some pictures, but even though I had my camera along -- fully charged and ready to go -- I completely forgot. Luckily Ryan took some photos, and here they are!
Karen
12/20/08
Marsha, your box just arrived, Thanks!! Already enjoying the fudge :)
Amanda
12/19/08
I think 1 pm is a bit late. I think more like 11 or 12. I think we'll eat lunch & head over when we're done, around that time... Olivia if you're reading this, do you want us to pick you up?
Gary
12/19/08
Hey, let me reiterate Amanda's question about the start-time on Saturday. Any ideas on that? I imagine, say, 1 pm... Can anyone prove me wrong?
Karen
12/19/08

Erika and I are getting an extra day of vacation. School is cancelled!! We must have at least 8 inches of new snow (on top of of 6 inches from Tuesday). Brent is out with the snow blower trying to find the driveway. Today was already an early out for both Erika and I, and we were to have our Christmas party. So I guess will be having that when we go back in two weeks. Just saw that Emily is also off for the day. She is still at the dorm -- I imagine that Brent will have to pick her up. It is on top of a very steep hill and I don't think her car will handle all the snow too well. So how hard did Lincoln and Minneapolis get hit? Glad that the boxes got to everyone OK.

I'm watching the school closings now: Lincoln Public and Omaha Public schools are closed, along with every other little school district in the area. But the University? No. Sheesh. So once again, I have to take responsibility and declare a snow day myself. Not only is my car encased in ice like an M&M in its candy shell, but I don't want to get anywhere near the streets based on the street crew's performance a few days ago. Enjoy your snow day, everybody! :-) --Gary

Marsha
12/18/08
Thanks to Karen and Brent and to Paul and Lori for sending boxes, they arrived this afternoon in fine shape. We are getting ready for the storm too... wish it would head far north!
Gary
12/18/08
Wow, interesting weather right now (6:45 pm): rain/sleet/snow with lightning and thunder. Weird!
Gary
12/18/08
The forecast was updated to say the storm which was expected to hit around 5 will instead start in around 7. Even so, everybody in my office decided to leave around 4. I ran some errands, and little ice pellets started coming down around 4:30. Streets were okay, but sidewalks were getting slick. Home around 5, and I've got a feeling I'll be staying home tomorrow....
Grandma
12/18/08
Karen, your box just came about 20 minutes ago, haven't unpacked it yet. Was in the basement when I heard the postman knocking and when I got there he was writing a note, said I just saved myself a trip to the post office, so I was happy I got up in time. Sure is dropping in temp., feels like anyway, but no moisture that I can see.
Karen
12/18/08
We got two boxes from Lincoln today!! Thanks -- did our boxes arrive yet??
Grandma
12/18/08
Well, I surely hope everyone is feeling better today. I see there are a lot of early closings, mostly bus routes and Iowa schools. Maybe we will dodge the bullet, however one school to close was Waverly. My pantry isn't well stocked as yet, I have 10 pounds of flour and 5 of sugar, some margarine but only 1 lb. butter. I have enuf for one batch of choc. marshmallow cookies and 1 batch of Spritz, maybe I will mix them up today, am thinking I had trouble with my cooky press last year. I did make caramels this morning, unwrapped as yet have to check waxed paper supply. Maybe you could bring a cookie sheet, I have a lot, but the shiny ones bake better in my opinion. GO COOKIE BAKERS!!
Lindsey
12/18/08
Those all sound good to me. Look over the recipes and whatever you don't have, me and Matt can pick it up on our way there or something. And I put in a double vote for caramels ;-)

My mom made a really good poppyseed bread too that I wouldn't mind making more of. But, I can always do that at home too.

Amanda
12/18/08
I'm home with Tristen today. She's feeling better, but still very tired and very achy. But she's not sitting it the bathroom all day like she did yesterday. I went & rented her 3 movies from Redbox ($3 all together, yes!) & just made her chicken noodle soup in bed, so she's set. If we get the ice storm tonight we'll be bunkered down too....

So, as long as she's feeling better by Saturday (which I'm sure she will be) and as long as Ryan or I don't get this bug are we still on for baking day at Grandmas? I have a few things on hand that I'll bring over & can of course get more things.

I have:
*2 packages of shortening sticks
*Probably almost 2 packages of margarine
*1 pound of butter
*2 cocoa containers
*1 1/2 packages of green tree & red star marshmallows
*2 bags of semi sweet choc. chips
*1/2 bag of mini kisses (for peanut butter cookies)
*2 cans of evaporated milk

I'm sure I have other stuff (flour, sugar, brown sugar, eggs, peanut butter) that I can bring too and I might just bring it to cover bases. What are we wanting to make?

*Spritz (both Ryan & Tristen requested these...)
*Caramels (Grandma, are you going to make them ahead of time & me & Linz will wrap them Saturday? If so, can I bring the stuff & you help me make my own batch & I'll bring them home & wrap them the next day?)
*Peanut Butter cookies w/ kiss (we've already done a batch of those & they're gone!)
*Chocolate Marshmallow cookies (we did a double batch of those & Teghan took a dozen to Girl Scouts & I took some to work so they're almost gone too!)
*Fudge (I have all the stuff to make it, just never did so I'll bring it-but it's enough for just one batch & I don't do nuts!) *No Bake Cookies (I have all the stuff to make these too, I'll bring it all)
*Pretzels-Donna?

There's always these too, but I don't know what everyone's thinking:
*Peanut Brittle (Linz did you ask about this?)
*Puppy Chow (girls love it, but I can easily make it at home)
*Pineapple Pecan cookies
*Easy & Wonderful Cream Cheese Mints :)

Anyway, just some ideas & I wanted to throw out the items I have... You don't even want to see the Excel Spreadsheet me & my mom made last year when we had a baking day. We were organized! It all went smoothly too except for the dang mints!

Oh, and what time Saturday? I assume we'll pick up Olivia & Lindsey & Matt will come over later. I'm sure Ryan will park it next to the fire & come up randomly to cool off....

Amanda
12/17/08
Wow! That was fast, Ryan just took that to the post office yesterday. Glad it got there. Marsha, yours we are waiting to mail til Monday but the UPS site says it will be there by the end of the day Christmas Eve. I am SO crossing my fingers it will go as planned, but I'm sure it will. I don't want to mail it to early though, the little puppy we are sending you will be thirsty. ;-)

Tristen is still pretty rough tonight. And OMG I am just hoping with all hope I don't get it. It's ROUGH. Today was locker cleaning out day too before Christmas break, so she was bummed to miss that...

Marsha
12/17/08
Well, we can brag about the great snow removal in Mpls., trucks out in force to deal with the snow, But, they are having a hard time keeping up with the black ice that forms from car exhaust. People at work were complaining about 15 min. rides taking 1 to 2 hours. I made it around ok but I just go the city streets. 15 inches of snow for Dec. and it is really cold. I sent out boxes to Lincoln and SC today, used ginormous amounts of packing tape so take care with the chain saw as you try to open them. Party was last Thurs. and it went well, the bean dish was soo good. Anna and I went to the Swedish Museum with our friends Jane and Courtney on Sunday. Wow, huge castle type home decorated with traditional Scandinavian Christmas decorations. Been listening to lots of Christmas music...the first batch of fudge and caramels are gone, need to get to the kitchen. Hope everyone starts feeling better soon! The pictures have been lots of fun too.

Gary, the Christmas card is another winner. Framing is in order.

I thank you. --Gary

Karen
12/17/08
Amanda and Lori (Livy) we got your boxes today -- thanks! Gary -- I also got an email from Fed-ex with a tracking for the box(es) from Lincoln, so hopefully it will come straight to the house this year.

Another crazy day at school, the kids are getting way too excited about christmas. Tomorrow night is the big Christmas program, although a major snowstorm is predicted, the Mary was looking pretty sick this afternoon and several other kids were out sick -- oh what fun... Brent is home sick today too. Erika has been dragging, just trying to get through the week. She also has a debate tournament tomorrow. Our streets in SC are lousy too. Snowpacked and icy. Everyone is driving about 10 mph. Marsha -- is tonight your party? You'll have to report back tomorrow -- sure it will be fun.

Gary
12/17/08
I would like to take a moment to say a word of appreciation to the Lincoln snow-removal crews. I would like to, but I can't, as they have done nothing! In two days of driving around, I haven't yet seen one truck, one snowplow, or one cleared street. Even the main streets are still covered with packed-down snow and slick as ice. Has anyone in Lincoln seen a plow? Any gravel or sand or chemicals on the streets? I'm really looking forward to see how they handle tomorrow's predicted "wintry mix"...

One more thing: By now you've all seen the news clip of Bush and the shoe-throwing incident. You may not have seen the full-length version, however. Turns out there was much more to it than was reported:

Gary
12/17/08
More Christmas odds and ends: I have added two more cams to the Christmas webcams page, up at the top: Santa's house and Santa's office. I imagine both cams could be pretty active this next week.

Also, here's a nice online Christmas card that Donna posted to the newsletter two years ago. It's still live, and still cool.

Gary
12/17/08
A P.S. to my last note, directed to the Nelsons: I was just now reading over last year's December newsletter and was reminded that you guys had an unpleasant time getting your deliveries from us via FedEx. And I promised that this year we would use UPS. Well.... I had forgotten all this and we went with FedEx again. I hope there are no problems this year. As soon as FedEx gets our tracking numbers into the system, I will be able to let you know exactly when you can expect it. If that helps. Sorry about that!
Gary
12/17/08
If you haven't checked your calendar lately, you may not be aware that one week from tonight is Christmas Eve! Woo-hoo!

Residents of Sioux City and Minneapolis should be on the look-out for Christmas boxes, shipped (with Sean's able assistance) from Orchard Street last night.

And if you're bored at the moment, why not go to one of our cool sites from last year around this time and design a Christmas sweater?

Amanda
12/17/08
And now Tristen's sick.... Same stuff...

Dang! Hope you feel better soon, Tristen. --Gary

12/16/08

Yes, we are having snow here too. Must have at least 6 inches. Started just as I was taking Erika to school this morning. Really thought we would get an early out, but no such luck. The roads were tricky this afternoon. The snow plow had come by our street and I couldn't even get in the driveway. Brent came home a little early and is out now with the snow blower. Erika was supposed to go to a debate tournament tonight, but that is postponed until Thursday, and I am glad! I am so glad I got the boxes sent off yesterday. Always a big relief. School is crazy. Kids are hyper, singing Christmas songs all day long. Rehearsal for the christmas program for 1 1/2 hours every morning, snow and a party coming on Friday. I have lost all control!! I am really looking forward to having two weeks off to unwind. That was a good picture today (actually I've enjoyed them all) -- took me a minute to figure out where it was though.
Donna
12/16/08

I decided to work from home today and am glad I did. From the sound of it, the streets are pretty bad in Omaha. And we're supposed to have freezing rain and snow on Thursday. Nice picture on the advent calendar today. I don't remember seeing it before.

Great pictures of T&t.

Gary, I liked your Christmas card this year and was thinking next year you should do one of the nativity--you as Mary, Joseph and Jesus. ;-)

Yow! That's a whole lotta sacrilege for one little card... We'll see. :-) Today's advent picture was Christmas Eve at your house (as you know), but I can't remember the year. Some time ago, though, as I took that with an older (and crummier) camera. --Gary

Hey, speaking of webcams, you can check on the condition of Lincoln streets by going here and clicking on whichever traffic cam you want. There's like forty of 'em!

Snow snow snow, but sadly not a snow day here in Lincoln. It's the nice dry powdery kind, so driving isn't a bad problem. Though it still seems to take twice as long to get anywhere. The campus is totally quiet this morning: No classes, just some finals here and there, so you see almost no one on the sidewalks or in the hallways. I'd be enjoying this snow a lot more if I had the Christmas boxes packed and shipped, but that's still ahead -- probably tonight. (Good planning on your part, Karen, to get them out yesterday! The weather maps (and the webcam) show you getting snowed on too....)

OK -- I just braved the cold temperatures and took advantage of my late start. Boxes are on the way to Lincoln and Minneapolis. Should be there Wed or Thurs -- let me know when they arrive.

Erika and I get another 2 hour late start. Nasty cold -- may get up to 0! We also got about 2 inches of snow yesterday -- but hard to tell because of the strong winds. Erika is taking the whole day off -- Mondays she always has an early dismissal -- so not really worth going in for just 4 hours. Amanda -- nice pictures -- I keep meaning to get mine sent in, but haven't yet. Did lots of baking this weekend. Also have the boxes all wrapped and ready to mail -- hope to get to the post office this afternoon -- we'll see....

Since it was my idea to send in photos from our homes,
let me be the first. We made it to the Nutcracker tonight, Teghan got better just in time. Ryan stayed home to study (and he wouldn’t have gone anyway I don’t think…) and when we came home the fire was going & we all looked decent so we snapped some shots in front of the fireplace & tree.

Teghan, I hope you are feeling better.

What a crazy day -- so glad it's Friday! At least is was nicer today, melted a lot of our snow, and made the roads much improved. I guess I'd better enjoy it -- I heard today the high on Monday is to be 5! Hoping to do some more baking this week-end (somehow most of the cookies I made last week are gone), Emily is coming over and wants to go shopping. Trying to get boxes in the mail by Monday.

Poor Teghan's home sick today. It's her first missed day of 1st grade. She's got some stomach stuff going on & can't seem to stay out of the bathroom. I am taking her to the dr. at 2:30, not because of what seems like the flu, but she's complained of an earache all week, just not bad enough to warrant dr.'s care. But now with this on top I just want to rule out an ear infection. She gets them so often... And we have dinner plans & her first Nutcracker performance to watch tomorrow night with me, T & Teghan's friend Alaina & her mom. I hope with all hope she's better by then....

Feel better soon, Teghan! --Gary

Erika and I get a two hour late start this morning. It started to rain about noon yesterday, it turned to sleet and ice by 5. We must have about 6 inches of snow on top of that. Started to cancel lots of thing last night and the principal just called me at 6 to say it was a late start. Brent is out with the snow blower. Gary I got your email about the contact page -- but our phone number is wrong -- did you get an email from me a few days ago with the new ones? If not I'll send them again.

My fault. I changed your email but forgot to do your new phone numbers. Now fixed! --Gary

Amanda, no e-mails from you -- been wondering if it was working. Haven't received any for a few days -- please try again. I have been baking cookies today -- but think I'll stop for now. Erika put our tree up this afternoon -- I'll decorate it tomorrow. I like the idea of sending in pictures -- I'll try to get one this week-end. Emily said she would send in one of her dorm room too. Had our St Pauls christmas party last night -- nice night. Did some singing -- but left as the Bingo game was getting started (Lutherans do know how to party). Marsha -- tried to call you (did talk to Paul -er I mean John) -- sorry to hear about 42nd Street. What a great store -- I know she tried a long time to keep it going. I'll miss all the treats you got me there. Sam how is the new puppy? We need pictures! No new details on the kids at school, haven't returned yet -- doubt that they will for a few days. Just lots of news reports on TV -- so I hope they aren't watching them. I do know that once they return to school, everyone will keep an eye on them and help them through it.

This picture is closer to Donna's car. Almost the same color, and 2 door not 4.

Thanks! I didn't realize until much later that the picture I found was a 4-door, but hadn't yet gotten around to changing it. --Gary

I just texted Olivia & asked her to get the recipe & type it up on the recipe page tomorrow. She said she will do it.

Tonight we did our decorations, but not the tree. But getting the house decorated was a start. Our neighbors have all had lights up since BEFORE Thanksgiving & we were a little put off by that. But, the inside is done & the spot is waiting for the tree. We will go pick one out Sunday & do it then. We did put the artificial tree upstairs for the girls to decorate.

Donna's new car is very nice! If I could still drive a car-kidwise-(& a two door no less) I would totally drive it. Love it!

We've had our fireplace going for a month now I bet. Ryan's gone through a lot of wood & has been keeping grandma stocked. He's going to spend the whole day tomorrow cutting wood & all that jazz. He's excited. He said he doesn't hunt or fish or anything, to him cutting wood & the whole deal is like his favorite pasttime. Whatever. My favorite pasttime is sitting in front of it when it's blazing!

Karen, what a sad deal. Tristen had a boy in her class last year whose father shot his mother a year or two prior & she died & the dad is now in prison. SO sad. He had to go to court & it was out of state & it was a very hard time for him. I remember she said she was extra nice to him at that time. Oh, and Karen-- have you gotten any emails from me? I sent one last Friday night & then again yesterday? If they're not coming through let me know. I need you to read it....

Sam, can't wait to see pix of the puppy! Bella's turning into a pretty good dog, except we think she's a little OCD. She will not leave her lamb alone. She's freakish about it. Carries it with her everywhere.

I'd love everyone to send in a picture of their house for Christmas. That could be nice. Inside, outside, the tree, or just a table, whatever. :) Maybe help the spirit too! We are going to bake a small batch of cookies next Sunday for Teghan to take to Girl Scouts for a Christmas party & cookie exchange. Then I think?? we might get together and do some more baking with Donna, gma, Linz, Liv? Not sure if any plans have been talked about seriously, but it might be in the works.

And how sad about 42nd Street. Just tonight I thought about that place. Years ago you gave me these 2 snowmen & I still wrap them in the box from there which has the sticker. I love those snowmen. Still one of my favorite decorations... So many places are closing. So many people are losing jobs or having hours cut, and pay cut. Makes me very glad I work for the state. I have low pay, but I know I have a job. As a matter of fact I have 150 hours overtime coming to me. And Ryan, as much as he complains about his job, he's pretty darn secure. The railroad isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Tristen has dance all day Saturday, tomorrow. The choreographers are coming back in from LA to teach them the rest of their competition pieces. Tristen will be at dance nearly 6 hours on Saturday & there's no where else she'd rather be. She wanted to share the site for the choreographers: http://www.musedanceco.com/ Also, she wrote 2 little papers/stories about her pets, one about Sasha & one about Zoe & entered pictures into a "pet show" at her school. They hang the pictures & stories up in the library & will put the pictures up on the website sometime.

And not much else to report on Teghan, other than the Girl Scout party. Oh, and we're going to the Nutcracker at the Lied next weekend. A friend of Teghan's, Alaina & her mom asked us if we wanted to go. So, me, T & t will go with her & her mom. We'll eat dinner first & then go to the show. The girls got fancy dresses & they're very excited. So am I!

That's it for now! I haven't been on in forever & mostly just wanted to comment on the recipe, but couldn't stop there!

Congrats on the new car Donna! Karen, you will have to give us a follow up on that very sad story. I am hosting our Treasury dept. Christmas party on Thurs, it's only our small dept. of 5 or 6 people and everyone is bringing a dish, I'm doing pulled pork sandwiches and would like to also serve some baked beans like the ones Lori makes with the ground beef and bacon, they are really delicious. Can anyone share that recipe?? (soon too:) ) thanks. We put up our tree last night when Anna was over THANK YOU ANNA! I am doing ok on Christmas shopping, pretty much simplified everyone's gift this year so I have more time to decorate and (hopefully) cook. Found a good new cookie recipe and I think I will make only 1 type this year. On a sad note, my beloved 42nd Street Gifts is closing. I worked there over 12 years and it is so tough to see it go, but many much larger stores are going under too. This economy stinks!! It is cold, like January already. Snow tonight, it really will be a white Christmas and that helps Santa's reindeer. I am putting out some reindeer food and reindeer magic to help them.

Too bad about 42nd Street! I blame George Bush. As to the beans, I have tried to duplicate them a few times and gotten close but not perfect. I do know the dish is usually called "Cowboy Beans," so if Lori doesn't read this in time you could Google that -- but there are many variations. What makes them so interesting is their sweetness, so look for a recipe that has sugar or some other sweetener. Here's one I just now found that sounds promising. Good luck! --Gary

Today did go a bit better. The mother is expected to make a full recovery. Brent seems to be feeling better, must have been a 24 hour bug. Erika and I got flu shots -- Emily refused to get one, Brent intended to, but just never got to it. Cold here today too, high of 30! Will need to get the fireplace going this week-end. Tonight we have a Christmas party for St Pauls -- it's at one of the teachers house -- should be a fun night. Hoping to do some baking tomorrow. My shopping is done and just about everything is wrapped. Gary, I know I've already said this -- but I will repeat it -- I am really enjoying the advent calender this year -- great idea!

Thanks again! Glad you all like it. --Gary

Karen, you really had a bad day, what a terrible thing to happen. Poor little kids, I really hope their Mother survives. Hope the flu doesn't get Brent down. I thought you guys had got the shots, didn't Erika get one? Stayed mighty cold all day, even tho most of the day was sunny. I am enjoying the Advent calendar also, I remember Livy loving that snow, betcha she wouldn't make a snow tunnel now a days!!

I had a very tough day at school today. Got up this morning, read the paper and saw where there had been a car chase and a shooting and possible suicide. No names were mentioned and I didn't think much about it. About an hour later I saw a quick news report with the names -- it was two parents of St Pauls kids. I was shocked! I know that they were going through a nasty divorce and the kids had moved in with grandparents. So now their mother is shot and in the hospital and their father was the cause of it and dead. The teachers all had a big meeting first thing this morning to see how to talk to the kids about it, also had the pastors come into the classrooms. Obviously the kids didn't come to school today, but it will be hard when they do......

Donna -- your car sounds so nice -- is it brand new? Should be fun to drive again.

Oh, get ready -- flu bug has started. Brent was dragging all day yesterday -- and it hit him this morning. (He shouldn't have put off getting his flu shot).

It's a Honda Accord Coupe, graphite black, black interior, 34 MPG highway, CD player, keyless entry, two year bumper to bumper warranty, roadside assistance for two years, a clock that works ;-), the Grand Am clock stopped working a long time ago and I really missed that. It drives really nice, very little road noise. My Grand Am was towed to the mechanic for the second time in less than two weeks. I had a leak in the water pump this time and he put a stop leak on it that would only last for days, which meant I had to get a new car fast. I knew I wanted either a Toyota or a Honda, found one (and only one) in my price range at Williamson Honda. Fortunately I really liked it. So in a matter of an hour or so, I left my beloved Grand Am and drove off in the Honda.

I'm going to get rid of the ybenorml vanity plate and had thought to go generic, but now am thinking of getting a new vanity plate. Any suggestions? Gary, isn't there a website that lists vanity plates you can get ideas from?

Here's one and here's another (with pictures!). Also, here's the Nebraska DMV Plate Preview page, where you can try out personalized plates and also see if your choice of message is available. --Gary

Donna, you got a new car? How about some details.......
We had snow overnight last night too. About 1/2 an inch, roads were a little slick, but not too bad. Now it is just cold!

I got on the road at 6:15, not too concerned about the weather, passed by several bad accidents--almost got rear ended--and took the Ashland exit and headed back home. It took 1.5 hours. But my new car (Honda Accord) never once had trouble on the icy roads. My poor old Grand Am just could not take any more, so I had no choice but to get rid of it. I will miss that car, but this one is awfully nice.
Gary

Yeeg, what a surprise to step outside this morning into half an inch of snow. Guess I should look out the windows first... My five-minute commute took me twenty this morning. Oddly, the side streets were fine, but the main streets were awful. 17th Street was a sheet of ice, so I carefully merged into this slow-moving mass of cars moving at about 10 mph. And then when I got to the office (late), I'm still the only one here. Lots of people are taking it slow this morning.

How was your drive, Donna? Hope it was uneventful. (In your new car!)
